Impossible to be able to say 'how can they do it' re Allen unless there is intimate knowledge of A) our salary cap and B) any players that leave / could leave. Eg we could have a strong sense one of Kai or Starce will go. That's a fair whack of money

As others have pointed out we will be front-loading Joe's money and that will help

I am struck by how few players have left for money reasons the past couple of years. A few from Richmond for obvious reasons. I feel as though the salary cap jumps are staying ahead of player demands, and clubs have resisted making it all out war and inflating the pay packets. Maybe clubs such as North are struggling to pay the full cap?

Oscar Allen: West Coast Eagles skipper says he’s ‘not sure what the future lies’ amid rival clubs’ interest
Out-of-contract West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen has refused to be drawn into speculation around his future as rival clubs ramp up their pursuit of the superstar forward.
Allen looms as one of the highest-profile free agents this year. A new Eagles deal is seemingly a significant way off, with the club and Allen’s management at an impasse despite elongated negotiations.
Reigning premiers Brisbane are one of several rival clubs interested in the 25-year-old as they look for a long-term replacement for retired forward Joe Daniher.
Allen is believed to be in discussions with the Eagles but his manager is also fielding calls from others clubs around a long-term deal for the West Perth product.
When asked about his future, Allen expressed his desire to be at the Eagles but remained non-committal.
It is believed Allen’s main priority at the moment is captaining the club through the transition under new coach Andrew McQualter.
McQualter said he was confident Allen would re-sign with the Eagles.

The fact that it has played out so publicly smells a little like us being used as leverage. As someone else has pointed out, historically we have not leaked under the current regime. So one would assume it's come from Allen's camp. V surprised if he ends up in Lions' colours
Had the exact same thought. West Coast not committing to a longer deal, so his management is trying to force their hand. Similar to the Charlie Cameron Freo rumours of last year. That potentially leveraged one more year out of us than what we were initially willing to offer.

You'd think that West Coast, needing some results to likely sway Harley Reid into signing, will end up moving on years offered for their captain (if he stays healthy) to help ensure they remain mildly competitive whilst they rebuild. Aside from May and Lynch from GC, I can't think of too many captains that leave for comparable money.

I think that the KPF we end up with will be a contracted player - and again I think that it's likely to be Lewis.

Maybe not leverage just on the current club.

Player managers - we'll keep the story of captain moving to rival club alive for 3 months and thousands of clicks for $$. Any bids?

Going to be the odd man out here but I’m really not that interested in Lewis.

Don’t want to give up draft picks for that injury profile (I know Allen has been injured a lot too - but it’s not my money we’d be paying).

I 100% agree with this. If we are talking about recruiting a big fish, Mitch Lewis doesn’t fit that profile.

Being excited about recruiting Lewis means buying into him being at a standard that only hawks fan podcasts think he is (why are there so many of them?).

Not for me!

Hokball will capture your heart my friend. Embrace it.

Totally agree he is no Allen. I’m just imagining the back page of the West Australian should the Eagles lose their captain over one or two years on a contract. That alone makes me think they’ll cave.

Lewis having links to the playing group, a reliable poster on the Hawks board intimating there was interest from us, and our track record with getting players right after serious injuries is all I’m going on.

I could be way off, and this time next year we are tracking Allen in the match sims which would be very nice.

Lewis would be on par with Allen if he could play a full season

I find it hard to get a sense of this. Allen has never played no.1 KPF has he? Has he always been ~3rd tall?

Lewis is perennially injured and when he's not he is a solid KPF, but nothing special.

I suppose its a limited market.

Lewis has twice played 15 games in a season and kicked 36 and 37 goals in those seasons. Could’ve been 2, 55 goal seasons before he turned 25 if he played the entire season and continued his form.

Any key forward who can kick 2.5 goals a games is pretty special

It’s a good ratio. Recent injury record is as bad or worse than Allen, and we’d have to trade for him which I’m not keen on.

My other worry with both - their best goal tallies are when they’ve been the main target in a bad team (you can quibble with this for Lewis - maybe Gunners was).

There is a certain fakeness to those numbers; someone has to be targeted inside 50 on a bad team.

It has led to the crimes of the watermann AA and larkey AA in recent years over Joe because we’ve had functioning forward lines around him. And still he put up these numbers:

Given concerns, prioritise the guy who won’t cost you a draft pick (or two) imo.

Brings home how lucky we were to have Joe.

When you look around it's a big drop off to whoever else is gettable.

That AA team last year was a mockery. They should apologise and say the system was hacked and re-release it with the actual team of the season.
