Not sure how much Saints history you're across but uhhh... we're losers.

And we've managed that by playing safe. Drafting "good characters". Working to appease players vs changing the culture...

We sacked Lovett before his case went to trial.
We didn't recruit Ben Cousins.
We sacked Watters because the players didn't like him.
We didn't trade for Dusty because of his reputation.
We didn't draft Petracca, in part, because of his FIGJAM attitude.

The Saints recent history has very much been built on "playing it safe".

Given the way player acquisition works these days: NGA, FS, Big Clubs, Big Games... Teams like ours need to find every shortcut we can to try and climb back up the ladder.

If we brought in JUH and he ****ed up and got sacked, so be it. We wasted a year or two, gave up a list spot, and we're no better off.

If it works though, the upside is huge.

All that said; I think JUH ends up at the Swans or Lions and makes an amazing recovery to help them sit in the top 4 for another 5+ years.

I get the overall point but...

Lovett went from "good bloke threatening his gf in a car then beating her face raw" into accusation into grievance loss for us into many many court instances for there to be fire about how great a decision it was to get that man out of the AFL system cause Essendon are spineless flogs who need to be purged by fire if people actually gave a shit.

To follow this up, Ben Cousins, mr I shit gold let me just tear this shirt off, run away from cops, lie about me in rehab so I can piss off to the Tigers and remark in a rando bar about how they need standards. Just lookit moi and how I pissed it all away by being a straight addict.

You get Watters, he said she said and offended feelings.

Dusty was never really coming IMHO, as you say we're shit, that's what we are, but that also means that there'll always be ways to go forward as you just can't get any worse than our history. But you also need to consider; Tigers, good org, smart people a bit like the Dees in that when their people give a shit, it's all in and all pulling one way to build a lasting thing. Us, well we saw the footy first ticket first hand to know how that went. I believe we got the ex AFLPA president and ex game dev at commission guy after this cause we were that much in the shit.

Petracca v Paddy is a kneejerk instance, I wanted Brayshaw but Paddy was fine as man was going to be a 4+ goal forward for us, just you know, his head was made of tissue. So I can see why they did what they did even if it was the wrong choice for me.

By and large these are good ideas in that there's reasons to say you just don't go there or you can see "we need to replace Roo ZOMG" as a thing to comprehend for this to just not be playing it safe and more doing diligence.

Now, what we did with the picks and such, that is diabolical, and for mine JUH goes off the rail fully and he ends up as a TT at North about how such a talented guy pissed it all away.

I still retain if we win another cup, I am giving up footy as quest complete and time to go on mad bender for the rest of my existence about how I was there. This then utterly breaks the AFL as the overall narrative can't handle that, it just not a thing they actually comprehend. it's also for this reason I don't think we will, as we get in our own heads far too easily chasing that sort of dream.

The one that keeps failing to produce in Finals and is likely not to play in one this year ... you mean that Butters?
Yeah the Butters that won the AFL coaches award 23 and the AFL players most courageous award as well, along with 2 B&Fs. To go with the 2 AA jackets

Yeah pretty sure its the same guy

As much as a loose cannon as he was, it would have been amazing to get the Fevolution across from Carlton.

Him and the G-train in the forward line would have been party time.

No we don't? Heath and Dodson playing forward tells the story

We need someone to cover for King alongside Sharman and Owens
Caminiti as a forward, was a pre-season supplementary pick and Sharman was a mid season pick.
I'm pretty happy with both, but are you really likely to find someone significantly better with this sort of rookie pick?

I think Sharman is a B-grade forward when the rest of the team is working. His hands and set shot are lethal

Depends where the club sees Caminiti in the long-term. IMO he looks better as a defender but what would I know

We don't need someone significantly better. We just need someone who can come in and play a role, whether its a defender or forward. I'm favouring a forward because we have Tauru & Barrat coming through

Just on Bergman it really doesn't matter if he can become a mid or not, we need backs as much as mids now he would instantly improve us (enormously), the question is cost and how you avoid giving up a first for him.

I was just having a look at the Coates League games on the weekend. A kid who I was surprised didnt get a rookie spot at last years draft is playing as a 19yo and having a pretty good year. Gabriel Stumpf 196cms plays as a mobile key forward, he might be one worth looking at in the MSD is we open a list spot.
