Draft begins tonight with the first round. While we have no picks, there is a chance we could see one, maybe two bids coming in tonight for the like of Kyle, King and Carmichael who are projected to go anywhere in the 15 to 30 range.

Our interest tonight is that they fall as far as possible to make matching their bids easier and also hope father son and NGA and others Northern State academy players are selected to bring our picks into a higher value range.

We have 5 selections, 31, 32, 42, 60 and 71 and will take 3 or 4 selections depending on how large we want our senior list to be.

I must admit, I knew we were going to be giving away our first pick months ago, was not sure how, but I knew we would, so I have not actually studied this draft much. I don't really know the top 10 like I usually do, though it does seem like a fairly weak draft all things considered.

Just highly compromised but the top 10-12 probably up to the end of Melb’s selections are very good. It’s just annoying so many are tied to clubs at the top end

I'm not sure its an obviously weak draft. It's just the cream will go to 5 or 6 clubs instead of 11 or 12 as is normal. It's not a strong draft but it's not the black hole a lot thought it might be.

The good recruiting teams will shine in a draft like this one.

If we come out of this draft with King, Kyle and Carmichael then we will have had a very good trade/draft period.
Absolutely. I am pretty high on all 3, for different reasons, and while I don't expect any of them to come in and play AFL straight away, adding them to the young tall defenders, the smalls, Will Green in the ruck etc, we have a pretty impressive list of potential players across many positions. Would like to see a developing key forward, but hey you can't be too picky.

Have heard that Harry Kyle is now set to go at Pick 2, but is in discussions with Chelsea on a position on the right wing or a rookie contract at the Lakers. Unfortunately will be unable to attend tonight due to scheduling conflicts with the Milan Fashion Show and the Australian Philanthropy Award Ceremony.

Don't forget he has been chosen to represent the Australian Philosophy Society at the International Federation of Philosophical Societies in Rome.

Should've closed the thread temporarily after this

I actually do , but it's the useless content drafts from nobodies that i don't and the pressure on the kids and families , i experienced it last year , not my family , but close to it and be there on the night
I feel for the kids who are doing their HSC as well. They have the pressure of both events at basically the same time.

Today is an example of why I didn't like our bidding strategy in previous years. We have deliberately bid on GWS players for instance just to be annoying, and now GWS have the ability to return the favour. If we didn't bid on the GWS players in the past, make GWS pay more for their players, then perhaps GWS would have returned the favour today and not bid on any of our players.

Which of the GWS players we bid on were a reach or spiteful bids?

Name one GWS player we 'bid' on to be annoying. I'm sorry but which one is it? Tom Green? I'd love the bloke in our side mate, will go close to a Brownlow. Harry Rowston? Again I'd like him in our side and filled a position of need as an inside midfielder he's only not being a regular as GWS have a bucket of mids.

I can't think of one bid that wasn't a fair bid

I would argue Harry Rowston as at the time even Twomey was a bit surprised as it was seen as a bit of a reach.
My recollection was that many people thought the bid was at about the right spot. If it was one or two places above expectations then it would have been because not being a flight risk was seen as a valuable trait.

Wasn't much of a reach expected to go within the next 10 or so, and suited a direct need, he would be getting games every week in our side

After Rowston we bid on Michelaney from the Crows and no one will tell me that wasn't a fair bid, near the best young interceptor in the game.

Our bids have been fair.

The 2019 live pick swap with the Crows and then using their pick to bid on Mead seemed a bit suspicious. Obviously we must have rated him, but wouldn't surprise if there was an added request as part of the swap.

Yeah that would be the only puzzling one good pick there. The rest though in general have been around the mark. What I'd give for a Tom Green in our midfield

Heard a few things today.

Kyle expected to be in top 16 selections (Swans expect GWS to bid).

Sydney are not sure on Carmichael, depends on how other selections fall, chance at the Bulldogs or GWS but if others are available could fall past pick 30.

King may not be called on first night (Still rated internally as the best prospect of the three by the Swans, who believe on talent should be top 10).
