If Jess Hogan can turn himself around, so can Oliver
But he is another inside mid with questionable foot skills. Why?

He will literally eat into the time of others, and I don't think he will provide us with what we need. If it's to be a defensive minded mid? Are we serious?

Our midfield seems to be: Brayshaw, Serong, Young as absolute locks. Chop outs via Johnson, Bolton, Jackson, Erasmus, Reid and probably others.

I don't get it. I don't even understand it.

PLUS, he is 100% not going to come to Fremantle.

I don't see the world where you make a play for Oliver and keep Darcy. We got enough guys running through the middle, and the only feasible way that changes is Darcy leaves and Jackson takes the #1 ruck mantle.

There's teams out there which Oliver can help. Obviously not the dominant stoppage force he was at the peak of his powers, and the stuff he was already bad at before he's worse at now. But if teams wanted James Worpel, teams should want Oliver. I just don't think we're one of those teams.

Are you thinking Oliver takes Jackson's midfield time?

Hogan turned it around from a worst spot.

Not a fair argument given Oliver will cost nothing in terms of draft capital - you can do both. Also, some people think our midfield gets beaten up by bigger bodies and have voiced going after Cripps. Oliver is a solution to that problem if you think its an issue.
Its a good argument, but what would it say to the rest off the team.
With Erasmus, Johnson coming on now and Jackson playing on ball against the bigger players like Cripps thats sort of covered.
We would be stuck with him for 5 years.
Has multiple off field issues.
Questions over is want to play AFL and a one trick pony.
If we really needed a big bodied clearance mid that only had one job Brodie would be in the 22.
As much as Oliver likes a gamble I dont think Freo do.

That's how it'd have to work. You need to get to 300% centre bounce attendance from the mids (coz there's 3 of them). Brayshaw Serong Young combined gets you north of 200%. Bolton and Jackson will get a decent chunk of the remainder. And then you got basically all our wingers apart from Sharp fighting for the rest.

For Oliver to come in, someone has to come out - you can't find ~70% CBA by trimming around the edges.

As has been mentioned by others, you probably have to ship Darcy out to make it work. Oliver still finished 5th in Melbourne's BnF, he is a better midfield player as it stands then all of the 2nd tier names you mention. Some are concerned our midfield isnt big or deep enough. Wont get many better player to put in there for free then Clarry Oliver AND there is a chance he actually gets back to his best still.

I would have personally preferred a Merrett type but if you want to make our midfield stronger, Oliver seems a good get to me with Melbourne paying 700k

I think we can start Brayshaw off the wing for the bounce then bring him into the stoppage since he is really high up there in CBA% but averages 2 centre clearances a game, he gets more clearances at general stoppages (3). Similar to Wines last year, starting on the wing and then swaps into the general stoppage for follow up.

Not quite as striking as Johnson though, who averages 0.5 centre clearances and 2.5.

I agree that there would need to be movement and someone comes out. I don't really want it to be Jackson because I think he could be special.

Is Derksen a decent DFA add? Not that we need any backs atm but if Cox and Pearce both go down (historically speaking not out of the question) then we're looking a little thin if Draper doesn't come on

Also I think I'm on the Neale train if he wants to come and the price is right. Need some leadership and having 3xGF, 2x premiership experience will be invaluable. Set him up for a coaching role post playing...

190 plus cm's. has kicked lots of goals in the VFL. If he was shorter I would be keen.

He is a forward, not a back.

Derksen more a forward than a defender from memory? I'm not fussed if he comes or not

Also, Geelong won’t be in on Oliver now, for the same reason they weren’t looking at juh.

Too much drama with Stengel and smith already
The way Scott defends Smith makes it seem like he is on the boaderline of the shit hitting the fan

Derksen was under out Nose at peel and we didn't snap him up. Says a lot....

I wonder if I can find multiple counter examples...

There is no chance we've gone to all this effort with the choirboys to blow it up for 50% of Oliver.

He was a forward for Peel wasn’t he?
Him and Blight would be good additions for West Coast. Both have a lot to prove.

Stengel? Thought he has settled down of recent years ?

Smith is bizarre. How long until the coaches just blow up and call him out.

How cheap (salary wise) would you be interested?

Don't worry about what the club would do, they almost certainly won't even bother to ask the question, but what's an appropriate salary for the level of risk?
