1 won't happen. He wants the $$$$$, which is fair enough. He deserves to live out his AFL career getting good coin.

2 is unlikely as Cal has his heart on Adelaide.
So
When you look at the picks that other clubs gave up for players less credentialled than Cal, the Crows offer was a lowball try on if not an insult.

I feel for Cal being put through the proverbial wringer but It was important for us to demonstrate to the comp and to our own players that in future, we're not going to cop cynical unders from other clubs .

Cal will probably get to the Crows via the PSD but it's not guaranteed. There have been instances in the past where another club has jumped in.

The Lions and the Eagles scratched each other's backs in this trade period and it's not beyond the realms of possibility for the Eagles to pick up Cal via the PSD.

Irrespective, Adelaide's arrogance in this non-trade will hopefully, come back to bite them in thecfuture.

What goes around comes around
I agree. Eagles would be smart to start wooing him now and maybe pick him up with their Pick 1 in the PSD.

All things considered a good trade period for us; Geelong, Adelaide and Hawthorn stayed the same, and Collingwood got worse. Reckon Gold Coast losing depth and banking on a past-it Trac will come back to bite them (but obviously the JUH gamble could pay off).

Freo, Swans, Giants and Blues could improve next year.

I think the Swans are overrating their list massively. Curnow hasn't really helped Carlton do anything and he's injured a lot. Plenty of aging players on the swans list too. Should get naturally improvement out of Giants and Freo though. Carlton could surprise but look cooked for a few.

Imagine being in a trade negotiation with a club that wants 4x firsts and 1x second.

Ah Chee's manager just said Cal is determined to go to adelaide and he will walk through the PSD. If he does that, then that's a pretty shitty thing for him to do. Liam Baker refused to walk through the PSD last year because he wanted Richmond to get a fair deal, yet Ah Chee seems like he won't even do the same.

That was his manager who just missed out on a chunk of $$. Wait to hear from cal before you call him a shit bloke.

Wanted to pay the cash and not pay the picks.
Like the Saints now show a club not serious to get deals done.
Look at what the Swans paid for Curnow.

Hawks offered overs for Merrett who is 30. Stupid Bombers

Feel for Cal mostly in all this. Say what you want about both teams as to who was ultimately at fault for the deal not going through, but it leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth now from both parties for a guy who played a huge role in successive finals (particularly GFs), which ultimately lead to him becoming a dual premiership player with us.
Agree 100% with this. I think we’re in the minority though.

How does the PSD work?

West Coast pick Cal and they have to negotiate a contract?

If they can’t agree on a contract, Cal doesn’t sign anywhere?
he nominates his terms and whoever picks him will pay him what his terms are, if he choses to go the PSD they will jack up his price so its maximum pay over 2 years so no one else will pick him

I honestly couldn't care less for Cal. He has chosen to chase a big pay day, that's all well & good, no issue there.

But he has chosen a club that thought they could just open a cheque book, entice the player to leave & under compensate the club that has made him a two time premiership player.

If a deal was negotiated for a pick in the 20 - 25 range we would have jumped at it, and it would have been in the ball park of fair value.

The Crom have always been dead to me. Now Cal is too.

Why? It’s not Ah Chee’s fault (or problem). He hadn’t gone behind our backs.

Lions/Crows couldn’t get the deal done. He’ll walk straight to them in the PSD.

He won’t sign on for a year and “try again”. Thats fantasy. Why would he turn down a 5 year deal?

And no other club will poach him.

We move on.

Cal can state terms for which he will sign. So if he puts a price on his head (which would be pre-agreed with Adelaide), but another club agree to those terms, then he must sign with them, or sit out of football.

I think this is the final post trade period outcomes, cliff coming for the Pies IMO.

Pies are cooked. They already showed this year that they're on the slide with their abysmal end to the year. They'll front up again next year but not bringing in any meaningful depth for Howe and another midfielder is gonna cost them.

EDIT: And missing out on a replacement for Mihocek, who granted isn't much chop but is Buller really the answer?

Yeah maybe it’s just me being a bit naive, but ideally not burning relationships with premiership players on the way out from both sides would be the way to go imo. You’d imagine now though the relationship has soured, which you just hope doesn’t trickle back into any of the other guys on the list.

The melts on the crows board are delicious.

And as I said there, this was never about what was reasonable, it's about sending a message for the years to come, as many of our squad will be approached.

It's saying to the other clubs 'If you don't play our game, we will call your bluff', we're just sending a warning, as an example, as against gaining a few picks that really aren't worth a lot.
I agree. Clubs will come for our player. Morris, Lohman, Bailey next year. I’ve got no issue with us drawing a line in the sand. It sends a clear message to every player on our list. If you want out, the club chasing you better be ready to pay what we believe you’re worth.

Bailey’s a free agent next year, and if it comes to that, we’ll match the offer and demand compensation that reflects both his contract value and his on-field impact, just like we’ve done with Ah Chee.

This isn’t about being difficult. It’s about setting a standard. We’re not in the business of giving away talent for unders. If other clubs want our players, they’ll need to come to the table properly.

Obviously coming from a fan perspective. But it doesn't feel like we were asking for the world for him...

From all reports we wanted to keep him... so surely his manager is smart enough to recognise Cal wasn't going to be going for a late 2nd rd pick... if he wasn't... maybe a better manager is in order Cal!

Yeah I get it. I don't think anyone at the club wanted this situation to pan out like it has.

If a deal was structured that got us Pick 25 as an example, it would have gone through.

The list management teams first responsibility is to the Lions. The club comes first.

Adelaide offered a marque offer to the player to get him over but a fringe player trade to get the deal done.

That's a shit club.

It also makes a point in future that if any player is being tempted by a big offer, maybe their manager should check that the club is prepared to pony up the draft capital to fairly compensate in a trade.

Sometimes it's not best to keep a player if they feel like they have been dumped on. They won't perform to their best. Will be interesting to see where this all ends up. Wonder how Cal is feeling at the moment.
I also wonder what some of our other players think.
Can’t say I know the full story but the way I see it he has been here for 6 years
Been a champion for our club
Out of contract
Wanting to get back closer to the family.
Funny business this football caper
I really hope Cal is on board with what has passed and was informed of what was required.
I personally think we could have sucked it up to get him to his preferred destination.
