There has been some aggro from publishers of articles in recent months about sites that copypasta their content onto other sites, particularly the paywalled ones, which could lead to fines and whanot for those that do it. Apparently there are copywrite laws for these things. As a result we can no longer have full articles reposted here, so if you come across something then please refrain from nabbing the whole thing and just post the link. Quoting a paragraph or two and linking the source is fine however, just don't get greedy.

The whole accepting mediocrity thing is silly. If you’ve supported Freo for any length of time you are accepting mediocrity because Freo are the embodiment of mediocrity and the only way to stop accepting mediocrity is to stop supporting the club.

thistimeforsure does have a point though that as a fanbase we tend to celebrate mediocrity. The amount of people hanging their hats on the fact we won 16 games this year as if this was some extraordinary achievement when:

a) we’ve never had a such a big discrepancy between the top 9 vs bottom 9. From round 14 onwards the record between top 9 vs bottom 9 teams was 47-3, and two of those 3 upset wins were Sydney who were clearly a level above the other 8 teams below them. We’ve never had a team win 14 games and miss finals. 16 wins this year is equivalent to 12 wins any other year.

b) we barely scraped over the line multiple times against said bottom 9 teams culminating in having the worst percentage of the top 8 by a decent margin. A bit of luck going against us and we wouldn’t have made finals.

c) speaking of finals, we won zero and the cherry on top was giving the nepo club their first ever finals win.

I don’t care if it’s PR speak, Garlick, Brierty and co. have repeatedly talked a big game and have yet to deliver. We are primed to have a big 2026 so I’m going to withhold judgment until we’ve actually played a game but we were also primed to have a big 2025 and we fell short of expectations.

So I don’t come across as a complete negative Nancy, I will say I think we had somewhere between a decent to good year. So a pretty good year. We ended the season better then we started it, went 12-4 after the St Kilda embarrassment, had some great wins against top opposition, saw improvement in some of our younger players and played with a bit more freedom then past years.

But if you had told me at the start of the year that we’d scrape into the 8 and lose a home elim final where we didn’t fire a shot for 3 quarters, I’d be disappointed with that.

It all depends on what your opinion of the team is. I think this is the most talented team we’ve ever had, more talented than the 2012-2015 era, so maybe my expectations are higher. Others clearly disagree.

Ah, no. There's lots of criticism of the club that doesn't get met with sarcasm. There is also a lot of SUPPORT for the club that gets met with sarcasm, e.g. the "accepting mediocrity" trope.

Maybe that's just the risk we run when we post an opinion on a discussion forum.
