Geelong trade for a lot players that are out of contract, they seem to do ok at the trade table. Compare what we paid for Shai Bolton, with what the cats paid for Bailey Smith.
Not disagreeing entirely but TBF Smith had been out for a year with an ACL hadn't he? There is also a bit of a DH factor with smith.

For what it's worth I think Melbourne fanning the Jackson stuff is primarily aimed at retaining Pickett: "Sorry Kossie they won't deal" etc. If Jackson actually shakes out of it it's a surprising bonus. Remember those guys are in a lot of trouble and apparently are going to stop at nothing to keep their jobs.

Still holding out hope it's a ploy to get a contract extension and payrise.

It's possible but I do genuinely think this has all come from Jackson telling Gawn back in February that he'd be open to coming back to Melbourne cos of all the family stuff. Doesn't mean we won't sort out a contract extension with him though

lol that ship has sailed. maybe that’s what his old manager wanted. but the afl article came out saying his preference was a four year deal and next thing he changes managers and the rumours blow up again and with a lot more strength behind them apparently
Not quite, the rumours blew up as he was changing managers. Whose to say that wasnt Dougal blowing it up again out of spite?

Why would the Eagles take Sellwood on a 6 month deal? I'll admit I don't watch Peel as closely as many of you, but it makes no sense to me. They should be prioritising getting games into Allan who's hardly played

It's worth noting that we're now getting multiple journos of actual repute linking the Darcy and Jackson situations together. Jackson's personal situation is well-known, but that aspect creates an extra wrinkle. The combo's worked well in the past: the only issue being Darcy not staying on the park.

Voss' emergence could be another wildcard here, but with Darcy and Jackson signed long-term, it feels like at least 1 of the following needs to happen for the Darcy-Jackson situation to change:
  1. Darcy's permanently cooked. Either can't stay on the park, can't ever find his way back to 2021-23 Darcy who could both dominate in the ruck and clunk a mark, or both.
  2. Jackson develops the tank to play extended runs of games in the ruck. So far inconclusive.
  3. One or both say "this town ain't big enough for the both of us". You could tell them we're keeping both, but that sort of situation can fester long-term.

I wouldn't be worried about Murphy Reid extending just yet, only four players from the last forty top twenty picks have extended.

2023 pick #7 - Caleb Windsor
2023 pick #9 - Ethan Read
2023 pick #10 - Nate Caddy (reported)
2023 pick #13 - Koltyn Tholstrup

Really? I mean he's a solid enough foot soldier, but would rather all 4 or 5 of our NGA'S on the list than Sellwood.
I'm convinced he could be a very good 100 game player and if any of the NGA's not named Whan do that, we are doing pretty well. I'd probably plan to move on one of the too many talls we have for him

think it was more so to do with disgruntled family/former friends trying to break into his home in the days prior
I knew you had something to share with the group.

Freo can pay for a security guard for all I care, the bloke is not getting traded

At number one? Is he the best player available to them?
Don't think we'll have a pick anyway so it's irrelevant.

I'd say Sellwood is 50/50 to get selected anyway but probably gets an opportunity by the start of next season. There's been guys overlooked in the MSD and then selected in the National Draft - wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

How many players request a trade to Victoria compared to WA?

We'd be trading in about one player every five years if we only targeted out of contract players. That's NEVER winning us a flag.

Not convinced given what was traded for Kelly, Baker and Jackson by WA teams that contract status is the real issue.

Geelong haven't only targeted uncontracted players either.

Has there been a big name they've t4ade for that's in contract?

Duds has a two year extension

“DOCKER TO LAND NEW DEAL

ISAIAH Dudley didn't have an AFL contract until February, but now Fremantle has rewarded the mature-age recruit with a two-year extension.

The Dockers are finalising a deal that will tie Dudley to the club until the end of 2027, following a surprise rise out of the SANFL.

Fremantle invited the small forward to trial for a spot on the rookie list in December, before signing him late in the pre-season supplemental selection period ahead of the game against the Indigenous All Stars.”

Ah, that it explains who the cheers where for at training today. Don’t be surprised if there is one or two others, probably announced over the bye.
