So looking at this through my crack at current best 21 with the list:

FB: Robertson Cordner
HB: Pound Peterson Vickers
C: Hill Sherar Finn
HF: Vescio C.Moody Brown
FF: Austin Bohanna

R: B.Moody Guerin A.McKay

Int: Skepper (mid), Fitzpatrick (fwd), Goss (mid), Reidy (mid/fwd?), Hendrie (def)

EMG: Velardo, Good, Keck

Depth: Read, Fitzgerald, O'Connell, Duursma

I'm really happy with the state of the list in terms of talent level, just want to add more elite talent from the perspective of both athleticism/speed and skill level. Pick 5 is all we have to really grab at that this year, but with the talent pool becoming national our chances go way up.

Pick 5 and Sophie McKay who is a young gun in her own right.

Good is our best ruck currently. BMoody needs to lift. CMoody is the depth.

I'm almost calling time on Peterson with her injuries. I'd play Fitzgerald at CHB. Vescio is just about done too. Maybe she gets a chance early with a new look forward line. I'm not playing 3 talls in a 5 woman forward line however.

Our first 2 draftees will play from the outset IMO.

Tend to agree, but Peterson has to be given first crack at CHB unless her body lets her down. Good third in the B&F isn't likely to be out of the side and I agree Celine Moody is clearly third cab off the rank at the moment. I think Bohanna is a great get for us especially at the price and fills a big need.

I think Breann hit the gym too hard and then hurt her continuity through the season with her forward minutes. Very much like watching what happened with TDK prior to 2024, who I'm glad helped return the ruck role to its fullest potential in the modern game (because he was going to be a mediocre ruck otherwise).

If you give Breann first crack at ruck, then Celine becomes the likely better forward choice, and I think playing a roaming CHF gives her freedom to just work on fundamentals without feeling the need to score with every other kick. We need a lot more running and zippier ball movement, and perhaps that will open up things a bit for her.

I really don't like the situation we have with the 3 of them, and I loathe to see a side where they all play.

RE: draftees, you're probably right though I'm having a hard time seeing a good spot for Sophie until she irons out her kicking, but it will be amazing to see someone with Andy's running gait and power in a Carlton jumper.

I'd go with a forward line up like this:

Brown Austin Fitzpatrick
Bohanna Vescio

I'd rotate Breann and Good in the ruck, or down the line leading talls.

You can't argue with Good's season. She is bigger and stronger than Moody at the moment. Celine just doesn't get to enough contests.

Neither of them are fast enough.

Breann and Good. Breann is quick in a straight line when playing lighter than she did last year.

Neither seem to be near the level of the rucks at the better clubs. The level has improved so much as the grass roots competitions have improved. We will need to invest in a young ruck sooner or later.

CARLTON midfielders Dayna Finn and Lily Goss alongside defender Ciara Fitzgerald have signed a contract extension, keeping them in the Navy Blue until at least the end of 2026.

Pound Cordner
Field Sholz Peterson

Hill Guerin Vickers
B Moody A McKay Sherar

Fitzpatrick Austin Skepper
Bohanna Vescio

Int: Good Robertson Duursma S McKay

Emergencies from: Finn Fitzgerald Brown Keck Goss Hendrie Velardo C Moody

Getting some depth, but still heaps of development and experience needed. Th3 balance is starting to show.

I think Pound has to be on shaky ground too. Looked like a bit of a liability in the prelim. I've loved her guts and determination over the journey but she's another that is slowing down.

Not sure of contract tenure.

Contracted until 2026.

With the addition of L Bella from Gold Coast. We now have 5 rucks on the list.
I realise that Breann H will play forward more however, Jess, Madeline and Maddison all will be looking for game time, which ones fall by the wayside as we would not recruit Lauren if not expecting her to play next season.
Anyone in the know on AFLW list managment goings on?

Maddie Hendrie is now genuine KPD.

Jess Good reportedly fielding offers. She has been a great competitor, but has never been quick, and time catching up. Possibly departs with a huge thank you from the group and supporters.

Unless list spots are at a massive premium, likely Torpey stays around as “insurance”. Did a decent job when needed mid year.

Not sure how much “gas is in the tank” for “Moods” post marriage. Forward/ruck seems her go moving forward

Torpey could easily transition to defence, has plenty of athleticism.

I enjoy watching the AFLW, but am not across the list like some others from here.

I see a number of comments that maybe AFL should allow AFLW teams to have something like 2 extra list spots, and maybe having some CatB in AFLW could be a good thing. I get the pros for this argument, but what would be the cons? Maybe stronger clubs getting stronger?

Also, given our list changes so far, is someone able to reflect overall on what we might have 'lost' in terms of departing players, and 'gained' in terms of incoming players to date, and how this may improve the team (maybe also in comparisonto other teams - will we be more competitive against the likes of Brisbane or NM)?

I don't see why this would necessarily follow. For example, we'd probably be able to retain Kerryn Peterson in this scenario, and I don't think that would weaken our team or club.

Personally, I feel we've lost a ready-made replacement for Bohanna with Mia having departed, but at the same time that gained us a player who looks like a genuine walk up start as a mid/forward of impressive quality.

But as far as improvement in the team goes, that's a tough one. We can't know if - or to what extent - we can expect further improvement from Siofra O'Connell or Aisling Reidy. I mean, who could have anticipated the dominant force that Dayna became this year, or the amazing way that Ronnie recovered from her ACL? Both Siofra and Aisling debuted this year, so if they have even half the improvement trajectory of Dayna, then their contribution could help a lot.

We've also managed to keep our original first pick in the draft, with about 5 GC Academy players coming in this year. And with GC loading up on late first/early second round picks, they seem to expect 1st round bids for all of them. That should mean we end up with about the 10th best available player. Given what we've seen from Poppy and Soph this year, it's quite possible that such a pick could get us a player who can have an almost immediate impact.

Adding a mobile and impressive tap ruck, along with two additional quality midfielders, should improve our ability out of stoppage - an area of the team that was already quite a strength. Losing that battle in the prelim was definitely a factor in the result. So you'd expect improvement there.

And of course, injuries can have such a huge impact in AFLW. I don't think we should expect the same amazing run that we had this year. So that's likely to be some sort of factor as well.

All in all, I think the team will improve, and I think we'll be closer to the likes of Brisbane. But I wouldn't expect us to be getting close to North (just like the rest of the competition) until they start a natural decline through the loss of some of their important, but aging players. And who knows what GC will be like next year? When you look at who they were willing to let go in order to make way for their academy selections, they must be expecting a lot from them. We already know that Sunny is destined for good - maybe even great - things and there's 4 more of them! So GC could really come out swinging.

OK Coona’s list assessment incoming.

We have a top notch team which still has plenty of room for natural improvement.

We have lost arguably little.
Kez was a tough call which will probably be vindicated. We have one of the better defences in the competition. Cordner, Hendrie and Velardo is a tight unit of talls. Kez has been an AFLW great, but the game is increasing in speed, with that being her greatest weakness. While Cordner is, on paper, getting on, I suspect she has plenty of hunger and remains fit and healthy. (Just quietly, I suspect Irish recruit Siofra O’Connell will in time elevate as a genuine KPD prospect) of course we have Poppy who can revert to the backline if required.

Skepper is very talented, but very disappointing. Her body is hardly up to standard, having beefed up considerably since moving to the big smoke. She certainly has great potential, but seems to lack the “want” to commit to the program.

Austin is clearly a best 21 player when right, but her loss enabled us the draft capital to grab Boileau, a very impressive mid/forward. Realistically Austin remains behind Bohanna, Poppy, Harrington and even Sophie as tall targets. The other Irish in Reidy has shown some promise forward too. Mia will get much more opportunity with the Demons.

Tarni Brown failed to get on the park in two seasons with us.

Wood and Brewer didn’t get the chance to impact as top up players. Torpey was quite impressive when called upon to ruck in the absence of Good, but with Bella joining the ruck options, she has moved on for opportunity.

Celine Moody now officially off the list after retiring post list lodgement.

Unsighted Irish girl Maria Cannon has fallen out due to the numbers game. I don’t have any info how she was tracking, but after being let go after one season when coming half way around the world, I would not be amazed if she is redrafted with our second pick.

Putting together a best 21 with our retained 2025 players, we have a very strong line up.
Back: Velardo and Hendrie
Half back: Fitzgerald, Cordner, Vescio
Centre: Finn, Abbie McKay, Fitzpatrick
Foll: Harrington, Hill, Goss
Half fwd: Sherar, Scholz, Guerin
Forward: Bohanna and Sophie McKay
Interchange: Duursma, Pound, Vickers, Good, Keck.
Remainder: O’Connell, Reidy, Robertson, Field.

Every player has seen senior action and there is plenty of development to come for the four “depth” options.

Via trade we have added
Lauren Bella who is a proven ruck and the tallest on our list (easily) now. She is superior to both Harrington and Good at ball ups and will almost certain be our first ruck. (Harrington ahead in general play around the ground, but likely to play more forward)

Claudia Whitfort was a Gold Coast B&F and runner up in the AFLW award in the same year, which potentially makes her our highest ranked player at the peak of her powers. Plays midfield and forward with pace and burst.

Brooke Boileau is another very highly rated and athletic mid/forward, with her highlights reel showing her to be a “tackling machine” as well as a play maker.

All three of our trades are walk up starts in our best team, picking who goes out to make room won’t be an easy task.

There is a decent gap from the North Melbourne juggernaut to the rest of the teams, but we are shaping as the team to lead the chase with plenty of upside. We now have an exceptionally deep group of midfield options for Bucky to make in to a workable combination.

Our draft picks will be interesting, we do not have a glaring weakness, so will surely be taking “best available”.

Thanks to both OldBlueFan and Coona Blue for your insights. Much appreciated.
You're welcome Rev, but Coona Blues did a much better job than me, very well put together, and I pretty much agree with everything they've said! :thumbsu:
