would have been a crow pie, tastes like pigeon but only saltier
Thought it tasted like chicken (not pigeon). Everything does, apparently.

Coaches don’t just vomit out stream-of-conscious thought bubbles. They get asked direct questions and they answer them. Nicks was asked about the impact of having Rankine out? I thought he gave a perfectly reasonable answer.

If Malthouse had been asked that question, he would have answered something along the lines of “having our best player out is not the reason we lost the game”. But I don’t think anybody would hold up Malthouse as a paragon of how to handle press conferences.

As for Fly - he seems to treat press conferences as addressing the Collingwood faithful - the wider AFL community seems like an afterthought. So I’m guessing he’d answer the question in much the same way as Nicks did.

I don’t think his handling of the Rankin situation was great.

He was responding to a question about how the Rankine situation affected the team. His answer was fine. Nothing to see here.

He was saying he didn't feel it was an off field distraction for the playing group, but that they're not as good a team without him. Every single person who follows AFL believes that they're not as good a team without Rankine.

He chose that narrative, it wasn't the only way to answer that question.

Nicks could have acknowledged Rankine's importance and then played with a straight bat, "but today is all about the players who represented the Adelaide Football Club and the way we responded to Hawthorn's challenge.". Take accountability for the performance and control the narrative.

What he implied is that "we're lesser without him" which is telling when one considers how the Crows performed. They lacked endeavour and played without confidence leading to an embarrassing finals exit.

Since 1955, the pies have playing in 19GF same amount as the Hawthorn, We have won 4 and lost 15.
WHY? Collingwood does not kick a score in the second half of Grand Finals, when it counts. Teams are always in with a chance.
5 of those losses were 10 points and under. Let that sink in.
In 2023, we only kick 3 goals (3.9) in the second half (Yes we missed a lot of shots), In 1990 4 goals (4.2).

We average just over 1 goal in the last quarter of Grand Finals, Yes there are a few exceptions in that stat, but the reason we keep losing is we do not kick a score, In fact we have had 3 GF were we failed to kick a goal in the last, 2011, 1981, 1958 and 6 times were we have only kicked 1 goal in the last quarter of a GF, 2002,1977, 1970, 1960, 1956 & 1955

Pies supporters might say, hey but that was over 50 years ago, let me ask you all this question, Why does history keep repeating itself for this club.
On the other hand the Hawks have won the majority of thier GF's because they have kicked a winning score in the second half of GF's.
Our winning GF percentage is 37.78% only better than St.kilda's with 18.75% (1 win in 8 GF appearances)

If we make it in 2025 and likely play the Cats, We can't have 2-4 goal second halves in the GF and expect to win.

GO PIES.
Great post. 2018 GF a great example. Got of to a flyer and then played conservative, try and protect the lead footy which never works. We however have the best Coach in the game who will have the group primed and ready to take on any challenge

Not anything he needed to say really. If their capitulation is due solely to the absence of one player then they have serious issues. He might have been better advised to play the straight bat and say the usual cliches… “ both teams have 22 players, it’s about the system not the individuals, one out one in” etc

I think we expect a lot. He's a footy coach. Last week he copped a smacking for not commenting on the ethics of booing. This week you see him focus in when the inevitable Rankine question is asked and he turns it away from the off field consequences to Izak Rankine the footballer and how significant he is to their team and thus how big a loss he was.

This is caro style stuff - the players are being too natural and swearing on tv. A coach is being too honest and saying what the whole industry knows - star players have a big impact on a team. Why are we criticising him for being honest rather than rolling out those cliches. And he ceretainly didn't say it was the sole reason - or a reason at all that the rest of the players played badly. He'd already spent 5 minutes talking about things like how much their fundamentals sucked.

I think the whole club has handled this poorly from start to finish. Including the coach. Don’t know where your Caro comment came from, that was left field and largely irrelevant.

Did you watch the whole presser? He'd already covered under performance. This was just how he chose to respond to the Rankine question.

Of course they're lesser without Rankine - the whole club knows that - just as our players and coaches know that we're lesser without our stars. They all acknowledge it too when we openly say that "***** makes us better." If he makes you better - you're lesser without him. And they acknowedge it in contracts and with trade prices. No one is that thick that you're going to trick them to think that they aren't a lesser team without Rankine..

Appreciate your research- but you do understand that is just an irrelevant piece of history.
And I hope you’re not expecting us to give it any credibility, in respect to predicting our future performance.

We likely won't agree on this one Savvy.

In my view, the way he answered that question was ordinary because he missed an opportunity to set the tone. One man's cliche answer is another man's principled response.

Can someone explain how stuff from 100 years ago is relevant to what will happen in the coming weeks?

Last night was one of those games where everyone wins one way or another. Happy to mock the Dorks but more than happy to hang shit on the straight set Crows after the shot from a few weeks ago and then last weekend. Was awesome.
Also feel it fell our way nicely, Hawthorn and Geelong smack the snot out of each other next weekend while we cruise pass a faltering Brions or Suns outfit.
Beautiful 👌

You need to chill the **** out.
Also we aren't in a grand final.

Because the Hawks were a basket case of a club who’d done nothing in their history for decades but in recent times have won flags like kids in a candy shop.
Oh wait…

Superstitious ****wittery is all.

My Caro reference is because I think it's ridiculously nitpicky. He said some harmless stuff that everyone agrees with, but apparently he was wrong to not roll out the cliches or say it the same way Fly would have: He makes us better. His absence makes us worse means the same thing.

Disagree but each to their own. You’re repeating yourself a bit now. Said the same thing a few times. Just because Caro calls something out doesn’t make what she says automatically incorrect.

Suns and Lions should not be written off.

Ridiculous to assume Pies will just automatically go to the GF when the game relies a lot on teams plans going accordingly.

Fair enough. I just think your criticising a coach for making a harmless comment that I assume you agree with. I don't really get it. I doubt many would disagree with Nicks. Rankine is a bloody good player and his absence negatively impacted their finals campaigns. That's why it was such a big story that has dominated his press conferences for a month. After they were knocked out, he stopped dodging that part and stated the bloody obvious.
