I agree on the slide but if it's a shallow draft, all the more reason Adelaide want to be closer to the top of it - along with club club-media excitement around having a pick in the top-20.

Having said that, the onus is on Adelaide to come to the party on this one. They've gone after Ah Chee, made the big contract offer without currently having the draft capital to get the deal done (if they don't want to lose their first-round pick).
I'm sure something will be worked out, but unlike the GH5 period, our list management team won't be bent over this time. We have an asset that is worth more than they're offering. it's now up to Adelaide and Cal's manager to figure out how to get it done. No one wants to be seen doing a St Kilda!
I don't think Murray will let Cal down, just couldn't see that happening , but yes it seems they might have overstretched and now have to figure out a way of getting it done.

Plenty of future picks if Adelaide want to get it done. I suspect it will happen.
you think so
With how they went out in straight sets they need experiance of a guy like Cal in the team. Tex on his last legs.
We can cover his loss more than I think the Crows missing out on him.
Honestly they have to get real lucky with a player around 20-21 mark in the draft, to have the same impact next year

I agree but this is a club in the window right now, not a bottom 8 club. They need seasoned players not draftees. I assume they’ve got some youth anyway given they finished low on the ladder the last few years

Is there any chance at all that Ah Chee stays in Brisbane?

IIRC we offered him 4 years, is that correct?
I do not think he burnt his bridges like Merrett has at the Bombers.
Be a bit like GWS Aleer being sold a contact worth $700k to come to the Saints..
Now told nope sorry. Stuff the Crows up like I think Aleer will the Saints for next guy they go after.

Adelaide may swap pick 16 with another club.
Anything can happen these days to find level ground for trades.
The crows aim should be to get Ah-Chee and the earliest R2 pick they can in this draft.

I think it eventually lands somewhere between pick 20-25 points wise.

Adelaide should be in contention next year.
Ah-Chee would be a safer bet than a speculative pick likely to be pick 16+

How the Crows get to that (20-25 points wise) only they will know what's planned

Brisbane will obviously try and get the best deal they can.
But at the end of the day a good servant of the club wants a move, so the Lions should find a way.

We did. Dom said the club gave Ah Chee a really generous offer and he still picked Adelaide over us. I'm actually a little bit disappointed in Cal considering we revived his career and we did seriously want to keep him, and he still wanted to go elsewhere. Hope the club stands firm and lets him know if the deal doesn't get done, then he needs to potentially look at other clubs. He's not a star by any means, but he's a vital utility player for us.

I have no doubt the deal will get done, but Adelaide are a fellow contender. You don't let a player of Cal's quality walk into their starting 23, without extracting the rightful pound of flesh...
I'm sure as always it's posturing and see what deals can get done and it will be done for something as you've suggested.

From Doms interview it sounds like if the Crows don’t come to the table our focus will be on getting Cal to re-sign

Likely just a negotiating tactic though
We can't forget the eagles though. He's from perth and we know the eagles chased hard for him, so Cal could easily get to them through the PSD if he wanted to. However, i don't think he would screw the club like that and I'm not sure if he would go to a club that won't be contending during his playing days.

We probably have enough points now this year.
Maybe we offer a little more and keep Cal

He may not want to go to Perth

Whats going on at the Suns? Finally come good and then have an exodus.

Getting some bad contracts off the books?

Yeah very odd. Ainsworth, Budarick, Flanders were in their side that played us in the finals.

Good chat with Dom Ambrogio at 13:32: https://www.afl.com.au/news/1439372/trade-talk-live-friday-october-10
(I don't know how to embed it).

Gives a good explanation on Starce's departure (and may help to ease those who have been so aggressive on here about not paying him enough money because we're bringing in Draper & Allen), and not really understanding why Cal wants to leave.
Also mentions Doedee had a procedure a month ago, Bailey, Dev, WAsh, Linc, and we're done after we've signed FA's and draft - no surprise signings.

Rosas: Wants more games, Fiorini: OOC, Budarick: Wants to play as a small defender, Flanders: Wants to play as a mid, & Ainsworth: Just had a baby with his partner and wants to be closer to family. Club side of the story is they want to get Trac, JUH, and accumulate points for their academy products in the draft this year.

It's happened several times (Stevens, McCarthy, and a Freo rookie in the last couple of years, all off the top of my head), and part of the reason it is rare is because clubs only walk players to it in cases where they know the player will drop through to them, e.g. they've got a top four or so pick and they're going to pay the player something disproportionate to their abilities. Neither applies here.
Freo were moving a young ruck from the senior list to their rookie list, so had delisted him with a commitment to redraft him to the rookie list.

Kid was from Victoria, was happy at Freo, but it was known that if Freo didn’t pick him up, he wanted to go back to Victoria.

The rookie draft was held during the preseason, late morning WA time. Freo were out on the field training, when one of the assistant coaches walked up to Max Knoble and told him Gold Coast just picked him with pick 4 in the rookie draft, and he had to finish training.

Knoble signed a two year contract when he landed on the GC.

I’d expect just about every club with cap room, West Coast, Melbourne, Essendon, Port, etc, would all pick up Ah Chee in the PSD if he went that route.

Getting out a lot of players with fat contracts that haven’t performed up to it.

Ainsworth is a finesse small forward, doesn’t win groundballs or pressure - not a dimma style small forward.

Fringe players reading the room and looking for more playing time. That and they’ve handed out a couple of big contracts recently and have another big academy crop this year.
