Caroline Wilson again said on Agenda Setters that she expects all Father / Sons and Academy players will be ineligible to be drafted by clubs in the first round of the draft.

She gave the example that Jarrod Roughead (who is at St Kilda) at some function today had a sook that its wrong that Cooper Hodge can be taken by Brisbane b/c of the Academy in front of Hawks. Luke Hodge was on the panel and laughed.

Pretty pathetic by Swann and Tom Harley that they have conceded so quickly on this issue given where they've come from.
Surely it can't be coming in this year draft, would be an horrendously unfair decision, clubs plan for matching bids a couple of years out.

FWIW we have 2 potential 1st round selections in our academy in the 2026 draft.

They haven’t even given this years changes a go and are already changing it again - the AFL is a putrid organisation
It hasn’t happened yet.

Yep zero respect for Swann now; what a piece of work he is; Judas like

I always knew Swann coming in and playing a huge role in saving the club from being cellar dwellers was suspicious. Him helping us win a premiership and become financially sustainable was just a long con for him to snag a job at AFL house and take away our academies.

I shouldn't have paid him those 30 pieces of silver. This is on me.

This scandal will consign Watergate to the humdrum annals of history, Swann has Deep Throat covered.

Tbh, i think if the AFL goes through this route, Brisbane should opt out of the draft, and have free access to the northern academies. If given the choice of having the best Victorian talents at the club, or the best QLD talents, I would always pick the best QLD talent. Likewise, Brisbane is a QLD club and our team should be full of northerners. And we can draft elsewhere to fill up the space. Expand the AFL academy zones for the lions, and let us just draft everyone from that zone. And we can even use our financial pull to lure people from other states to join it as well. Much better than a draft.

There's meant to be some sort of level ground here; i.e., no discounts at all on the first selection. This proposal (if it goes through) is too extreme and it will hurt a lot of clubs and it will basically devalue the northern academies. He should be pushing for something that satisfies all parties. This proposal will not do that, in fact, it will fracture almost half the league.
I think one failing here is part of the excitement and talk generated amongst football supporters at the potential for a son-of-a-gun coming to their club, or in the case of academies, a quality academy prospect. I generally couldn't care less for following the draft, other than knowing about players we're going to get (and accumulating points for them). Certainly, trading for picks will diminish and with less trades, and even less interest.
I could probably agree to do away with academy priority selections. They've served their purpose for now - only time will tell if there is an impact in terms of player retention (assuming they are taken away), and elite athletes coming to AFL or going to rugby. The AFL would need to take over funding the academies.

I would be in favour of paying a premium to get priority access to a player, or even something like paying full price for the player, with a 10% points transfer to the club that nominates the F/S or academy selection (almost like buying the rights to the player). This would encourage clubs to nominate a player, and really make clubs consider the worth of their selection.

Oscar Allen and Sam Draper in for Brandon Starcevich and Callum Ah Chee is while sad is better for our overall list balance, we need key position players and can probably cover Callum and Brandon to a relatively adequate degree with players currently on our list.

People expecting Swann to act unprofessionally in his new role is laughable. When he came to us, should he have been acting in extension of his previous role at Carlton?

Agree, but Starce is probably the bigger loss emotionally because he came in via the 2017 draft together with Cam, Zac & Jack, and formed part of our build from the bottom... plus he has been a gun for us and is really coming back into form after his concussion issues.
Cal was a great trade in from GC end of 2019 and took some time to cement his place. Interesting that it is generally thought that he's dropped off this year, but we're likely judging him on his finals form rather than his season last year. He kicked 17 goals in the H&A season last year - plus 10 in the finals. He's kicked 23 goals in the H&A this year - though his accuracy is way down. 27.14 last year, 23.25 this year.

Wouldn't be wasting any emotional energy on Caroline Wilson's opinions.
Like most journos she's kicking around 10% and has decided this will be her hill to die on.

irel Kallan Dawson has just been delisted. Do you think the Lions are still keen on him?
I am aware we rated him and were keen last time Kallan Dawson was out of contract at North and failed to convince him to come to QLD.
Now we have Zakostelsky and Lloyd developing and Joyce in that mature fringe bracket so not sure there's a place for him.
However he will come at base rate.

Told you all that Swann was a traitor. Hope the club tells the AFL that they will close the academy and that they can go and **** themselves. No point in developing players only to be drafted to vic clubs.
I suppose things change when you have eighteen clubs to look after rather than just one, I for one will be forever grateful for what Greg Swann has done for this football club.

What we need is some big Melbourne clubs to have top 10 rated player's coming through as Father/Sons and/or their NGAs over the next couple of years and they might have a 2nd think about it. Lets face it the AFL are renowned for their ability to sway with the prevailing narrative and backflip.

Cody Walker a Carlton father/son coming through next years draft is apparently right in line to be a top 3-5 pick, need 1 or 2 more to come through. I'm sure Cody will enjoy playing for the Kangaroos or Eagles.

Twomey reporting on footy classified that the Eagles are going to ask in their priority pick submission for the ability to bring in a free agent without it diluting compensation.

So essentially they want the ability to get pick 2 for Oscar Allen AND pick up Starce as a FA with no dilution of their compo pick.

Would be shit for us as we wouldn't get a compo pick for Starce so would lose him for nothing - I would suggest in that event that we'd seriously consider matching the contract to prevent that happening.

In any event Starce narrowed down to staying with us or the Eagles.

Wouldn't the club want to do that anyway because we'll have one FA in Allen, maybe two in Draper, coming in?

The AFL seem to want to even the playing field in the draft, but will continue to ignore their "fixture" issues, GF contract at MCG, too many Melbourne teams and dodgy 3rd party payments.

I wonder if we just make a similar priority pick submission
