There’s no way we delist Joyce if Lester and somehow Gardiner retires before 30. Just last year we had injuries that ended up seeing Hipwood down back for a game. I doubt we just leave ourselves even more vulnerable like that.

We would be looking at keeping at least two of Day, Gardiner, Lester and Joyce. Incredible amount of mature key position depth lost if we willingly choose to delist any of them if two or more of the others choose to retire.

Agreed. I also think for that reason the pursuit of Leek Aleer makes a lot of sense.

We have so many young midfielders coming through that will help to keep us challenging for a while, but not much in the way of younger key position stocks.

Aleer has talent, and in my opinion would find a spot in our backline - noting Doedee is no certainty to play consistent AFL football again given his injury history.

A bit early in the season to make predictions on free agents.
However, in reply to MagpieExcalibur

Lions:
Craven - Only turns 21 in June so let's see how he goes in 2025
Day - Depends on how 2025 unfolds
Gardiner - Depends on how 2025 unfolds
Joyce - 1 year
Lester -1 year
Starcevich - A definite spanner in the works regarding concussion. Then you have trade talks. Unknown till years end.
Zorko (extends for another year)

It is also a numbers game and sometime during this season a few below will re-sign or resign.
Then you have the draft numbers.

2025: - OOC List from Roster Watch

Darcy Craven (R)

Brandon Ryan?

Aleer does make sense when you look at those names in that way. But agree I dont see us letting all of Gardiner, Lester and Joyce go at once. How many years has Joyce had as a rookie? Does he need to be upgraded? I dont actually mind him as mature back up so would be happy for him to stay on the list for another year or so

Aleer would be a great get and we've been into him since draft year haven't we?

I do know there was a section on one of the shows that there are a large number of teams interested in him now. So what would it take to get him if we traded for him and do we have the capital to get him and Annable and Geesu or whoever else from the academy in?

I really question that with big, heavy blokes.

Some sports players just don’t appear to have the physical attributes required to improve certain aspects of athletic ability.

Big fellas can get a bit more explosive speed but it's a trade off with muscle exhaustion and time on ground.

A main set for a 100m sprinter can be add much s 4× 80m sprints. If a distance rubber who do say 6×1k reps at top speed.

That's what makes the big fellas that can also run all day exceptionally rare. And valuable.

Rob De Castella was a world class marathon runner back in the day and was considered an absolute freak because he was 180 cm tall. He towered over the other runners. Mind you he probably weighted 65 kgs - skinny as.

Craven (delist)
Day (retires)
Gardiner (retires)
Joyce (delist)
Lester (retires)
Starcevich (will be medically retired , re-signs or gets traded)
Zorko (extends for another year)
Gardiner - I'm doubtful he retires. He is good depth and will likely get some AFL games this year.
Joyce - As above.
Lester - Why would he retire? He is still arguably in career best form.

Is Essendon allowing Draper to enter FA as an unrestricted fa a massive doo doo?

I don’t rate Draper but he is an established player coming into his prime years. Because of Essendon’s terrific contract work seems like he will either walk to Adelaide and Essendon will receive woeful compensation or Essendon will have to overpay to keep him.

Thank you for putting this together 🙏

Can’t see us delisting Joyce though, regardless of whether Gardiner and Lester retire…I also see those two as being willing to go round one more time and both would be cheap, experienced depth players while we’re in a flag window

Agree with the others though

On the contrary, its unintentional genius list management as it stops them from matching a stupid offer from Adelaide and they just take a compo pick - maybe end of first round.

Very true. I was assuming he’d get some offer which would give them a 2nd rounder.

I'd honestly rather the club trade 3 1st round picks for Ethan Read than to sign Oscar Allen on a free.

Moneyball
Brisbane is close to locking away last year’s Norm Smith medallist Will Ashcroft on a long-term deal commensurate with his growth as one of the most exciting young players in the game.
This column understands the Lions are increasingly confident they will be in a position to announce a new deal sooner rather than later for the 20-year-old.
Ashcroft, who edged out Lachie Neale to take out the best player afield honours in last year’s grand final, is already contracted until the end of the 2026 season.
But with the Lions humming towards a potential third grand final appearance in succession, locking away one of its most exciting stars would be a significant boost.
It might be a double bonus as Will’s brother Levi Ashcroft is also eligible to unlock a two-year contract extension after round 6 after a pre-draft agreement as a father-son selection.
Under recent AFL rules, clubs are not able to get a top-20 draft selection to lock in contract extensions until round 6 of their debut season — a mark that the younger of the Ashcroft siblings will hit this weekend.

I'd honestly rather the club trade 3 1st round picks for Ethan Read than to sign Oscar Allen on a free.
If Allen comes to The Lions it will not be for the money because Brisbane just dont pay big money.
I'm still not convinced we need him at this stage either. Arent we 5 zip right now? Going along Ok with what we got I believe.
