Once the points bidding system was brought in the compensation should’ve been a certain amount of points and not arbitrary cutoffs between bands

Surely it's one of the easier fixes. The AFL has just not wanted to do anything with it because it is like a flexible assistance package.

Yep. I'm really surprised he's leaving now.

That must have been some offer /conditions /whatever.
Some people just reach a point where they've had enough of a place and want to go home to friends and family. He's achieved probably more than he imagined with the Lions and was presented with the opportunity to go home with a golden handshake. Some people never fully settle in a new city, and life as an expat can get tiresome when your entire social network is your work colleagues. (even if your work colleagues are a bunch of footballers living their best lives!).

He also now has the whole challenge in front of him, and to be a stand-out leader at that club. To bring a second club from the absolute bottom back into contention would be extremely rewarding.

Popping in (this kent ^ is here too?!) to wish you all the best with Oscar!

He's a great player - I really do mean that - a great set of hands and a great kick for goal.

It is genuinely disappointing to see him go but the right move for the Eagles.

He has been cotton wooled since day-dot at the Eagles - for your sake (and Oscar's) I hope he can do a bit of a Pat Cummins style recovery in his prime years (ie right now) and get himself on the park on a regular basis.

Go well!

End of first round should be the starting point for compo imo.

Thanks for dropping in. Yep Oscar appears a bit beat up but a few things fall in the Lions favour and how he will be managed. He will start with some pretty fantastic talent around him, Morris, Gallop, Rayner and Cameron so he wont be the big target with opposition backman spread around a bit more evenly. The changes to the ruck rule with the ball being thrown up I seem to read the result will be more jumping than wrestling and that helps him when he is in there. The 5th position on the bench allowing more 'rest' time to manage him in a multi pronged attack. He is not a Joe Daniher in the "what now, X factor good and bad" type but he will take a lot of pressure off those 2 young forwards.

Compensation should be Middle of the round, that’s inline with the F/S / Academy discussion of keeping the top 10 as pure as possible or end of round.

That might open the possibility of finalist being prepared to actually lose players as they could potentially get a pick 11 instead of 20+

If you removed being tied to finishing position, the compensation pick can become a little more flexible also, less positional fluctuating means they could potentially allow the club to elect future compensation.
Could imagine Essendon preferring the Draper compensation in 2026, as they have a rather strong hand now already, that lets them attack two drafts pretty hard. Gives teams with highly rated F/S / Academy players a chance to load up for drafts with some certainty of where the pick will land.

I like Oscar and think he will do very well playing for the Lions. So exciting to have this as our forward line: Allen, Morris, Gallop, Cameron, Rayner, Bailey (when not playing mid).

Unbelievable how much Gallop improved the last few games. His defensive pressure, tackling and follow up work was outstanding.
Any likelihood of promoting McFadyen to add to that list?

So we sort ah chee as next cab off the rank hopefully get a great pick , is that enough ? Any more player deals in the tube or are we done ? Perhaps some pick upgrades ?
Perhaps futures for our next years lot of rorting academics.

James Hird this morning doing his analysis of the Lions looking at 2026, certainly likes our chances of doing the 3Peat, made us sound almost unbeatable. He was stunned with the list of players we have who didn't even play in this years Grand Final.

His go to the next level player for us was Jaspa Fletcher.

Pick 44
Pick 50
Points = 2032 (pick 4 equivalent)

If Doedee has a good preseason I think he’ll find a spot. Kiddy as well but I don’t like the direct replacement for Starce defensively.

Long term Answerth is the obvious one but not sure if he’ll be back for the start of the season. Brain has a decent chance at it depending on the health of the other guys, think he has some pretty similar traits to Starce.
