So just give up, be mediocre and just don't try to convince him by showing we have a future that compels him to stay.

Why should he not stay. Was reported to want to go home after his first contract but stayed.
Why are you so pessimistic about the Saints improving and showing NWM we are not just going to be also rans?

Surely you aren't comfortable with this defeatist attitude?
Because if we are paying TDK, whom by all reports on here is not as good as Marshall, 1.7. Then NAS wants 1.4 and rising, we will be heading towards maxing out our cap. Then imagine we can’t get anyone else to come due to having no cap space and are at best similar to this year. Let that sink in. NAS isn’t winning us games now so with essentially the same team next year how are we looking?
Defeatist is saying yes just pay Nas whatever he wants because we are shite anyway and won’t need the money. Let monkey boy Williams keep putting the rent up.

And here it is. The best player we have had since Riewoldt and some would let him walk.
FMD this supporter base is cooked AF.
If he has to leave, then we best be demanding first round picks, players and even a cut of the SA power grid.

For me I would want 1 top 5 pick, 1 top 10 pick plus a player paid for fully by either crows or port (Not going to happen I know, but I am but a poster)

There is only so much the club can do to get Nas to stay. If NAS wants that $1.5 mill plus then it is clear that winning a premiership isn’t high on his priority list. Particularly if he is using the TDK raid as a bargaining chip.

NAS should want the club doing what they can to add to the group if he wants to be in a winning team. There is a fair chance that the TDK stuff is scuttle but mind you.

Seems dediculous to continue to link the TDK and Aleer Pursuit with NAS’s contract. I would think that getting them onto our team helps sign NAS more than hinders it

It’s an extension of the argument
Only when you erroneously introduced it.

How two contracts for two players 15 years apart in totally different contexts can be an extension of the argument seems totally incongruous to me, but hey knock yourself out, if you think it is relevant.
Kane Taylor never left so NWM shouldn't. Same argument.

So you would not pay a premium to keep the best player in the league ( arguably) and let him go 'on principle'?
Was talking about usual industry contract dynamics .

Not relevant what I would do, as if it was and I had a say we wouldn’t be going after TDK.

Reckon a good starting point would be to simply pay NAS what he is worth. Independent of what anyone else has been offered or what anyone else is offering him.

Personally wouldn’t expect him to take less than what he is worth to stay but would not be overpaying him to stay either .

Realistically we could offer a premium and if he wants to go home it won’t matter .

Not about principal it is about managing your salary cap and paying players fairly. Unfortunately the minute you offer free agents the kind of money we have you make a rod for your own back .

Haven’t read what Bont has signed for other than for four years did they pay a premium , pay what he is worth or did he stay for less .

I mean, if you're Nas and you see the numbers being reported for TDK, you'd have to think you're worth at least as much to the club.

Yeah you want the players all buying in to help build a better list but when we are talking 500k a year for 7 years... You're basically asking Nas to pay the club $3.5 million to maybe, possibly, hopefully get good enough to potentially make finals/top 4.

Like it or not, we are moving into an era where more and more players are going to say "**** you, pay me!" and value their earnings over any sense of club loyalty.

This is where all the intangibles; MCG Crowds, primetime games, off field opportunities etc become so important to a clubs recruiting.

If we don't find another axis to start fighting on during the off-season we are going to be stuck with B Graders and mercenaries.

Can’t believe people are fussed what it costs to keep NAS. We have the largest amount of salary cap space ever recorded. If we lose him over money I’ll be so filthy. If we have to over pay who actually cares? Who cares if he doesn’t commit for more than 2 years?

He’s the best player we’ve had in the last however long you want to go back. You get him recommitted whatever amount of $ it takes. Im tipping he’s not going home if we are up the pointy end of the ladder. If we still suck in 2 years and he wants to leave.. then we get a haul and move on.

There is no fan base better at talking up potential talent like we are.

Dodson has played 0 AFL games. Anointing him as the next anything is stupid.

TDK is a proven ruck. He makes our current ruckman who has desires to leave expendable.

It isn’t hard to understand.

But why is replacing our current ruck for a similar player on twice the coin a priority? Marshall probably has 3 years of very good footy left, TDK probably has 6. If Dodson isn't looking great in a few years time then we could grab a solid ruck for a fraction of the cost of TDK. Marshall is contracted for another 2 years so he doesn't have to go anywhere if we don't want to replace him.

If we were talking about bringing in a 24 year old Max Gawn level player, I could at least accept that they would make us a better side. But TDK is no better than Marshall.

Has anyone mentioned what we could even possibly get in a trade for Nas if he leaves? What’s fair from port or crows?
Neither have the trade capital to give what is fair.

Neither have much at all draft pick wise to trade, so it would require them to move on a gun, and neither will want to do that.

He wants to go home eventually, can’t you read the leaf? He was home sick from day 1, only Wood and Hill helped him to settle, but long term the lad wants to go home.. no amount of money or convincing will make much difference. So with that in mind, do you still offer him $2 million a year for 2 years just to lose him anyway with the risk of injury etc. If he doesn’t want to be at the club, then go now, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, the club is bigger than any individual..
That's how it should be, but increasingly the tails are wagging the dog.
