Our depth is actually a pretty major concern. We drop sharply from 23 or so . We retained a lot we should have cut last year so now have a glut of cuts to make. Need at least 2-3 developing mids
Our depth is a concern because Nicks doesn't expose the squad when there are opportunities to do so. Guys like Dowling, Nank, Edwards and Ryan should have had way more exposure to AFL than they have. Plenty of opportunities to play them, but Nicks has the tendency to revert to the more experienced options, the same low-ceiling known quantities or 'backing the boys in', than changing up the team for the sake of change.

So … just thinking a little left field
If we were to take a swing at someone, how about Nick Martin. Get him out of the rabble at Windy Hill. Goal kicking wingman that allows Curtin to move inside
Or, take a big swing at Bailey Humphrey. Long shot I know, but why the hell not

The primary question our list management team should be asking themselves is where can we find our next high quality frontline 5+year midfielder:
  • Already on our list
Curtin, Draper, Edwards, Dowling
  • Via a trade
Sam Walsh, Marcus Windhager, Alex Davies,
  • Via the draft
Dyson Sharp, other (draft watchers?)

We must do whatever it takes to identify, secure and develop this player which could make or break our premiership aspirations over the next few years.

would cost a lot

2 year conract: Zac Taylor, Hugh Bond

1 year contract: Taylor Walker

Ins

Trade: Callum Ah Chee, other trade in?

Draft: First rd pick ?, Mitch Stevens ? , 3rd draftee,

Extra signings: Indy Cotton (does not not take up a main list spot.)

Ah Chee seems pretty likely so that will mean minimum of 4 list changes to the senior list.

Might need to look at bringing some mature kpd depth if Butts goes looking for more game time.

Outs

Kieran Strachan (already replaced by My McAndrew)

Retire: Matt Crouch, Brodie Smith

Delistings: Lachlan Murphy, Chris Burgess, Karl Gallagher ( does not create a list spot.

Trade bait: Sholl, Berry, Butts (if he chooses.)

Potential depth only extensions: Schoenberg

We will never be a strong side while the coach/club refuses to develop his list. While coaches pets like Murphy, Smith, Scholl, Cook & Laird are being gifted games it limits the opportunities for Curtin, Draper, Pedlar Taylor. Edwards, Ryan & others to gain AFL experience. I would think Draper has learnt nothing about AFL football this year while Pedlar & Taylor play this ultra defensive game style under instructions that inhibits their natural flair as players. We have seen it with Jones who has had his his original talent & flair completely removed. Hinge Michalanney, Worrell, Nankervis, Edwards Ryan & possibly Cook should have been developed as mid fielders this year to provide more game day options.
Nicks cannot take this group any further & needs to go.
Next year we need significant changes in off field coaching & a priority emphasis on player development.

I agree, other than...

Spelling Sholl correctly
Worrell into the midfield
Hinge into the midfield
Murphy has only played 5 games this year
Cook is a coach's pet who shouldn't play, but then should have been developed in the midfield...even though he played a lot on the wing during his AFL games
Ryan should be playing senior midfield time
We will never be a strong side with our coach....you might have missed we finished top of the ladder
Curtin played evey game this year so his development was not comprised
Coach of the year needs to go

Cook is far from a midfielder, still has a lot of puppy fat on him.
Obviously not doing everything possible to get/keep himself into AFL shape, which is probably why he can't hold a spot down, skills are not the issue.

To be fair you were talking up Nicks' "success" before he's even achieved anything in the finals so I'm not really sure how critical you can be of other people's opinions at this point.

What we desperately lack is two A grade midfielders who can play 4 quarters and run both ways.

This should be a total an immediate priority over the summer.

Fast track Draper as much as possible and try and get 2 mids via FA or trade. The time to be aggressive is now to fix this glaring weakness.
It's all good to say fast track players but some players can't be fast tracked. Draper has shown little at SANFL level to demonstrate this immediate impact. I'd argue at the beginning of the season he was fast tracked. The club clearly carried both him at Curtin for multiple games with them often combining for 10 to 15 disposals.

Draper was dropped because the club determined we can't carry both. Next season we want him to play...but instead of who? Peatling? Soligo?

Cook has to be fast running out of chances though. Surely others have began to leap frog him in calculations. Personally I think Dowling should be getting a decent run at it next year.

Nick will be fine. Every loss is a massive disaster and every win doesn't mean anything has been a constant narrative.

The reality is that he has build an attacking plan, a possession plan and a tight team defence during a ground up rebuild. I never claimed he never makes mistakes or that he is the messiah. However, the level of irrational analysis is peaking.

It takes 2 or 3 finals campaigns to see consistently strong finals performances.
The Crows can keep building on this year's success. But the reactionary bullshit is old and tired...

The performance wasn't good enough. The players and coaches will learn and we move on.

You are right. It is over the top. How many finals campaigns did McRae go through before he won the premiership.

On a side note, since 2020 Collingwood turned over more players on it's ist than the Crows. Well it was on 2024. Could have changed since then.

Wouldn’t be too tough on him, I know there’s different body shapes, but we don’t have anyone in our best 20 odd that presents like Matt Rowell.

McRae took over a 17th placed side, got them to finals in his first year and a flag in his second.

What we NOWAND FOR NEARLY A DECADE desperately lack is two A grade midfielders who can play 4 quarters and run both ways.

This should be a total an immediate priority over the summer AND ITS AN INDICTMENT ON OUR RECRUITERS AND DEVELOPMENT STAFF THAT WE ARE STILL IN THIS POSITION AFTER SO MANY YEARS.

Fast track Draper as much as possible and try and get 2 mids via FA or trade. The time to be aggressive is YEARS AGO AND STILL now to fix this glaring weakness.

Nicks learn?

You mean how he learns not to recall Murphy for not being AFL standard?

Or like he learns not to go defensive?

Or how he learns not to let the opposition's dedender to be unmanned so they can doninate a game?

People only have the brains they are given...

I think theyre already on the list.

Draper will get there, and I think we'll see more of Curtin at CB next year. In the meantime we bring one in, Oliver, Bailey, whoever.... I dont care who it is, just do it. Get Rankine back in there, roll Rachele through there more and youve suddenly got a pretty handy midfield group.

Then youve got Peatling, Soligo and co dont have to do the heavy lifting and can do their bit as 2nd tier guys.
Draper and Curtin are potentially 2 way elite midfielders. Rankine and Rachele have the ability to play as elite offense midfielders and there's still concern around Soligo's fitness. His good is up their with the best, nearly won his 2nd Showdown medal and was equal to Dawson's output early in the season but has faded again just like his last 3 seasons.
