The local players Gold Coast got aren't too much less than what you'd expect from Tasmania in a typical 2-3 years tbh. Last year was a bit of a one off.

I'm not really talking about just the players though. I have said it before, it takes a club to win a flag, from the president to the boot studder. Obviously you'll never win one if your list is crap, but a brilliant list likely won't do it if the club isn't a winner at all levels.

The value of Alex Pearce to Tasmania is in his leadership and professionalism. Half a squad of kids packed out with some mercenaries will need a leader who embodies the spirit of the club and he very much would love to represent his state.

I do get your point though. There seems to be a few well recognised and probably quite good operators with Tasmanian links due to them being a historic football state that always produced players and/or other footy people. Some of those are already signing up.

I wouldn't have thought Peace would be going to the Tassie team unless he's pretty much finished as a top level player. He turns 33 in their first season. Dean Brogan areas. In fact weren't all their signings like that washed up? They didn't get anyone in their prime. Smart and Reecetober were still early in their careers, the rest were all 30 plus. I don't think the Devils are going to be shelling out good deals for your 'Establishing Standards' style players. I don't see them giving out big contracts to older players still playing good footy either. That money would be better invested in players they will get an extended return from.

If he is still playing good footy he'll be staying as I don't feel the lure of Tasmania would be enough to offset getting flogged every week for similar money.

I think there’s a few people a little delusional in thinking we will be getting anything meaningful in terms of compensation for Alex Pearce if he were to indeed head to Tasmania to play for them in the 2028 AFL season.

• he was born on 9th June 1995. He will be turning 33 in the first season of the Tassie Devils.
• there absolutely no guarantee that Tasmania is actually even in the league for Round 1 in 2028. Certainly at this stage it’s unlikely a new stadium would be complete by then. I would say there’s significant uncertainty now that this team will actually be playing AFL in 2028. Could well be 2029 or even 2030.
• Alex Pearce, whilst a fine player is not a top level A-grader that’s a multiple AA.
• the AFL aren’t giving Fremantle of all teams, a lucrative compensation bounty for losing a 33year old backman with a sketchy injury history.
• there is actually no real evidence Pearce even want at play for Tas, apart from speculation because he’s from there. One would imagine he’s pretty settled in Perth.

All up, I’ll be surprised if he does play for Tas. And I’ll be flabbergasted if we received anything other than a token 3rd round pick for him as compo, in the event that he does. We’d most likely get nothing.

I actually think there’s a much greater chance someone like Young or Serong is prised out of freo as an elite 26/27 year old with a $2m a year salary to be the face of this new club. We’d get compo then obviously but we would be losing an elite player.

The reality is the AFL want big names to go to Tas to kickstart this team and they are gonna have a warchest with big big $$$ in it to raid established clubs.

We're third last, which IMO is a step in the right direction.

It's good not to shed experience for the first time in a long time.

This year we may struggle as players like Fyfe, Walters, O'Meara, Aish play less football in the best 22. That is over 1000 games of experience there, and I think most would only have 1 or 2 in the best 22.

If they are replaced by Erasmus, Reid, Banfield and Wagner, then it will be interesting to see how we handle certain in game situations or if we need to wait until quarter time or half time to fix issues in our team.

A good experienced team with several smart on field leaders, can adjust the game plan very quickly.
The mid team can adjust the game plan at quarter time.
An in experienced team, it may take 5 or 6 training to work it out.


A separate question, but do we an on field coach? Pearce looks to be pretty good. Not sure about Brayshaw and Serong.

If he's a premiership winning captain he'll be upped a few levels in the AFLosphere and a great piece for a neonatal team to get. But, yes, unlikely to return much for us in any trade scenario.

What about the forward line?

Bolton will bring in plenty of experience to the mid-fwd areas.

The transition does have to be managed well though. I'm tending to be more glass half full here.

As long as they get good preseason's and stay healthy for most of the year, the coaches will have plenty of scope to deploy/manage their talent and experience to maximum benefit

The Eagles are papering over the problem. They need 4-5 big drafts (quantity as well as quality) and they haven't started yet.

I don't think they need 4 or 5 big drafts. 5 drafts is 2029 and the last won a final in 2019 and played one in 2020. They will be aiming for 2026 being the last draft that's material. The issue they have left themselves by 1) holding on so long, 2) poor returns from from their picks from 2018 to 2022 3) Trading away a percentage of their current currency for old players now, is will need better than average luck to fill all the spots in the future 22 with the draft picks they have in 2025 and 2026.

If they get that luck they will be good, they have a very talented, if small, core. If they miss on too many picks it will continue to be deliciously dire. Particularly if the infusion of older talent this year doesn't keep them out of the bottom 2 or 3. The lower they finish the harder it will be to trade players in / keep Harley.

The stat is a bit of rubbish really if Fyfe and Walters offer nothing next year then retire. End of the day it's just a stat and needs additional context to tell the full story. Your question in your post is part of that story btw.

JOM is contracted past next season and whether you think that's a good idea or not he's still offering enough that I can't see the club moving too much to change that.

So yeah, don’t be getting your hopes raised that we will be getting a huge draft compensation package if Pearce moves to Tassie in 2028.

He had already announced his retirement after being told he wasn't guarantied a spot the next year. He reversed his retirement to go to GWS. So he's not an applicable example in any scenario where Pearce wants to go to Tassie but we want to keep him.

But yeah the idea we could get compensation if he leaves is laughable.

I think Treacy is tbh but starting last season he wasn't guaranteed best 22. That's obviously changed.
