I think I've said this before but Freo and Melbourne did talk about Pickett last year and Melbourne said they will deal him but need a chance to line up replacement.

They can't just dump millions of dollars from their commitment to cap spend.

For what it's worth. I think Melbourne will see the back of Petracca and Oliver then offer Pickett nearly 2m a season to extend for a couple of years with that money.

I see that the general consensus is that Walters and Fyfe are finished at the end of the year. Whilst I agree that Fyfe will likely leave and give that body the rest it deserves I am not so sure on Walters. I think he would love to play some games with Bolton, Narkle and Duds and they would love to play with him. If he can get over the current injury don’t be surprised if he fronts again, he is the best trainer at the club, I am not sure that he sees his career as finished. Seems there are plenty of other options to delist at season end.
In the preseason against Melbourne he was pretty excited, creating a lot of scoring opportunities and have an understanding with the other First Nations players.

Let’s see how he recovers from his injuries.

Listening to Duffield today.

Concerns about Erasmus defensive work, this is what is keeping him.

To the extent this is true (and I think there's a decent extent), I'd wonder 2 things:
  • Is the primary concern defense at stoppage (which is what Craig spoke about there) or defending the ground? The "8 defenders" on Friday (tho Wagner played wing primarily) was a strange look, but it did the job.
  • Is it fixable? You watch Brodie and see he's 1 and done effort wise in the WAFL, but Ras at WAFL level is putting in a shift at stoppage defensively. Stoppages it feels like at AFL level he can get caught flat footed and that could be the lack of burst. Or some level of inexperience/not "reading" the game. But around the ground you'd think he'd be better at with the 2km time trial stuff and how good he is at providing an option in offensive chains. At AFL level though, it's low TOG and you see incidents like him getting burnt by Bice. I wonder if for AFL level he has the right "type" of stamina: a yo-yo test is probably more indicative of what AFL stamina looks like than a 2km time trial.

My guess is defensive running, nothing to do with stoppages themselves. At WALF level you often notice he gets a reasonable number of uncontested possessions by pushing forward from back half stoppages thus being free to be an option in forward chain. Maybe he's not doing the opposite to their satisfaction. Couldn't say really: The former you can see on tv (cause he gets the ball), whereas the absence of something you really need to be at the ground.

We don't have an explosive mid, who bursts out of a stoppage. I am bit surprised Bolton is not on the list.

Bolton maybe doesn't have the minimum 20 collects? I don't see him anywhere on the graphic.

Who is partially hidden behind Dangerfield and near Harley Reid? Is that Johnson? Maybe he could give us some burst.

And is it JOM near the bottom corner with only the top of his head showing?

The one I find hilarious is Sidebottom. Slow, not that big, yet he's up there for explosion. Crazy season he is having at his age.

I'm just going to put it out there, given there is some family here (Ugle's) and it'd be a change of friendship circles, would ya do it, would you make a run at JUH if it basically costs nothing bar one year (next year) of an overblown contract

Sure, pee in the cup. Submit the hair sample willingly.

If it's all clear, go for it. If it's not, then nobody finds out.

Geez he’s a talent but you’d have to get him cheap trade wise because he might go out the other door cheap.
But is he worth the risk at what he could potentially do to 4-5 years of culture building?
Tough one but if it’s just attitude, partying & some basic recreational drugs he’s dealing with then I’d have a crack at our culture & change of state working. Could be a reverse Hogan situation.
If it’s something more sinister he’s in too where we have to help in through it to get any value then wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

We haven't had a good history in helping out troubled types. McCarthy, Hogan, Sylvia, Bennell, Josh Simpson, Shane Yarran, Lobb ect. Geelong seem to fair a lot better than us at this.

Literally the only example of us turning someone around in the last 10 years I can think of is Sonny Walters - and I reckon that was overblown by Lyon anyway.

It's actually a pretty depressing thought to realise how many players have died young after being listed at Freo. I'm not attributing any blame to Freo at all, just stating that the club might not be the optimal mental rehab centre for talented young footballers.

The issue is the WA media. They leave no stone unturned looking for a Freo player to step out of line and put them on the back page. I highly doubt anything is going to change in that department so any trouble makers would soon get found out if they didn't get reformed very quickly.

Hogan basically got to go to Sydney and become invisible while he adjusted.

At best you probably get Jake Stringer value out of him , lazy poorly disciplined players are 10/1 to turn into solid selfless players who maximise their talent , worth it for all the hassle …. I don’t think so

People only ever seem to remember the success stories in these situations….. not the dozens and dozens of reclamation projects gone wrong

Hard to say without an example, but its feels like that’s shifted a bit.
Theres better representation for freo now and that mudslinging would get a lot of push back.
Especially if they went after an indigenous lad who’s cited mental health issues.

I probably wouldn’t bet on it tho
