In fairness to the recruiters don’t think we had an earlier pick or the capacity to trade up?
We did not, our first Pick was originally 30. Which was a result of trading our 2023 1st and 2nd round picks, among other picks, to get Dunks in 2022. We did move up to Pick 24 to draft Morris via a trade with Gold Coast for Picks 30, 50, 54, and 65 though

But to get to my original point Morris is one of those annoyingly sized forwards who's hard to match upon. Because he can jump a lot higher than guys much taller than him but still has the ground skills of a smaller guy.

I know people are getting carried away with him and I don't think I'm one of those , but the sum total of the attributes he shows are well ahead of where you'd expect a 20 yo KPP to be. Albeit he gets very good service on occasions but has the smarts many don't have to get to the right spots and dispose of it very well most of the time.

Pretty much where I am at with him. I can totally understand why Essendon took caddy well ahead of Logan, and I can understand why some teams might still prefer caddy for the perceived athleticism difference.

Logan is going to be a very good player, not sure yet he’s going to be one of the best at his position in the comp - but the fact that is even a question is an enormous compliment to him and says a lot.

The knocks on Morris pre-draft were, not true KPP height, not very athletic, or fast, or agile.

But he had a better draft year than Caddy, who is the significantly better athlete, and Caddy has genuine telescopic arms.

Morris absolutely maximises his athletic gifts, and as many have mentioned, he’s a natural footballer and just knows where to run.

Lloyd is taller, but Logan’s shoulder height is actually above Lloyd’s.

I haven’t got their measurables, but I’d bet that Logan has a higher standing reach than Lloyd.

I’d be genuinely surprised if Logan is taller than 192cm.

One of the biggest bugbear of mine is the fixation on height as a be-all-and-end-all for forwards. While it's true that the taller guys will have proportionally longer arms, there's so much more to it than that.

As mentioned, shoulder height, arm length, vertical jump, even finger length all contribute to the pure physical measurables involved at meting the ball at the highest point possible. Then you factor in spatial awareness, stereoscopic acuity.... there's just so much more to it, which is why you can have a guy like Jamie Elliot who plays effectively as a key forward despite being under six foot.

I thought Logan was Aaron Cornelius mk2. Doing a bit better than he did (albeit in a much better team).

As someone who loved Ace, I had a similar thought. His IQ and being able to outmark and out position elite defenders is next level.

Going back to his draft profile, there were really no big knocks outside of "yeah...but he isn't 200+ cm tall" and I think we're seeing how sometimes you've got to just pick guys with high IQ and not overthink it.

Probably the biggest issue for recruiters is you can make up an extra yard or 2 on an opponent by being smarter, concentrating and out working an opponent.

Don't think he's quite there athletically but some of his ground level work last year made me see more Matthew Pavlich than Aaron Cornelius

My understanding is that Charlie has done a lot of mentoring work with Logan and Joe seemed to be helping him a lot on-field last year as well. I suspect these two have contributed significantly to his development.

Agree. He also seems to be very serious about improving his football knowledge and skills. Mentioned working on his goal kicking every day in an interview.

Crazy he's doing this at (just turned) 20, too. Is only going to get better and better with more pre seasons.

Logan may not have explosive pace or be super tall.
But what I see (and others of course) is someone with very good skills especially overhead marking, quick hands and a very high footy IQ.

His decision making for someone so young and relatively inexperienced at AFL level is remarkable.
The other thing that stands out is his composure. He just seems so relaxed, almost casual, in high pressure situations.

That's actually what impresses me most. The capacity to get where the ball is first and then the innate footy sense as to when to hold on to it ,when to shut down the contest or when to dish it off straight away. And to complete those actions effectively. That's something many players never get.

He's working on his athleticism and that seems to be on the improve as well.

Not yet. He's not going anywhere so plenty of time to see the lie of the land at season's end.

The funniest thing about Morris was the look on Fagan's face after he took his second speccy in his first practice match. Fagan turned to the others in the box with this incredulous look on his face as if to say who the hell is this guy.

Which begs the question how did he get to pick 31. If he was doing that in his first turnout it was nothing to do with us and surely that sort of talent must have been evident just a few months prior.

I'm interested in any perspectives of those who follow the draft.

Plenty of pre-draft vision beginning Here.
Includes an insightful comment from #lionshine .
From memory these were "warts and all" clips.

For my two bobs worth on him getting to our selection in the draft, I think we can thank the Vic Metro selectors for playing him in defence in two of the National Championship games !

(Apologies for some of the quality - I think I have improved since then)

Gallop Morris will be a great combo
100%, I'm extremely bullish on Ty, very physical for such a young player, good pace too which is mainly on display with his defensive pressure. Clever in a marking contest, like Logan doesn't lose a lot of 1 v 1 contests.

I think Ty and Logan will compliment each other well when they eventually get together on a consistent basis.

Big frame too. He's going to be a monster with a few pre seasons in the gym.

Touch wood it doesn’t happen, but if Day goes down I’d prefer we just cop the downside and play Gallop in his place or go small. Trying to shoehorn rucks as forward or Gardiner, isn’t the answer.

I actually really like the triple combo with Hipwood as well. They are all quite different and dont look like the sort of players that will get in each others way too much. I reckon the three of them could be a deadly combination sooner than later if we dont bring another forward in

Aren't we supposed to be bringing in Oscar Allen for years and years ?
