Our biggest, most glaring need.
i think we are pretty well set between andrews, payne and lester with doedee, gardiner and joyce as depth, zakostelsky and lloyd developing and hipwood (dare i say even allen) having the capacity to play there if needed.

although we have had an embarrassment of riches when it comes to small forwards in recent history, i would suggest we need to start looking at getting mccarthy / cameron replacements on the list, particularly with ah chee's departure. we need another genuine small forward to partner with lohmann going forward, especially if bailey continues to play increased midfield time.

Just heard the lads on SEN drive show talk about the possibility of West Coast bidding on Carlton's f/s with pick 2.

Anything is possible, but I prefer to think all clubs have a list of 1 to 60 or so players in order and they read out the name of the highest name available on their list.

The dealings between us & West Coast seemed pretty amicable, so too our dealings with Essendon over the years, so I doubt there's an axe to grind anywhere.

You could argue it makes tactically more sense for West Coast to nobble Carlton's draft position more than ours. They will be vying against Carlton as both teams try to rebuild their respective lists and work up the ladder towards finals.

I'd love it if a big Victorian club missed out on a father-son prospect with the new rules around the bidding system.

For next year maybe.
But we need to be drafting for 2,3 ,4 and 5 years ahead.
The highlighted will all turn 30+ in 2027 (some well over), 3 of whom are not Key Talls.

We swapped 17 to hawks for 21 and Future 3rd.

Which I find interesting as we did not need a Future 3rd and drew a line in the sand for AhChee :)
we clearly have more than we need this year, so doing a swap to next year makes sense rather than getting nothing. getting nothing for AhChee also makes sense if you're the list manager. the only part that sucks about the Ah Chee non-trade is Adelaide still have the picks they offered up.

a point well made - I would contend that by the time we are looking to turn over andrews, gardiner and doedee our list will probably be in a drastically different shape than it is now and that this is 4-5 years away. the only one who we probably need to immediately replace in the 23 is lester, which really should be doedee's spot in the side if he can get match fit.

and we will get jordan ridley at some point too :sneaky:

I think we'll be okay not taking one this year if the talent isn't there, as long as we grab two in the next two drafts. My explanation is below:

Now that it looks like Thredgold will go in the first round, I'm not sure there's a key defender worth taking this year that will be available to us. Last year's crop was better and next year's will probably be better too. While I previously thought we need a KPD prospect coming in this year to ensure we're prepared for when Gardiner and Andrews retire, now I think it's okay to wait a year or two, so we don't have to force it this year if we don't rate the talent.

2027 is the year that our academy has multiple promising KPP options (Boothey, Dobbie, Bickerton) and it may be worth ensuring that at least one of them has the space and opportunity to develop on our list. It doesn't hurt to have multiple tickets if you're trying to win the talent lottery, but there's also only so many young talls we'll be able to give VFL playing time to, so we shouldn't go overboard either. 4 mature KPDs and 2 developing at any one time is probably enough.

Andrews is 29 next season, Gardiner is 30 and ZZ is 20. For simplicity let's say every KPD plays their final season at age 33 and is either AFL ready at age 22 or won't make it. With these assumptions, we'll get 4 more years out of Gardiner, 5 more out of Andrews, and we can make the call on ZZ in 2 years. That means we'd have the space for 2 developing KPDs on the list from the 2025-27 drafts.

At the latest, we'd need a Gardiner replacement for 2030 and an Andrews replacement for 2031. If the replacements are at least 22 when they step up, and are drafted at 18, then they can be drafted as late as... 2026 and 2027. Excellent timing. So we don't absolutely need one in this draft.

Of course, that's a best case scenario. Maybe someone has a career ending injury, or someone retires earlier, or the players we draft need more time to develop than what I've assumed. But the point is, at this stage it isn't critical to draft a KPD this year.

Unless Gallop ends up there. Even so, am I correct in that we look like we might have some highly regarded talls coming in the next year or two?
