We are getting Callahan LDU and TDK. Someone has to go and I believe NWM wants to go back to Adelaide.

Sorry all this was a bit of a pisstake. I don't know if we get one let alone three of them.

As for NAZ, one of two scenario's.

After the club leaked ( in my view) 12 mill over 7 for TDK

1) he and the club have an agreement already so the leak wasn't damaging

2) he is gone so the club has thrown the leak out there

Would be inconceivable to me that we would offer that money to an outside party when we have vital players such as NWM and Chito to secure.

I tend to think the Owens money wouldn't be too much. Average salary in the AFL in 2024 was about $460k, so I wouldn't be surprised if the four year offer for Owens was in the $2m range (for the 4 years total).

NWM would be another thing entirely - he is better performed and it is well established he has an inkling to return to SA.

You think we are getting them. Nothing more.

LDU won't happen. And we won't be letting NWM go just so we can achieve one or two of those trades.
I'm pretty sure he was having you on....

Finally on NWM it is worth pointing out that other than winning more games, we've done pretty much everything right if we wanted to keep him.
The optics of him leaving won't be be good.

"St Kilda sees another established player leave" makes a hard sell to a player we would want to recruit.

We do some funny things ..
-Playing Pou week in week out in the first year. (Was that to ‘keep him from SA sharks?)
-playing Crouch for Round One last year when he was clearly cooked. (Was that to trigger a clause in his payout contract?)
- Battle? Lord knows what happened there..but fair play to the club for snubbing him, it ain’t no good thang, and we just HAD to play him and earn a few late wins, even as he was playing his best games and raising his Hawthorn goodies salary every mark he took

I think it is just the weird things clubs must do to survive. And Lord knows we are up against it. I mean, who among Essendon, Carlton, Bulldogs, even Collingwood, is going to ‘ease off’ and allow the Gold Coast rocket ship to finally get a crack in the finals - the AFL lube coming out.

Might be an interesting trade period. If NWM decides to stay we might find it hard to get everyone in.
We’ll have 3 first round draft picks plus players like Clark etc

Callaghan + Aleer for 2 firsts and a second then TDK as a FA is doable if they agree

Look, we totally misplayed Battle as I feel a slightly better offer earlier in the year would have gotten him over the line.

But, specifically with NWM, I don't know what we could be doing differently. It will be an awful look if he does, but I'm not sure what more we can do other than offer him a salary completely out of whack with his position in the game right now.

Wilson played every week last year too. He had a better first year than Pou, but also some thin games.

Pretty obvious we did not take a step right with Battle in the last year, then the B&F thing... good grief.

Compensation wasn't fair in the end too. Pick 10 in the end, we couldn't even get the player we actually wanted because of the academy thing. Where are our academy prospects?

Free agency favours the strong teams and rips the heart out of the poorer teams.

Can we just go all out to keep NAS? A player we have developed and who is on the cusp of becoming elite.
Get on it, Saints.

The way I try and look at things so I'm not disappointed is by assuming all uncontacted players are leaving till the sign. Battle perfect example.

I really hope Nas plans on staying and signing long term but if he decides to leave I'm wanting a small fortune for him. Preferably a ready made young A grader who wants to come home to Vic or multiple top 10 picks.

I think if we leak 12mill over 7 years for an outside player without having him secure, you can be confident he is out the door.

I still reckon our ability to sign players will depend on our success this year. If we make an unexpected jump up the ladder then we'll be very attractive. If we're bottom 6 we're not getting an LDU.

I think I’m with you on the FreeA stuff, but for Battle, I don’t think it’s pretty obvious at all. What is the obvious thing to do in that scenario? What are we gonna do? Start paying off other coaches so they won’t poach? Mmm wait a sec, maybe that’s not a bad idea?

But Hawthorn, the coach, the media, the family barbecue and all the connections in business. What can we do? I think banning him from the B&F was a good bit of theatre actually. Shows how little clout we have . A big embarrassing but ? And who knows, maybe his team mates voted on that for all we know. He let them down that’s for sure.

Edit: we wanna beat Hawthorn this year..and in a crushing way.

OK, how did the academy players stop us getting the player we wanted?

I wonder if the Mitchells will keep up the best buddies thing for the duration.

I mean, the lack of current Saints players at his weddings or even liking the social media post speaks volume to that.

As Wilkie acknowledged in an interview the next day, it would have been extremely awkward for everyone if he was there.

Our game against the Hawks will be pretty spicy this year.

Our pick 9 for Leo Lombard was stopped by Gold Coast using their academy selection. Leo Lombard is a forward/mid fielder which is what we desperately need. We were then pushed back to pick 10 and took Alix Tauru
