If crows don't trade for Cal he goes into the draft , so that means anyone can pick him up, a trade secures his preferred destination.
STARC is a restricted free agent so a trade can be offered then matched by the club if need be, but it's actually so they keep pick 2 compensation pick.
Thanks for that.

I’m going to have to do a google because I don’t really understand how the free agency works.

Both are out of contract - why can they not just nominate their club and sign new contracts?

Achee isn't a free agent, can't just pick a club and walk in unless delisted without the other club receiving anything. BEST you do the research.

I’m confused by the trading side with picks returned.

Ah Chee and Starce are both out of contract aren’t they?

Why do we get anything in return?
Restricted free agents, so we can match. Still some negotiations to be had.

Cal doesn’t qualify as a free agent, so has to be traded or nominate for the draft.

Starce is a free agent, but compensation picks take into account if you bring in an equivalent contract. So we can’t get a compo pick for Starce because we are bringing in 2 free agents.

The real issue for west coast is that if they sign Starce as a free agent, they wouldn’t get compensation for Allen, which would likely be pick 2. So that is the reason why it will likely be a trade.

Out of contract means just that.

They are still tied to their current club and need a trade to move clubs be it a low or high draft pick.

Their value is where both clubs come to an agreement

Geez there appears to be a number of negative posts about either Draper and/or Allen…

You guys support a club that has played in 7 consecutive finals series, 3 straight grand finals, and won back to back premierships.

If that doesn’t make you trust the system, and trust that the people at the club actually know what they are doing, I’m not sure what will?!

Enjoy the success and enjoy the club. The glass is not half empty here!!

To be fair I think it’s a very vocal minority

All those people think we will win with the same list year after year and overrate some players.

So we are now 7 list spots down through delistings and retirements with 2 incoming (Allen and Draper) so that leaves 5 spots open. That is probably our most open list for a few years I suspect?

Congrats to Oscar. Very rare that fairytales happen in footy, but he got to live out one. Producers for next year’s ‘Pound the Rock’ will be licking their lips over the narrative.

Thinking there will definitely be one more from another club signed now based on the list spots we’ve got available.

We need another ruck, Max Knobel and Max Heath still listed as OOC this year on footywire.

Or we could go for Rhys Stanley, Todd Goldstien or Mason Cox.... :tonguewink:

IIRC there is a stat that a Premiership team first 22/23 have never played a game together again or am I misremembering.
If I'm remembering correctly, there's only been one team in V/AFL history that's actually played together again in consequent seasons. Bulldogs in the early 2000s. It's probably the most overblown stat you can find.

Trying to justify paying Starcevich $900 k a year over 6 years under the banner of loyalty is the kind of list management that quickly undid us during the three peat years. Clearly the club doesn’t want to make the same mistake. Paying less money for a Key Forward that is a need is better list management.
I remember Lethal saying in an interview a year or two ago that in 2000/2001 or so he went to the board and asked if they wanted as much short term success as possible, or potentially less short term success but more sustained long term competitiveness; and they opted for the former, which led to 2005 onwards.

Probably helps contextualise the list management strategies back then

I hope Allen will be okay to go preseason, but he does have injury history the last 2 years
Just 11 games in 2024 and 12 again in 2025.
Not just one issue either which is a worry
I would say the Eagles would be over the moon to get pick 2.
If that happens the Lions will have put forward a very big contract which is a big gamble for our future cap in my opinion.
Hopefully everything falls into place, and he has a good 3 years at the Lions

2024

The star forward has flown overseas this off-season to seek specialist after battling knee, foot and shoulder issues in recent years, with his knee, in particular, causing him to miss months of footy during the 2024 season.

According to Vlahos, Allen played through some injury troubles in his 11 AFL games last campaign and has since been told that his knee has degenerated somewhat and resembles a knee of someone in their late 30s or early 40s despite the forward being just 25 years old.

2025

WEST Coast co-captain Oscar Allen will officially miss the rest of the season after opting to undergo knee surgery while recovering from his calf and Achilles tendon injury.

Allen damaged his calf and Achilles during last week's loss to Carlton, with the Eagles initially holding out a slither of hope he could still return this year.

"Oscar has been dealing with some knee soreness related to his patella tendon," Eagles general manager of football Gavin
Bell said.

The Eagles initially suspected Allen had been struck down by a plantaris injury when he collapsed innocuously behind play, requiring assistance from two trainers to leave the ground in the final quarter, but subsequent scans revealed minor Achilles tendon damage as well as a left calf issue.
I’m not sure how much of this is specific to Oscar or not to be honest. I remember when I was a student seeing a retired soccer player in their early 40s getting a double hip replacement because their hips were just f*cked - the surgeon told me that it’s not actually uncommon for professional athletes to have multiple joints replaced after they retire because the added loads they get put under means that they get quite bad osteoarthritis very, very early
