Mitch McGovern could be available to bolster our backline stocks. Not the worst but probably not the right fit either.

Sorry but Mitch McGovern would be a close second to that fraud Brayden Preuss who coasted along with a career of being carried around. McGovern had that lightning strike type 5 goal game against Carlton playing for Crows which seduced them into the first contract and he's pretty much average across first 4 years. 2023 - his best season got him 10th in best and fairest.

I'd rather we go and get say Buku Khamis or Harry Arnold even to play that role. Mitch McGovern would be such a bad downgrade in all our other club trade selections over all these years. We usually go for elite at some point, injured now, can come for a bargain etc. He doesn't fit any of that profile.
I'd love Khamis or Arnold too. However, it's unlikely we have the picks to get either done. If we lose Starcevich, and manage to get something back, I'd be going after them no doubt.

McGovern is comfortably better than the others I mentioned before and would have undoubtedly played a fair chunk of games for us this year. He's good insurance, as Frost would be. There's always a couple of role players, and he's shown he's at the level to be able to do that.

Carlton paid McGovern way overs, but he'd be getting half that with us (likely), which is an important distinction.

Harrison Arnold has played 9 games for our VFL side this season so don't think he would be overly difficult to get on our list if we wanted him, not sure if there is a mechanism to get him on our list without using draft picks, eg delisted free agent, Cat B?

Apologies, I was thinking of Aleer (way off!).

Hear me out…

McGovern would be a better option than Doedee, Brain or Joyce. Payne gone for a fair chunk of next year, and Starc a potential out.

If the dollars weren’t ridiculous I’d be happy enough with him as coverage. Can take a good intercept mark, and is relatively reliable by foot. Has also played a fair chunk of games the last few years.

The other one I’d look at is Frost from the Hawks. I’d be very surprised if he’s not on another list next year, and I’d also be surprised if we aren’t into these types of players given our injuries and potential departures.
I believe Doedee will be better next year. With Paynes injury the club would likely offer Dizzy and Lester another 1 year contract. I am not too sure Payne will be out for a 'fair chunk of games' next year. Provided he is not rushed, and or does not have too many serious setbacks with rehab, could possibly see him around mid to late April, which is about 10 months from the GWS game.

I would much rather Frost than McGovern

Promising to know re Payne. I thought it was around the same rehab time as an ACL, but end of April would be nice.

Not so sure on Doedee. The mechanics of his running look to be impacted by the injuries he has had. Also, he’s had a few ‘outs’ due to not being able to pull up from games. History would suggest it’s going to be an extremely uphill battle to be able to contribute at AFL level after that many ACLs, especially the way he plays which is reliant on his ability to launch at the ball as opposed to say an inside mid. Agree we should definitely be giving Lester and Gardiner contracts.

I hope I’m proven very wrong (which often does happen) but I’m also all for getting depth in the event we need coverage.

He'll be a DFA because of his time on the Swans' list.

That's not too bad when you are supposedly paying a premium to extract a player from another club and backing yourself to turn him into a better/more consistent player.

I googled the average player salary - $519,000.

Thing is though he's not very good.

McGovern is a fringe player who was likely paid ~top 12 player money at Carlton. He'd come cheaper now, but not cheap enough. He's basically a Joyce type footballer, a little better, but we've probably have to pay him double or more what we are paying Joyce.

Someone like Norf, Essendon or St Kilda will take him.

DANIEL ANNABLE

This guy just keeps on impressing at every level he plays. Whether it be plying his trade for the Brisbane Lions Academy, the Allies, the AFL Academy or the Lions’ VFL side, Annable just keeps on gaining fans.

Jaspa Fletcher still doesn’t get any recognition.

Do you see Jaspa’s future as a mid? I think he’d kill it in there but for team balance I don’t know if he’ll end up in there. Far more suited to playing outside than our other young mids

I see him as a future captain in the Tom Harley mode, underrated everywhere but in club land.

Maybe he might like a premiership medal? ;)
