Imagine if Bailey decided to leave and chose Adelaide.

That's for next year, he'll be restricted free agent and out of our hands.
For now, having fun with Ah Chee thread is the best thing to do.

Norf trying to find a club who will make a bigger mistake this trade & draft period to undo the mistake they made & damage they did last year.

Lol, good luck with that. Ain't happening.
Norf is considering giving leek aleer a bonkers contract 😬😬😬

All players play roles. I think there is still a clear distinction between a role player and a star player.

A star player has some combination of unique attributes that let's them perform highly in such a way that they disproportionately affect the outcome of a match compared to their peers. These are the players that you set down first and then design your teams game plan and strategy around.

A role player is someone who has more average talents and output and as such play a supporting role in the strategy compared to the primary role played by star players

Harris Andrews is a star player. He is so talented that we can play him as the second deepest defender on his own. He sits about 60m away from the stoppage and is free to roam rather than play man on man. He then is free tp negate opposition attacks, intercept and rebound as much as he wants. It also lets our half backs play high up and even go to the stoppage themselves. That's how you end up with Wilmot, Zorko etc at the F50 stoppage driving attacks. Our whole defensive strategy and rebounding depends on Harris Andrews

Its clear that if dont have Andrews, we cannot play that same type of football. When Harris was out and we had Joyce covering, we went to a more flood based defence instead of our typical high press because we knew we couldn't depend on Joyce to do what Andrews did.

You can see the same effect at the Cats with Tom Stewart. His presence enables the cats to play high press turnover football and get rebound 50s. When he is notbthere, there is a dramatic difference in Cats quality and they cannot play the same way.

Hence in our defence I would have Andrews as our star and guys like Lester, Gardiner, Answerth etc as role players.

Note, role players can still have star qualities without being star players. Some roles in the team do not alter strategies or tactics that much that it's hard to not be just a role player despite being elite at that given role. Ruck is a perfect example. Players like Witts or Cameron are clearly top tier rucks but largely their respective teams play the same strategies regardless if they are in the team or not. They are star role players. Gawn on the other hand is such an outlier, Melbourne designed their game plan around him and play like a different team when he is not there. He is a star player.

I would have Starc as a star role player. He is probably the best player for the role he plays in defense as a medium defender. He has a significant impact on our performance if he plays well. However, we wont have to completely change the way we play just because he has left.

Compare that to Daniher retiring. We would play stoppage football and travel more up the wings to get the ball into F50 in 2024. We would rely on Joes forward craft to make our F50 entries work. With Daniher leaving we had to change the way we play to be more quick ball, overlapping run through the corridor to try and assist our makeshift forward line. We had to rely on midfielders pressing up more and hitting the scoreboard.

Also a star or role player is a dynamic thing. Charlie used be our star player when our whole attack in 2020 was designed to get him isolated and open. Now he is more of a role player playing as a pressure small forward.

With any list strategy you need to prioritise in keeping those star players in amd fitting role players around them. Hence I would rather lose Starc or Ah Chee than lose Andrews, Ashcroft etc. Logan Morris has the potential to become a star player. Bailey is interesting. At his best he is anclear star player that you build your whole teams stoppage clearance game around. Last year I would have him more as a role player. Next year he could take over as a star player. Would definitely priorities keeping him

Things could be worse. We could be either of these clubs.

It's like the ocean's parting and mediocrity finally trying to leave North Melbourne list for once - only for North to desperately cling on to it and not wanting to let go. Crazy.

if i were norf id take collingwood's future first for simpkin and run.

see it slightly similar to us and rocky in 2017. both teams had better options for their midfield coming up under their former centre piece of their midfield. rocky injury prone, but better player and free agent. simpkin more durable, current captain but gives norf a chance to get his horrible bloated contract off the books.

i dont think we were unhappy with the outcome we got for rockliff in the end.

Unless we compare that outcome to Geelong's compensation for Steven Motlop 🙄

Have Collingwood offered that 2026 picks yet, I’ve seen the Kangas are posturing for 2 x First rounders, which has to be 2026/27 as they traded this years for Houston.

Good points you’ve outlined, if that pick was on offer outright, think most neutrals would be for that trade.

Out of all the teams in the 8, Collingwood looks the most vulnerable, with their aging list and losing Mihocek can’t be underestimated, can’t bank on Elliot have another career year and kicking 60.

If they can show signs of decent improvement, sitting on two first rounders and cash could be handy with potentially Butters and King looking to move back to Victoria.

I see some big problems for Port in 2026.
The only other player they are linked to is Will Brody for a later pick than 49

Who’s left: Rory Atkins (retired), Travis Boak (retired), Ryan Burton (delisted), Jeremy Finlayson (delisted), Dylan Williams (delisted), Hugh Jackson (delisted), Lachie Charleson (delisted), Willie Rioli (retired), Jed McEntee (delisted)

Who’s arrived: Jacob Wehr (free agent, GWS Giants), Corey Durdin (trade, Carlton)

Current 2025 draft picks

49

They picked up 3 in the MSD

True, those being:

Liddy: 9 games R14-24 so looks like he was the best of the three. Average 14 Disposals, 4.1 marks and 2.2 tackles
Mackinlay and Ramm only played R24 probably to see what they could do.
Not sure of their contract status

CALLUM AH CHEE (Brisbane)
Linked to:
Adelaide

One of the more interesting negotiations of this trade period. What was thought to be a relatively simple transaction has now stalled, with the Lions asking Adelaide for one of Pick 16 or a 2026 first-rounder. The Crows believe their future second-round pick is worthy of a trade, but they may have to find another future second-rounder from somewhere to get Brisbane to budge. If not, Ah Chee could threaten to walk himself to the pre-season draft, but that seems highly unlikely.

Potential trade: Brisbane gets 2026 second-round pick and Pick 55. Adelaide get Callum Ah Chee.

I wonder if we will have a talk to Ah Chee and see if he is open to staying with us if a suitable trade can't be done.

Has Cal got family in Adelaide? IIRC he went to Perth for his Grandfathers funeral late in the season.

His parents have moved to Adelaide apparently. If the deal falls through I think we're a chance to talk him into staying.

Doubt it. His decision was made in July/August
Yep if Cal says he definitely does not want to stay in Brisbane we will just get the deal done and take the hit, we end up with a future Crows 2nd rounder which would be a gross underpay with it likely to end up a pick in the 40s.

I'd usually agree but there is a 3-peat on offer here. I think it's a great carrot to dangle in front of any player out there.

Below was him late last year btw.

The Examiner even managed to sneak a couple of questions in between photos.

Unfortunately for WA, Callum Ah Chee is determined to stay in Brisbane for the long haul.

“I had a chance to play for the Eagles once, but nah – I’ve got a wife and two kids and Brisbane is home now,” he said.

So, what’s up next for this homegrown talent?

“For my whole life my dream was to play in an AFL Grand Final – and I’ve done that twice now,” he said.

“My next big goal is to make 100 games, which I’m pretty close to now. That way my son can be drafted into the club too.

“But yeah, that’s it – I’m pretty happy, to be honest.”

Another team will get involved. We will get a pick in the early 20s

Cal has strong reasons to want to get to Adelaide which have just come to light recently.

Everyone knows he's worth a first rounder . Especially from a team in contention. They're giving him the contract of a first round trade.

They made the play to get him there so imo it's up to them to cough up something we can live with.

Is the general consensus that Kiddy shouldn’t have any long term issues with his knee? Seems just about the worst recovery from an ACL i can ever remember with the knee soreness followed by quads.

Scary to think how good a fully fit Coleman would be in our team with how it has developed since 2023.

Bingo. Throwing big coin on a five year deal to get a player interested to move & then try to lowball on the trade is very douchebaggy. We got to bring all our trades in & still kept our first round draft pick bullcrap chest beating nonsense.......

I enjoy watching our trade team do their work. Sure, we try our best to get our players to the club of their choice, but there comes a point where if there's too much pisstakery (if that's not a word, it should be) then it won't get done.

I expect we'll allow slightly unders on this trade, but it'll still be in the ball park. I assume it'll get done.
