It isn't about Max, it is more about we have to give up something good to get something. We are unlikely to FA our way into a dominant mid and drafting one takes time (especially with our penchant to make them do apprenticeships) so if we are going to wiggle one free, it will cost us something decent and we have to be willing to do that.

These days you don't need to give up players to get good players. You use picks.

The Wellman - Jarman - Salmon trades are very rare.

I feel like he can only have at most two of ANB, Keys and Archee. You then have the key forwards and Rankine and Rachele.

I would have him but don't know if he improves the mix of players.

Is Ah Chee really a significant upgrade on Keays/ANB

You always have to give up more to get an experienced recruit than keeping the guy you currently have.

I’d be interested in Ah Chee if Tex retires and we’re looking at him as a 3rd hybrid tall type (I know he’s not actually that tall but is fairly handy overhead)

Why would we want to promote McAndrew? He can stay on the rookie list for another 2-3 years, and I see no reason whatsoever for putting him on the senior list.

He's already signed on until 2027, so I don't see any need to take any further action with him.

Upgrading him would count as one of the required 3 draft picks. There’s a fair chance that we only want to take 2 from the draft itself.

Attack wise hes an upgrade on ANB, but id rather ANB in the side.

I think if we're chasing him its exactly for what you suggest, either no Tex or a significantly reduced version.

So does this mean (with news Taylor and Bond are re-signing) we NEED Tex and Smith to retire and Murphy to be delisted just to make the minimum 3 draft picks, then any trade would mean a player has to leave too?

We can upgrade a rookie and re-draft a delisted senior to replace them.

I’d look to trade Berry as well if there were any takers, and I wouldn’t trade Butts unless he’s desperate to leave and we get well over his value.

I dont want him out at all, but not many key defenders would warrant a top 20 pick, much less ones who cant crack their sides AFL side.

Here’s a hint, they’re not chasing him because they don’t think he’s an AFL quality KPD. That he’s contracted and we want to keep him means we get full value, regardless of whether we selected Murray ahead of him or not.

Plus the Dogs being interested is huge. It means that being easily bring able to get the deal done becomes a big part of the pitch.

Ah Chee is basically the same age as Keays and ANB so he would not be a long term replacement for them. It's a short term top up the list move

I think Keane was better with Butts in the side.

Butts is better defensively than Murray and it allowed Keane to zone off more freely.

Once we lost some of his drive from defence our ball movement got worse.

Keane had a shocker, but had a very good year. Murray’s form wasn’t deserving of being selected ahead of an uninjured Butts.

Achee is a good player, at worst he holds Keays to a higher standard, at best, he becomes the third highest goal kicker after Thilthorpe and Fogarty.

He's a much better player than Keays - not a knock on Keays, and possibly a better player than ANB, although slightly different types of players, ANB much more of a connector, Achee an actual target player.

I'd look closely at Davies at GC. Big body, clean, an upgrade on Berry to my eyes, plus I imagine he would be very cheap to trade in.

Davies could become the big bodied inside mid that Hately was supposed to become, plus his defensive game is very good. There may be others like him available elsewhere too.

Philipou would be a massive recruit for you, but he's signed up and I doubt we'd trade him save for a top 5 pick in a good draft, Saints rate him highly far as I can tell.

Obviously Bailey would be a big recruit.

Would also look at Jy Farrar to allow Rachelle and Rankine to spend more time in the midfield.

I could see Rankine replacing Pedlar, Taylor moving into the midfield to replace Berry and then Ah Chee taking Taylor's spot.

I think that's my issue I don't think Archee free's up Rachele. I don't see Archee playing in defence or on a wing either. Neither does he replace Tex in a different forward set up.

It might take a while for our coaching staff to work it out but to me he replaces ANB or Keys.

Draper is not even in the best 10 players in the SANFL side at this stage so I’m not sure that’s going to work. Fingers crossed he can develop, but to be blunt, we haven’t drafted an AFL standard midfielder in the top 20 of an AFL draft since 2007 so forgive me for being pessimistic.

Zac Bailey is nothing more than a pipe dream. Not happening.

In an ideal world it's the latter.

Certainly Brisbane use him as the guy who goes into defence in the last few minutes of each quarter.

Billy Coetee from Norwood is quick, has good skills and is a hybrid midfielder. Hope he gets a go somewhere.

I think both those guys are still valuable contributors. I thought Taylor played his role in both games really well, and Pedlar obviously had a good game against the Pies, then struggled on Friday.

In regards to Peds. I’m still bullish about him, there’s clearly a footballer there. The guy has never got a clean run at it but IF he can have a season where he can string a good run of games together without injury, I think he will become a good player.
