Agree it’s an issue that he doesn’t ruck, but I’d argue Day has been ineffective when in the middle anyway. I know some thought he was okay on the weekend, but he is still a fair way off cementing his place IMO.

With respect to OA, he’s got the capability to be an A grade forward in a good side. If he wants to come, bring him in, and keep tinkering with the second ruck set up. Remember, Shaun Grigg is a premiership second string ruck..

Edit: the other thing to note is that Joe wasn’t spoken of as a second ruckman until a couple of years back. Oscar might actually have it in him to play some minutes there to give the primary ruck a chop out.

Don't think Allen is worth the cost, he's been pretty average for a lot of his career and injury prone. And I'm assuming he won't come cheap.

Mitch Lewis would be the one worth a punt. Injury prone too but I think he's genuine A grader.

Disclaimer that I haven’t watched or paid much attention to the AFL for the last year and a bit but last I remember was Allen was one of the next big things as a key forward and did a bit of work in the ruck as well. Has he really fallen off that far or is the horrible situation he is in not being taken into account enough?

When I heard he was linked to us I thought it was too good a replacement for Joe to be true but maybe I’m a bit behind the times.

Mitch Lewis is always injured and even then hasn't shown as much as Allen has. Both have risks but would say Allen is far more likely given he's a free agent and he's very clearly going to leave the Eagles.

Lewis would cost a minimum of a first round pick to get this year, and I doubt the Hawks let him go. Also, Allen is actually younger!

Below from wheeloratings.
Just to see if any other player might do the job over Day and Allen
I have started with the ending of what wheeloratings have classed as a pure ruck.
The list is in average hit outs order.
The headings state totals but they are averages except for goals
Day at the top of H/O list but not when you look at other categories.

Eagles played Allen in defense against the Hawks on the weekend, and the coach said its something they may consider for the rest of the season. If that isn't saying their ready and happy for him to leave, I don't know what does. Bit of a kick in the teeth for the captain. Why would you try your guts out for a club that would do that. I can totally understand his underwhelming performances.

Gotta remember too, he's not many games back from injuries that has kept him out of the game for a long time. A few games last year and 7 this season. He's really still gaining match fitness, touch and confidence in his body.

I'm all for bringing him into the club. I also don't think the cash would be as high as people are estimating here. Put him in a good team and he will perform, just as he did a few yrs ago when the Eagles were strong. When ya weaken a team, like the Eagles are now, because of retirements, players leaving etc and you're replacing them with inexperienced youth, as we've seen the area to suffer will be attack. And the player that will suffer the most is a key fwd. If he's not getting the ball, no matter how much he tries he's likely to be ineffective.

If Allen remains fit, he definitely has the size and skill to add to our fwd set up and ruck support for a good 4 or 5 years.

I do like Gallop, but he is still young and has proven inconsistent so far. He also needs to develop some ruck ability to slot into the team as it functions now. He has the build and aggression to do it, how long it takes to make him an Afl player is unknown. Look at the years that have been put into Henry Smith and he's still not ready. It's a bird in the hand with Oscar Allen, rather than 2 in the bush with Smith n Gallop.

yeesh, I'm sure Allen's level is a lot better than what he's currently playing at, but that's way too much for someone like him.

I think you're oversimplifying things a bit too much.

Our management of the salary cap has been excellent since the Fev saga.

Have some faith in the very intelligent people running the club. They're doing an excellent job and I'm sure that's not about to change

I'm pretty basic on the analysis tools so using afltables as my data source, but if you compare Joe Daniher and Oscar Allen, their respective career progression is remarkably similar. Joe is the better player, higher numbers across all key stats, but Joe was one-of-a-kind.
For those that suggest Oscar Allen can't pinch hit in the ruck, in his 2nd-4th season he collected 155 hit-outs. He dropped off doing the ruck thing after that. Joe had 131 hitouts in the same years of his career, and subsequently had 159 hitouts in his 4 years with us.

In season 2-5 OA kicked 119 goals. Joe kicked 170 in the same period of his career.
Season 6 they both started having injury issues. Joe's plagued him for 3 years. OA has played (almost?) every game this year... but as noted his year this year looks quite similar to Joe's final year at Essendon - clearly the motivation and team support is lacking.

We're not going get another Joe Daniher. But for mine, OA as a free agent is about the best option out there. Regarding the $'s... it's worth listening to last weeks roar deal podcast. They spoke at length to Lachie & Linc's manager. It's not always about dollars. We can offer any free agent coming the chance for success, a well-run organisation, and the opportunity to live life out of the spotlight. Oscar may be willing to take a few less dollars to get a shot at that.

To be absolutely honest, Joe Daniher was being massively underpaid.
Especially now the cap has increased as it has.

The big issue is who else is available that doesn't cost draft capital we do not have?
With Gallop, aside from it not being a great idea to have him pinch hit in the ruck at this stage, is I'm not sure if any team would want to have 2 of their 3 key forwards being under 20/21.
That could be a major reason why we are playing Day when in theory we could be getting a similar output from Gallop but getting games into him for the future.
I think you take proven talent, which OA is, when if you can get it.
Plenty of solid reasons why he isnt proven talent.
