Sounds promising that Bailey will re-sign and shows how good our cap management has been that we have no one being paid more than a million a season.

ZAC BAILEY

BRISBANE

It’s not really if the Lions sign restricted free agent Bailey, it’s when and for how much.
He’s keen to stay but needs to be rewarded and if the price is right over summer he’s prepared to re-sign.
But with clubs like Essendon prepared to hand over funny money how much would he sacrifice to sign up early?
The early indication is that while there is no official timeline on contract talks he’s not in any hurry to sign yet but loves the Lions and won’t be leaving given Brisbane knows it has to pay up.
The Lions’ brilliant cap management has allowed them to pay so many stars because they haven’t had to pay anyone much over a million bucks, with Hugh McCluggage’s seven-year deal signed in 2024 for about a million dollars a season.
They will come under pressure if they have to match bids of as much as $1.5 million for players like Bailey. So it’s not really about losing Bailey, it’s about how expensive he will be.
With players like Will Ashcroft recently extending past 2026 on big bucks the cap will be bulging if Bailey signs for top dollar.

LACHIE NEALE

BRISBANE

Neale needs only six games for 300 AFL games and while he turns 33 in May his form remains elite, as his Grand Final cameo showed.
The lesson of the Pies veterans is that you cannot undervalue them or rivals circle so the Lions will surely find the balance of tacking on another year or two onto his contract to keep him locked away while the flag window remains open.

Im back from my forum hiatus because an adelaide mod didnt like my opinion on ah chee. Bunch of snow flakes on this forum sometimes.

Never directly posit an opinion, simply allude to your opinion by asking circular questions of their opinions and shower them with likes if they are stupid enough to keep replying. Then just sit back and watch them work themselves into a massive meltdown. The same tactic works a treat on scammers too.

Will we trade for more points on draft night? I was just having a look and there doesn't seem to be a natural swap available with anyone for 17 or 23. Maybe North but it feels like their first two picks to the Suns for 15 is more likely. Maybe the Swans are interested, but it feels like those picks will likely come in anyway with matching by the Suns, so may not be much motivation to move up. There is no obvious (to me) deal to be done for our earlier pick/s.

I’ve been saying this for a long time.

I think we should wait until we know where the bid is going to come.
So we can get back in the draft as early as we can after the bid.
Would be nice to get a fairly highly rated key defender into the mix if possible, unlike others though, he doesn’t need to be 200cm tall. Around Paynes height would be fine imo.
Not sure what is available though?

What pick does the Annable pick come in at.
We could realistically grab him at 7 or later imo.
Weagles don't bid on him imo because of Allen Starc deal we did.
Dursma at 1
CTD or Robey at 2
Tigers pick 3 they take a player Weagles didn't at 3.
Then bid the 2 Suns academy lads at 4 and 5 then Harry Dean at 6 then perhaps Annable goes 7th or later.

Richmond will bid on all of the "yet to be bid" ones. So Pick 3/4/5 - one of them will be for Annable.

You dont think they will use there first on a player they actually want and hypothetically speaking avoid those player not being matched?
Any of the bids on top players - Dean, Annable, Uwland, & Patterson - will be matched by their respective clubs. The expectation from ESPN & Herald Sun in their first phantom drafts is that Richmond will bid on Uwland & Patterson with their picks.

Yeah that's possible too. But Richmond have the habit of going after academy for a while. So if it makes even the smallest of difference (like say Suns having to go on deficit next year) then Richmond will consider it to be a worthy cause to do the bidding early.

Richmond's list manager the Don Chipp of the AFL ... keeping the bastards honest!

Yes agree with all of the above I know all bids will be matched my point was will the Tigers use there first pick at 3 or there second pick at 4 the difference in points we will need is much different.
E.g Richmond take CTD or Robey at 3 then bid on in this order 2 x Suns which will be pick 4 and 5 then Harry Dean at 6 putting Annable at 7.
The points we need will be much different is what I was getting at.

Richmond might bid on both GC kids just to stick it up Dimma.
If they bid on Annabelle it would be because they rate him the next best.

Hoping Tigers bid on Dean before Annable could be on the cards as f#@k you for next season with them getting Walker who is in there academy but has already said he will go to the baggers

Dean might even go pick 3 actually.
Ruining Carlton's draft hand would outweigh Suns bid for Richmond.

Do the top players still get $.. Does anyone know when that drops to zero

As if you do bid on others and pushes your player out and no $
You need to Cotton On a way to replace it :)

Is your actual target a Tiger diehard and do they have a vengeful streak and are the confident they will recoup their lost 3-5K during their career ... if the answer is yes, yes, and yes then cry havoc and let loose the dog of war!

Now that it looks like Thredgold will go in the first round, I'm not sure there's a key defender worth taking this year that will be available to us. Last year's crop was better and next year's will probably be better too. While I previously thought we need a KPD prospect coming in this year to ensure we're prepared for when Gardiner and Andrews retire, now I think it's okay to wait a year or two, so we don't have to force it this year if we don't rate the talent.

2027 is the year that our academy has multiple promising KPP options (Boothey, Dobbie, Bickerton) and it may be worth ensuring that at least one of them has the space and opportunity to develop on our list. It doesn't hurt to have multiple tickets if you're trying to win the talent lottery, but there's also only so many young talls we'll be able to give VFL playing time to, so we shouldn't go overboard either. 4 mature KPDs and 2 developing at any one time is probably enough.

Andrews is 29 next season, Gardiner is 30 and ZZ is 20. For simplicity let's say every KPD plays their final season at age 33 and is either AFL ready at age 22 or won't make it. With these assumptions, we'll get 4 more years out of Gardiner, 5 more out of Andrews, and we can make the call on ZZ in 2 years. That means we'd have the space for 2 developing KPDs on the list from the 2025-27 drafts.

At the latest, we'd need a Gardiner replacement for 2030 and an Andrews replacement for 2031. If the replacements are at least 22 when they step up, and are drafted at 18, then they can be drafted as late as... 2026 and 2027. Excellent timing. So we don't absolutely need one in this draft.

Of course, that's a best case scenario. Maybe someone has a career ending injury, or someone retires earlier, or the players we draft need more time to develop than what I've assumed. But the point is, at this stage it isn't critical to draft a KPD this year.

I think you are right about North and the Suns being more attractive to both teams. Sydney’s 31 and 32 for our 23 would give us a points upgrade, but the Swans would need to really want a player available at 23 who trumps the two players they could get 8 spots later. Looks like 17 and 23 could be used to match Annable and we might get some of pick 23 back if the bid is not in the first 5.
