To me that "hanger" Charlie took where he barely got off the ground shows that he is a long way from 100% - we probably need to book him in for whatever surgery he needs now and let him have a full pre-season.
He's just come off three surgeries this off season. Why does he need another surgery?

Let’s not overstate Harry McKay’s absence, it wouldn’t leave an unfillable gap.

Statistically, our forward line ranks among the league’s worst for converting inside 50s into scores.

The McKay/Curnow combination has rarely delivered consistent results, and the modern game demands a more diverse set of scoring options rather than relying on two $1M+ key forwards.

In reality, someone like Tim Membrey, who was available as a delisted free agent, would have offered Carlton a greater output in 2025.
We are a mid table side missing 6 1/2 of our 7 best forwards.

Fit Curnow, McKay, Cottrell, Kemp, Smith, Hollands are in our best 22. Traded out Owies and Kennedy who were main stays in our forward line the last 3 years.

There are many reasons we are so bad and this is one of them.

Florent would be a short term upgrade for sure, but I am not convinced long term that he is a better option than our developing half back/wing options.

I don’t believe our salary cap situation justifies an investment there over patience and development. I am on board for a small forward option if a viable one could be shaken loose. We have too many solid workers and nit enough x-factor in that part of the ground.
Our developing half back/wing options are

Wilson
Ollie
Binns
Lucas
Carroll
Cowan
Charleson

Florent is a proven talent that can play at the level from day 1. Half of those players are likely multiple years away from being consistent performers and Docherty, Saad and Newman are far closer the the end than they all are to being developed senior AFL players.

On a moderate contract and little in cost in terms of trade capital I'm not sure how anyone could pass up Florent if the Swans are happy to deal him in the position we're in.

Trade targets
Adelaide

We need a running half back, small forward , X factor forward, wingman, key defender.
The list above offers them and most will be cheap.

The don’t touch list at carlton
Cripps
Mckay
Curnow
Walsh
Weitering

Next tier
Cerra
Hewett
Sadd

Next teir
Silvagni
TDK but I believe he will go which we will get a good draft pick and open up massive salary cap. To bring trade targets as above.

Riley Obrien, Liam Ryan , Malcom Rosa’s , Leek , miles Bergman, Lloyd and florent would be good starting base

I’d be happy to trade, delist or move on anyone not in the above don’t touch list
Ah! The old, I want all these players, but don’t want to give anything for them trick!

I really hope we go aggressive with the list turnover at the end of the year.

We’ve got at least 6 players earning A-Grade money, but no one on the list is playing constant A-Grade football, this season.

A-Grade ?
B-Grade - Hewett, Cerra, TDK, Weitering, Haynes, Silvagni
C-Grade - Hollands (been good, disposal holding him back), Williams (injuries) Cripps, Walsh, Saad, McKay, McGovern, Curnow, Cottrell, Fogarty, Docherty (turnovers and fumbles), Lord, Young
D-Grade - Motlop, Durdin, Fantasia, Acres, Binns, Pittonet, Boyd, Carroll (needs development) Evans, Cincotta

I thought you were harsh on the b- graders until I saw who you had in your c-graders 😂😂

I firmly believe that our list has sufficient talent to be top 4 - the core of our list from 2023 that made the prelim is essentially still there and a huge chunk of our those players from 2023 would have been expected to improve over the past 2 seasons. Injuries have played a part but the coaching (game plan, ability to get the best out of players) has been abysmal.

Change is desperately needed and although this will happen, I have zero confidence in the ability of our coaching staff to get the best out of the list the 2026 season - As it stands, I would expect 2026 to be another wasted season (we won't be seriously contending for a flag) - there will be a new set of assistants to settle in, the head coach will either be someone who has failed to consistently get the best out of the team for 4 years, or someone new that will want to implement their own gameplan/evolve the list.

This off-season will essentially be our last opportunity in a while to load up on talent given walker next year and Tassie concessions in the years after. Given the above, list changes for this off-season SHOULD be with a view to being contenders from 2027 onwards ie 2 years down the track.

For mine this would mean trying to bring in additional talent this offseason through the following.
  • TDK - let go as RFA to get 1st round pick to backfill (expecting this will end be a top 5 pick)
  • Zak williams - Trade for younger player in position of need (small forward/ruck) or a mid-20s pick, pay part salary if we need to get something of value. If we get a mid-20s pick -> package up with future 1st round to get an additional first round pick if possible
  • Charlie/Mckay - I would seriously consider moving one of them one if we could get something highly valuable in return (prefer to keep McKay due to flexibility upfield - particularly with TDK moved on). Could we somehow turn Curnow into Reid or a gun young mid from another team (north?). Would not be interested in draft picks unless it nets a top 5 (+another pick of value)
Walsh - absolutely keep unless we have zero confidence in his body/he feels he needs a fresh start to get his body right

I'd give you 100,000 reasons why
That only gives us an edge over other bad clubs (St Kilda etc).

If Collingwood and Carlton are chasing the same player, for the same amount of money, it surely wouldn't be surprising to see where they ended up.

Of that 7, there is only 1 player who has shown himself to be AFL quality, a very risky move to base any recruiting decisions based on the rest of list.

There lies the truth & a change in coach will not take that list to finals.
The 2023 list was substantially different on the flanks: Martin, Cunningham and a fit Cottrel, Docherty, better walsh

Maybe Voss knows about Walsh's limitations because of his back and is trying to fit him into the team in a role that doesn't put too much stress on Walsh's dodgy back.
Or perhaps Walsh knows the limitations of his back and doesn't think he needs that approach, which he believes is in fact hindering himself and the team. Based on Voss track record with injured players, and Russell's comments about the coaches approach to injured players, I'm not convinced that's Voss gameplan at all.

This is a genuine watch for me for a number of reasons

1. Walsh hasn't been happy for a while and discussed a trade end of last year
2. Wright will want to refresh list and knows he needs capital to do it
3. Current list needs changes simialr to what he did a Pies
4. Wright will want SC room to keep adding players over next 5 plus years
5. Both in prime and can be traded for good deals. Sell high
6. Both roles can be covered in a well structured side

Personally, I believe Wright will let TDK go and look to trade one more player from Walsh, McKay and Curnow

That gives us some picks which I believe we will use to bring in players we need that have run and better skills. It will also give us more room in SC to bring in players over next few years

Just my take

After reading that and the Whateley side article involving comment from Buddy I'm firmly of the belief that Cripps is absolutely backing the coach and by doing that is pointing the finger directly at the playing group as the root cause of a lack of success. And to that end he is essentially acknowledging the list is not good enough because the line "we just need to be better for longer" has never really been endorsed and adhered to by the players.

With numerous people questioning the quality of the playing group including comments like "can't run" (and don't read that as unfit, it just means a lot of our players just can't actually get up and back as much as is required. Fact is supremely fit doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be a great repeat runner), ordinary skills, poor decision making, unbalanced player profile etc I'm expecting Wright to have a good hard look at the list.

He may not have any time for Voss and the assistants and footy dept all need a look too but for me the playing list needs a massive clean up.
