Out of Jackson, Voss, and Darcy, who is the best forward and who is the best ruck?

I think Jackson is the best ruck, and Voss is the best forward. I am not that concerned with how Voss goes in the 20-30% of the game he spends in the ruck. He is more than serviceable in that area.

I don't believe the current best 22 is the best team we could pick, so I am going to ignore that. I think if JL could replace Darcy with a gun small forward he would.

Would you hypothetically replace Sean Darcy with Darcy Jones? Would it improve our 22?

Happy to agree to disagree.
On current fitness, Jackson is the best ruck of the 3, if Darcy gets back to what he was in 2024 (let alone anywhere close to his Doig season) then he is still a superior pure ruckman.

Where Jackson excels is at ground level and around the ground he moves better than most ruckman, you see him in a handball chain and you don't feel anxious he is about to give up a holding the ball free kick.

Our current best twenty two has all of our first choice rucks and the two players who are the backup for it, with one of them being the overlap. We have to have either a tall forward who can slide in and replace Jackson or Voss forward or directly replace Jackson or Darcy in the ruck... or both.

We don't have depth in either position.
Depth is only one possible solution. We also have some structural flexibility, and I would like to see it used more.
  • Darcy and Jackson just had a really good game but their selection should have a horses for courses element to it.
  • he has been injured heaps and may have done his long-term future some damage as a result, but bringing in Sturt and rolling out a smaller forward line would be a great option depending on the opposition and other factors.

Next year, hopefully both Bolton and Dudley are fully fit and Bolton replaces a mid, Dudley slides in forward.

Sean Darcy is a better ruck than Jackson. Jackson is a forward than Voss.

Voss is asking for us to lose a clearance in the ruck. He will contest it, but he isn't a ruck. Clearances against cost games.

We aren't even one game removed from doggas midfield efforts against gc and everyone seems to have forgotten already

He was elite as a midfielder last game, I am 100% keeping that going to let him build.

Imagine a scenario where Jackson in the mids pushes forward and takes a midfielder with him, oh boy that is dangerous, it would be like when Fyfe took Neale to the square except this is Jackson against most mids

Ideally you bring in the best mature ager from 2nd tier comp.

I don't see much point keeping Reidy, as you don't want him to play.
Don't think a cheap trade or DFA is out of the question tbh.

As for names I really have no idea at this stage. The TDK, Draper, Cameron and Darcy decisions will be critical to how many rucks move. It sounds like any of these guys moving probably has a domino effect in that the current no.1 ruck in the teams those guys move to likely request a trade as well. I think it'll trickle down even further so that we see genuine depth rucks become 3rd or 4th option at their current club - they're the types you could offer long term job security (2-3 years) and trade in for a junk selection.

On the positive side, the additional cap space allows Freo to provide a more lucrative contract to Starcevic or even to heavily front load it and allow for more cap space in future years.

Starc is basically unrecruitable unfortunately

We ended up dodging Angus Brayshaw who we went hard for in a similar position, Starc has had just as many concussions

Any chance of bringing Curtin back before he really pops. He looks a great size and moves well. He will only get more expensive from here. Playing on the wing tonight and looks good, I’m sure we could fit him in somewhere.
Probably too late already

Still hasn’t re-signed though so maybe if we were willing to pay over the top of the Crows offer

He's a head knock away from retirement unfortunately.

Darcy is not a better ruck then Jackson (at least not anymore) and Jackson is not a better forward then Voss, Jackson is much better on-ball.

We were +11 clearances vs GWS and +5 clearances vs Port when we had Jackson/Voss, we brought Darcy back in and went -7 clearances vs Gold Coast, so I’m not sure where you are getting your numbers from but you are wrong.

The more I think of the Kozzy deal the more wild it gets

They have done the complete opposite of what I'd call common sense list management (and what we are doing)

They gave overs ($$) to stay compared to the deal offered by us AND they gave extra years compared to the deal.

Ending up in them giving Massive money AND Massive Security.

We give our players great security in the form of long contracts but in turn they receive less money, give and get.

Dees have given in both areas (and quite generously), its just a shocking contract for the club and I'm bloody glad we aren't doing those kind of things anymore.

Personally I think Melbourne have trades they are trying to get done for both of Trac and Oliver.
If they pull off either one of those trades and dump the whole salary to the accepting team, then the Pickett deal may look a little more affordable for them, especially if Pickett has agreed for the deal to be largely back loaded.

That said, my gentle observation would be that while these mega long term signings (often back loaded) seem to be a new trend, so too does the (amazingly coincidental) parallel trend of said long term signed players suddenly having "homesickness" or "family issues" until their deals are renegotiated to pay them more up front instead of big paydays in year 8 and 9.

If we achieved nothing else except lock in Jackson at Freo and force the price and contract length for Pickett to stay at Melbourne up, I think this is a decent outcome, especially if we can keep all of Voss, Duds, Reid and Ras with the cash we save from not having over paid for Koz. Koz is a great player, but there is only ever one of him. Spread the resources around means you spread the injury and other risks.

I mean who else are they going to pay going foward.

Gawn 33, May 33. Petracca, Langdon, Salem 29. Oliver 27 and on the glass barbeque.

There's a lot of cap coming off the next few years.

It locks in their best player under 29ish and they can work around that going forward.

I think for Melbourne this is probably the ideal but I think for Kossie he is probably going to be stuck in a team that isn't quite rebuilding and isn't quite contending for the next 4 years or so.

I feel like we have moved Freddie into the Sturt / medium role at times to good effect. We definitely seem top heavy by one tall with our current side unless we are not giving a tall as much game time or using Jackson as a mid/winger. Puts more pressure on our runners though so I think we need to adjust it again soon maybe by resting Darcy against Essendon.

At their list stage they should be using that money to lure emerging young players to the club rather than paying out a generational high contract. They are dangerously close to WC not so long ago, and I struggle to see them pulling off a Cats/Pies style list management scenario.

Not interested in running it back and adding more youth to already inexperienced team on average.
Use the picks and get a ready made

This guy fills a lot of gaps for us.
Can go wing or HB.
Also attacks the goals something else we’re we always short on.

Martin isn't going anywhere, all he talks about is repaying the faith that Essendon showed him by picking him up

Nobody wanted him, Essendon are going to pay him well and he enjoys it over there
