It becomes a public safety issue.

If people are advised to stay home then how can they expect all the players/official/stadium worker to be at the ground. Not to mention the chance that Geelong get stuck for a few days in Brisbane.

They must be hoping the forecast improves, but you'd think they pull the pin tomorrow if it doesn't.

EPL games often aren't cancelled until the morning of the game when weather is a factor.
(They do have more 'gaps' in which to reschedule, but it turns out here, just in this one case...)
[So don't be surprised if we hear nothing for 72 hours at least].

True, but the distances are less in England

Think there’s a fair difference with EPL. Can make up games mid week and get away with not flying in most cases.

This really should be a layup for the AFL, Move the game to round 3 and don’t **** around.

Honestly, I am looking forward to someone kicking at goal, 15m out, directly in front, and watching the ball go right between the goal posts.... on the opposite side of the ground.

Wo! Boomer anger? 🤗

I'm not saying what the AFL should do...
I genuinely don't know why you and the next poster mentioned modes of transport?!
Geelong fly up as usual. The fly home when the decision is made. On the same booked flight or on a chartered flight from a major AFL sponsor. Honestly can't even see how that's being considered a thing.
[Also, I suspect the last EPL team to take a train lost the 19-dickerty-2 FA Cup on penalties after on of the goats in cattle class charged their goalie... 😉]

Anyway. We live in a supercoach bubble here. I get it. 🥳

Not sure about all teams but United regularly take the train to London for matches.

The problem with your scenario is that flights out of Brisbane could be an issue.

Manchester? Interesting. Genuinely interesting. 👍

Either way, IT'S NOT MY SCENARIO!! 🫣🤣

Not sure how my thoughts suddenly impact the AFL or Geelong's flights?! 😁
I'm sure that's all being considered.
All I suggested was that I'm not expecting an announcement until Wednesday night at the earliest. If there's a decision earlier, then yippee!

Not being mentioned, think the worst of the weather is expected to be passed by Saturday.

Enough Gold Coast supporters will have boats to sail over the after effects of 600mm of rain.

Bloody hell, half of the crowd will be holed down at home cleaning up, planes ferrying supporters up for the weekend will be cancelled.

What the hell is the AFL doing?

"Liaising with broadcasters."

Hoping the QLD government take it out of their hands probably.

Sorry. In a smart-@rsed mood...(and definitely not trying to offend anyone)...

So to be serious for one minute, there's just so much more to it.
The 'Gabba will have a contract with the AFL.
Virgin will have a contract with the AFL.
Geelong will have plans sorted and booked for their BYE.
The AFL absolutely have a contract with the broadcaster/s.
(Which, interestingly is one of the biggest hold ups of the EPL re-fixturing)

So much to work through.
(And needless to say that it's still only a possible situation. There's nothing too distressing predicted for the next 30 hours).

Gold Coast will be fine plastic floats

Wasn’t having a go at you if it came across that way.

I think you have significantly overreacted to the reply. I didn't see any anger in the reply at all.

I think a decision should be made tomorrow before the cats fly up. It's not just the players. How many supporters are going up for it?

I understand the contracts in place in terms of the ground, broadcast rights etc. but there would be contingencies in place for emergency situations.

To cancel it on the day of the game instead of making the call tomorrow would be a slap in the face for all concerned. The cats, the lions, the ground and it's staff, and not to mention the food that would be getting trucked in and potentially going to waste.

Aside from all that, there is the risk of flash flooding from isolated heavy falls that could cause chaos for people getting to and from the venue. I wonder how the AFL would feel if someone lost their life in the process of getting to or from the venue?

There is a simple solution. Play it in round 3. Don't mess with mother nature. Weather systems like this can change quickly.

I hope the Qld. government takes it out of the AFL's hands, because right now I don't think the AFL has all the stakeholders best interests in mind.

As if preparing for this season hasn't been enough of a nightmare, now we've got a ****ing tropical cyclone to factor in.

Suddenly a whole heap of Lions and Cats players become a lot more relevant.

W Ashcroft - already a lock in my team, but if Lions/Cats is postponed (presumably until round 3), he becomes far less of a POD grrrrr

Neale - potentially becomes the answer to our SP mid prayers with Butters and Bont out.

SDK - ideal on one hand if he doesn't have the early bye, but he's one that Opening Round would have been very useful to get a look at.

Holmes - becomes a very good starting option - probably a good one to swap NWM for for teams that have him if you have doubts after the byes.

Zorko - same as Holmes, more expensive and getting old but more exposed form.

Humphries - same as Zorko and Holmes but more speculative.

Baz - I don't have him atm so nothing changes for me, but like SDK I'd probably prefer the game goes ahead to get a look at him.

This SC season has been even more of a constant headache than usual and it hasn't even farken started yet fmd

Sorry to all. (Lindsay_Gilbee has been messaged).

There was zero malice from or to anyone in the conversation, so I'm sorry if it came across as such.
I just took a "joke" a bit far.

Needless for me to repeat, but I'm in no way advocating it being played... (As already explained)...which seems to be the vibe. [But if it is, it is. And it very well might be. It's all currently speculation after all].

Guess I'm just not an alarmist! 😇

OMFG, a team might take a needless 2 hour flight and my SC team is now a hot mess... 🤭 😉😉😉
