Review 2025 Mid Season Review

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We can be glass half full or glass half empty about where we are.

Glass half empty- doubt we beat Carlton on their current form and we nearly lost to WC at home. Apart from GC game, not many other decent overall games other than similar trash in North and Bombers.

As one poster has said. Take out Broad, Nank, vloss, lynch, Prestia and probably McIntosh none of whom will be here or much good after 3 years so progress may not be linear and any way, that’s a lot of talent for young guys to cover just to break even

We have had a lot of good picks and two more this year so have lots of young guys. But so do Bombers and saints and where are they at- so do we/will we have enough that are good enough or elite. In 2017 we had 8 maybe 9 elite (A grade) and spread all across the ground. Do we have that? I have no idea. Time will tell.

Glass half full- this post is too long already.

Season has been okay so far. For a massive rebuild, we’ve won quarters and been in a few games, a few blow outs to be expected. Injury management remains an issue - disappointing to not see Smillie so far but hopefully will see him and Hotton before year is out. I don’t think Green and MRJ will make it, just play Alger; midfield has a few honest triers but nowhere near finals quality. While I’d love Harley Reid, we need multiple young mids so think we need both 2025 first rounders for speed in this year’s draft. Retire/delist - Collina, Young, Bauer, McIntosh. Sonsie playing for his career next 4-5 games, give Smith, Dow, Lynch one year deals ; two years for Blight and Gray; 3 years for Banks; don’t see Fawcett making it but maybe 1 year deal or rookie list. Dion probably retires, can still play but availability always an issue. Biggest disappointment has been Ross. Yze done okay but no need to rush another deal, no one is knocking the door down for him so assess mid-2026. Top 5 for B&F Taranto, Vlaustin, Hopper, Nank and Miller. Looking forward to seeing Lalor, Smillie and Hotton all on the field together hopefully this year.

Richmond have perfomed way better than expected in 2025

3 wins against Carlton (was expected top 8 this year) Gold Coast (was a top 4 ) West Coast ( just a shit list)
Lost 2 games which we should have won by a goal , NorF's (very unlucky to lose) GWS could have won but inexperience
NorF's game was the game we should have won and been on 4 wins

Are you really saying that Taranto’s and Hopper’s disposal is as good as Nick Daicos an Sidebottom? Shows what a useless statistic disposal efficiency is. However the real issue is that these guys are in their prime and they are being badly beaten by the better midfields and we are not trying to develop different options.
Showing that their disposal efficiencies are similar doesn't mean I'm saying their disposals are the same quality. I'm simply saying they're being unfairly criticised.

Overall, very happy with how we are going in 2025.

3 very good performances v Blues, Suns and Giants.

5 reasonable performances v Brisbane, Melbourne, Eagles, North, Essendon(given who we had out.)

5 times we have been totally outplayed v Port Adelaide, St Kilda, Fremantle, Hawthorn and Sydney.

You would love to see perhaps one more very good performance and one less totally outplayed performance, but that is being picky. We have been fielding teams with a lot of inexperienced players, and our forward line and midfield have not played many games together in their best formation even before this season.

I think what we are all eagerly anticipating is in about 2 years time when a lot of our talented youngsters have got 50 odd games under their belts and the team should be pretty stable by then, albeit with some quality veterans likely retired.

We are seeing what you want to see from a young team, the youngsters are trying to play the way the team wants them to play, rather than just chasing kicks, goals etc. Yze seems to be proving a very decent coach, but he will ultimately be judged by how good the team becomes during the years where expectations will rise. The conditioning program seems to be producing fit and fast athletes.

I think realistically had we met every team at their season's best we would not have been in too many games, but no team has to face every opponent at their best. What we are seeing is that as soon as the opposition show any weakness in their performance we get a glimpse into our future, and that future looks bright to me.

Against moderate expectations, our first half of 2025 is a resounding tick for mine.

I've really enjoyed this season to date, and I'm actually incredible surprised to say that. A year ago, watching us was a tough ask. We had no hope, everything was doom and gloom. Not only were we watching the team decline and our greatest players retire, we were also enduring the gut wrenching spectacle of seeing our next wave of stars exit the club for greatest opportunities elsewhere. Throw in injuries to our remaining pivotal players, the exit of (arguably) our greatest ever CEO, and things were bleak indeed.

Fast forward to today and everything seems far rosier.

Our club looks like its back to being all on the same page from the admin down. Our coach is slowly building a game plan built on the strengths of the developing squad. He has a focus on the future but is still hungry for success in the present. I applaud him for that. I see him playing the kids but, ensuring they are supported and protected by experience. I can see the transition he has modeled, with older players slowly being phased out with more capable youth. It'll take some time yet but the plan is there. You can see it. I love watching how the man relates to the younger players, the joy he has giving them their first game, the passion he has when they succeed. He's doing everything he can to build a team that he'll eventually lead to a flag. That long term view is crucial.

Then there are our players, new and old. Players such Nank, Lynch, Vlaustin, Broad, Prestia and McIntosh are all crucial leaders in the side. They need to shoulder the burden, protect the kids and help educate the new recruits, to take their place in the near future. Taranto, Hopper, Balta, Miller and Ross are also experienced leaders but are in their late twenties so conceiably, could still be playing when we are pushing for our next flag.

Finally, there are our new recruits. Could you have ever hoped for a better bunch of kids?! Odds on some may not make it but atm its difficult to pinpoint who. Lalor is already a critical part of our forwardline and team. He oozes clash, poise and maturity. Tainor is a steal as a key backman but, such is his vertility, that he is already able to play wing or forward. Then there are are our three key forwards. They must have recruited three, hoping at least one would come on. Well, all three look promising currently and all offer a point of difference in the forwardline. Sometimes have have to catch myself when I get frustrated at their goal kicking and have to remind myself that they have only played a handful of games. Considering young talls typically take longer to come on, they are tracking amazingly.

Then there is what we still have on the sidelines - Hotton, Smilie and Gibcus, are all like shiny new race cars, sitting in the shop, itching to be unleashed on the track and cut through their opposition. We all have massive hopes for these kids and probably need to temper this atm but it bloody tough when you see what they can do. Any and all of them could be stars. It will be super exciting to watch their introduction to the competition this second half of the season.

So, as a midseason review, I couldn't be happier. Could we have more wins on the board, definitely, but I'm happy to be near the bottom of the ladder to help rebuild further next draft. As long as I keep seeing the younger players grow and give me glimpses of the future, I think this season will go down as one of my favourities.

Being a passionate supporter is as much about the journey as the destination and starting our next tilt in this manner has me brimming with expectation for the future.

My only negative really has been not being able to go to see many games. Otherwise, yeah a great season, if you take the long view.

it was never that bad last year and this year has been good.

people need to digest one team wins a premiership this year, not us, all the other clubs will be with RFC so we are amongst a big bunch. the club that wins the premiership this year will not be there forever

I am more glass half full than empty, win/losses are meaningless, the kids are developing well

Our senior players have performed better than they did last year, however when they decide not to turn up, we get blown off the park. Our new recruit's half have missed all or majority of the season so we still have so much to look forward to.

People don't realise that if we were a normal bottom team with no compromised drafts we would have had picks 1 & 19 last year. To have that pick plus another 3 picks in the top 15 is basically 4 seasons of being on the bottom.

The fact we lost Rioli, Baker & Bolton and are still performing better this year than last year when we still had them makes it even more impressive.

We are going alright. We are actually that far ahead that this year's picks aren't as crucial as they would be for other teams. If we can add 2 decent kids on top of our list we are in a strong place.

the trades we did last year was 100 percent supported by what has taken place this year so we are going in the right direction.

more importantly we are better placed than a lot of other teams

I actually think that with the picks we will use in the 2024 and 25 seasons are worth even more than 4 normal years. Even if a team finished in the bottom of the ladder for four consecutive seasons, you would only get four early 1st round selections (picks 1-8) and four early second (20 - 28).

We effectively had six selections in the first round, traded into the draft to get a player we would have taken in the first round too and then we picked up another extremely early first pick for next season. So that's 8 first round picks or, for a team without trading back in etc, 8 seasons worth of 1st round picks!

We've only just started this rebuild, This is ground zero. From this point on, we will have the luxury of filling whole in the side/list with early selections and trading in quality players, and the leap up the ladder will happen fast.

The big thing to me is that last year we drafted a complete team core - the spine, midfield and X factor players - all high potential. So from here on is we fill holes and take opportunities as they are presented.

North has an unbalanced list because they have not taken that balanced group of players. Other teams rebuilding often don't have the picks to build a balanced list of talent. We do, so we can (hopefully) go from a high potential squad to a deep group of talent that covers all the bases.

things are not that simple or easy.

what we think we have we may have not.

Ultimately the players win the games on the field and their actions dictate our success and how exciting they may be if we decide to recruit/draft them

we have lot of talent, do we have a full book??? maybe, maybe not, too early to tell and talent and application drives us not form or shape or perception

Don't forget also we are likely(with reasonable luck) to add back Gibcus, which will look like 9 rd 1 picks plus the first pick in the second round, Sims if you don't mind.

In a year or two other clubs supporters will be saying where the **** did Richmond get all these high end kids from. In 4 or 5 years the talent on our list is likely to look absolutely stunning. Remembering we already seem to have franked a 20yo rookie as a likely elite class player as well, Campbell. I think you can throw Tom Brown in there as well. So let's wind forward to rd 1 2028, we could have up to about 12 top class youngsters in our rd 1 team between 20 and 24 years of age.

If I go back to our rd 1 2017 team, we would have had Prestia 24, Dan Rioli almost 20 and Vlastuin 22 who would fit that description. Brandon Ellis was in that age group at 23 but you probably wouldn't say was ever potentially elite class. Over our dynasty years we added guys like Balta, Boton, Baker, Short. But this would be like all of those being 20-24 at rd 1 2017 plus another 4 of them. It is a coruscating amount of talent to unleash within such a short window.

Although I agree, not my point Magic.

What I said was we drafted a complete spine + midfield core + a couple of X factor players. OK, the KPDs are already on the books - but we completed the spine.

Quite possibly we end up with all KPFs failing (fore example). But what I am saying is that we drafted a balanced group so that if we are lucky and do development well we will have a well balanced list of talent across all lines, with that extra sparkle that genuine contenders do. We have given ourselves a better shot at winning a title or two than teams that have an unbalanced rebuild list. That's all.

If all goes well we'll have A grade talent on all lines from around 2028. That's why I keep putting 2028 in my posts as the year we have in focus for what is going on this year. 2024 draftees should have 50ish games, and the pre-2024 draftees should all be mature AFL players. It could well be that we suddenly have that mature deep well balanced list that just goes bang! Bottom 5 to top 8 in one year, with some scintillating talent on show.

And Damn! I had to look up coruscating. thought you'd misused it, but well played sir.

It's funny you normally hear coruscating used associated with being eye-catching. I probably should have said a coruscating array of talent rather than amount of talent. But I do think it is the right word to describe what is happening with our 2024 draft crop being added to a few other young players who look more than decent. It is all a bit under the radar at present because:

a) they are most very young kids first year in the system,
b) several of them are/have been rehabbing, Smillie, Lalor, Armstrong, Hotton, Gibcus and sadly now again Clarke, &
c) we are likely to get about 3 more players around the level of our top few youngsters from the next 2 drafts, if we don't trade the picks.

There is just no precedent to an established club unleashing that level and depth of young talent, it could be roughly half a team of very highly rated players aged 20-24 together. If you look at North's current team, and they might be the closest thing we have seen, they have about 7 of these highly rated junior types playing together aged 19-24 at present, Sheezel, Wardlaw, Powell, Stephens, O'Sullivan, McKercher, & Curtis. But they are all mids and forwards. We will probably have about 11 or more of them(likely up to 4 2021 crop, 7 2024 crop, + Campbell + 3 premium picks to come so 11 allows for a decent rate of attrition) spread into all roles across the field. And in our case likely joined by a couple of high end free agents which North have not been able to manage yet.

I don't think any of this has properly dawned on the football public as yet. It will be entertaining watching the reactions when they finally figure it out. 😁

Yeah. I suspect/hope that it will all come in one big bang. As the group hits that level of AFL maturity roughly together the team will 'suddenly' step up a level of two.

Around 2028/29 we should see a team full of young players who have matured to be ready for full time AFL play. I can't remember a team where this has happened. And of course, if they roughly come through in one wave the whole should be more than the sum of its parts. Our mids and KPFs should be ready for the big stage together, having spent years learning how to play together. It can all go wrong. But we have set ourselves up to have a red hot go at the whole shebang for a period of 8 - 10 years. That could be a good time to be Tiger fans - I hope.

well I look at our players and other options.

We have a lot of versatile players.

I think we have a number of players that could play FB. So that is more likely covered than not. CHB I think we have a few options.

CHF and half forward is a little interesting but we have some possibilities,

FF is even more interesting.

the positions may be covered they may not but those that think such and such will play in a specific position may be proved wrong over time.

I think other areas are greater weaknesses but the point is if best available is a screaming upgrade for our list we probably pick them no matter what the role/position. What I am trying to write is the output/performance of the recruit dictates more so their eligibility to be picked in my perception rather than necessarily fitting a certain niche we believe we are deficient in, The thing is there are other options so we do not need to go overboard on deficiency when we are patient, I believe it is more important we bring in the better players as a rule regardless. Then there is the concept very very good players can play in a number of positions and be very competitive, if not super stars

It also depends on what other teams are doing,, we are in competition and the positions are in the context of beating such opposition so we cannot look at certain positions in isolation when really it is in the context of beating other teams and their mix combinations now and going forward

Star midfield duo Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto are Richmond’s standouts in the statistical department at the midway mark of the 2025 season.

A thorough statistical analysis of the Club’s playing group shows that Hopper features in the top five of the key categories more than any other Tiger, but he is tied with first-class defender Nick Vlastuin in terms of No. 1 rankings.

Hopper’s name appears 13 times in the 21 specific categories (five times as No. 1), with Taranto next best on 12 (four times as No. 1), followed by Jack Ross on 10 (twice as No. 1), Vlastuin with nine (five as No. 1) and then captain Toby Nankervis on seven.

Here’s the full list of Richmond’s stats stars up to the mid-season bye.

2. Sam Banks, 149
Eq. 3. Jacob Hopper, 141
