Back by popular demand. However...

There has been some aggro from publishers of articles in recent months about sites that copypasta their content onto other sites, particularly the paywalled ones, which could lead to fines and whanot for those that do it. Apparently there are copywrite laws for these things. As a result we can no longer have full articles reposted here, so if you come across something then please refrain from nabbing the whole thing and just post the link. Quoting a paragraph or two and linking the source is fine however, just don't get greedy.

Here's the updated site-wide rule: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/please-read-re-copyright-posting-newspaper-articles.1389553/

Here's an example of what you can do:

"If West Coast was the gold standard for how to operate, then Fremantle's arrival into the AFL in 1995 could be viewed as a series of cautionary tales.

Despite eight wins in that debut season, a series of poor recruiting choices meant they didn't play their first final until 2003."

If they believe that us not making finals until 2003 was solely due to "a series of poor recruiting choices" then I have a bridge to sell them.

Thanks for your understanding.

Awwwww diddums.
You bunch of blue and white hacks been living off that area for as long as anyone remembers.
The gravy trains over for the gummy sharks.
With hopefully the piece de resistance of the shake up being they hand it over to south’s 😃

WAFL was huge in country regions in the 1970s. The ABC would broadcast a full game live every Saturday. You'd play junior footy, usually on Saturday morning, come home, have the VFL on the radio until 3/4 time and the broadcast would switch coverage to the WAFL. On Sunday you'd go to the watch the local league comp and come home and watch the Winners. VFL, while being the best comp, if you had a team, you weren't as passionate about it as you were for your WAFL team and your team in the local competition.

I lived in Geraldton in the 1970's. Was never really aware of the zoning in the WAFL and having a team in our region but one year it kind of just seemed to just change overnight. Kids always used to kick the footies around on the oval but suddenly you'd see all this EF merchandise, blue and white jumpers and footballs everywhere. Watching them I would think how can these kids be so stupid just putting on these colours that were passed out to them from the back of a van. I even refused to take a football I won in competition. A free footy they said for the first kid that comes to the reception area under the grandstand - they didn't say it was painted blue & white. Have to give EF some credit for their powers of propaganda brainwashing.

One midweek turning up to junior training, without any pre-announcement, we're looking at two Sandover medallists, David Hollins and Graeme Melrose giving us our drills in handball. Sure, they only hung around for 20 minutes, but we were like one age division out of about 5 divisions training on the oval, and one of about 8 junior clubs in the competition.

Melrose last played for Old Easts in 1974. We are going back over 50 years.

That’s a pretty long history to have some ****ing meddling bureaucrats wandering in to have a fiddle with.

Just because South Fremantle’s idea of development in the regions is rocking up every couple of years and chucking out a few plastic footies, complaining it’s cold and ****ing off to the top pub, doesn’t mean we have to be punished.

You take Gero, we’ll have the southwest and in 10 years time you pathetic bitches will be wanting another shakeup.

They don't just fall off the tree.

If anything, East Fremantle’s metro catchment area is demographically hidebound and in need of some assistance in the shakeup. We’ll take White Gum Valley, Hilton and, ummm, Ellenbrook.
I’m not driving to Ellenbrook at 7:30am on a Sunday morning.

Just saying for kids outside of the capital cities the WAFL players were superstars we only saw on TV. A few players in the country team I played with went on to play for EF and you can't really hate them for who they play for when you see them close up.

I'm probably speaking in retrospect about Melrose being thought of as a Sandover medallist. I would have been Under 12's or something. EF took over the zone a few years before that but they really started working it with clinics
around '73, '74.

I have another dull story about meeting the bloke in your avatar a few years later too - asking me directions to the local football ground from the passenger seat of a car of rowdy blokes. The silent pause between answer "yeah I am" and me asking "Are you Brian Peake?" I was too awestruck to look to see who else was in the car.

Chris Hicks and Terry Wade are the first ones I remember being recruited from the zone. I think there's 4 or 5 players from the Great Northern League that played in the 1979 derby GF.

A blue and white ball is great for kick to kick on the road. The ones we'd steal from Perth Oval were the ones we used at the park.

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Melbourne forward Kysaiah Pickett has broken his silence about reports he’s pursuing a trade to Fremantle, conceding that he is suffering from homesickness.
Pickett has been at the forefront of headlines over a potential move to the Dockers, fanning the flames after liking a social media post about a possible move.
The Herald Sun revealed that Pickett has been texting his mates who play for Fremantle telling them he will be in Dockers colours next year. The 23-year-old is contracted to the Demons until the end of 2027 and has previously explored his trade options

My favourite piece of play from us yesterday was Treacy hitting up Amiss.

We have a clear advantage with Sturt running shotgun and theoretically it should result in a goal but how many times have you seen us **** these opportunities up? It's almost like we get too excited, I don't know, but good teams treat these situations like a layup.

After the fact it looked so easy and obvious but check out these screenshots and let me know at which point Treacy had made his decision to kick it where he did and how Amiss communicated this to him?

Edit* just had a thought. What if Amiss isn't communicating where he wants it but it is actually Treacy dictating to Amiss.

Agree I thought that was play of the day as well.

I remember seeing the ball flying out to the wing and expected our player to read the flight completely wrong. Then realised it was Treacy.

Then saw the two defenders applying pressure and expected an imminent holding the ball decision. Then remembered it was Treacy.

Then expected for us to do something Freo-esk and get called for running too far. Then remembered it was Treacy.

Saw Amiss running towards goal and expected we'd just bomb the ball long out in front of him to run on to which the defender on Amiss would have gobbled up. Then remembered it was Treacy.

Then expected the change of direction to get past the second defender to result in us slipping over and f**king up the whole play. Then remembered it was Treacy.

Saw that Amiss had timed his lead back at the ball perfectly but still expected the ball to miss him and instead get closer to hitting up the field umpire further out. Then remembered it was Treacy.

Relaxed when Amiss held the mark and lined up for a shot on goal he's more than capable of kicking 19 out of 20 times. Yeah nope, of course I expected him to miss... I'm a long suffering Freo fan. You don't relax until the goal umpire signals the goal, and even then you're still wary of them changing their mind for some technicality that has never happened before in the history of the AFL.

In #2 you can see the defender has good coverage on Amiss so Treacy changes direction.
In #4 you can see the communication where Amiss points where he wants it, and by virtue of the change of direction the defender had to stop, leaving an easy passage of space to kick into.

Good football.

Treacy is a gun, such an exciting player. Still young enough for some further improvement too. We are fortunate to have a player and leader of his quality.

That turning & leading at the ball carrier is what Treacy should've done when I think it was Erasmus had to have a ping from 50 on the run

absolutely awesome.
What I liked:
1. Everyone got a lick of the highlights ice cream. Gee that Banfield can play.
2. Bring back the old jumpers. Petition started.
3. Can we play all our away games in Alice Springs? Why? Indigenous connection and all that...
4. Can we put Jordan Clark on Harley Reid? You know what to do.
5. If Treacy learned to mark like that surely the brilliant athlete Dogga can too.
6. Finishing with Pearce's match-winning defender's captain's goal was sublime.
