I prefer he retiresOk thanks I get that and that’s what I would expect. It’s logical. Tex wont be playing 20+ games of AFL again in a season. It may be 15 with most interstate games missed (Melbourne games the possible exception)
But isn’t Tex still more of an asset to the team than Fog is? (Which is scary). Rested up he could play a role in finals. He was our best forward vs Pies and should have kicked at least 3. His influence around the club as our true spiritual leader along with coaching of young guys (if Welsh and Murray were ever going to make it having Tex mentoring is as good as you could ask for)
I reckon Tex will give it one last crack. The allure of the flag is just too great esp if we pick up another couple of first 18 players (more impactful even than the “B grade” level of talent brought in last year with the 3 mature guys). Getting Ah Chee and perhaps Petracca definitely makes us better next year.
I reckon he may play around 15 minor round games in AFL with the other 8 either completely rested or playing SANFL for a few.
That’s my prediction and also preference.
Given the midfield has been a real issue for us for a few years now, I guess we must be the itgers! For every team in the league that all do the same thing?
I would think we'll for some clubs and poorly for itgers.
You are confident in Fog to lift his output? If so, I do hope you are right.I prefer he retires

Ideally you'd have Dawson on a wing.I think we need someone like Dunkley (ie the defensive big bodymid). Feels like Dawson has taken on that role.
Given how banged up Dawson is now, feels like he doesn’t have many years left in that role
Which is why IF we manage to snag petracca they can swap between the fp and midfieldI think we need someone like Dunkley (ie the defensive big bodymid). Feels like Dawson has taken on that role.

We were short 2 quality midfielders in each final. I'm not sure how this idea helps reduce that problem.Which is why IF we manage to snag petracca they can swap between the fp and midfield
Petracca and Rankine I guessWe were short 2 quality midfielders in each final. I'm not sure how this idea helps reduce that problem.
It's not set in stone for each game but to extend both players longevityWe were short 2 quality midfielders in each final. I'm not sure how this idea helps reduce that problem.
Even without the guarantee of being in the AFL side (which no player should have anyways), if Tex wants to go around again I'd be more than happy to have him on the list vs the alternative.
Gunston would have very much been on that kind of thinking this season. Dear and Lewis injured early gave him games and he let his football do the talking from there. Tex is older but you can't predict how the season will play out where having him step straight in will see far less of a loss than whoever else we'd look to. Now we've moved him out of taking the forward ruck (I still dont really get why we did it given the goals he was able to generate from it), if he goes on, I wonder if he should be trying to get lighter to help him move a bit better - although I'm not sure it would help much in his case.
And they have completely different body types. Tex is heavy set so as he loses whatspeed he has, it becomes a liability whereas gunston is still really sharp off the mark and is a lighter buildThe difference between Tex and Gunner is that Tex controls the ball movement and commands the greatest share of entries. Gunna plays like a 3rd tall, so fits into the system. Tex is the system.
Rankine needs good inside players to be any good.Petracca and Rankine I guess
I don’t think it’s “you’re no longer best 22”, more “there is a fair chance you won’t be best 22 all year but we still rate you much higher than Burgess and need one of you on the list.”The treatment of Tex is exactly the same as Thommo, which I cannot understand. Thommo was first choice stoppage mid playing full minutes in our most important game of the year. Following the final siren it's ‘you’re not in our plans, you can play in the SANFL and we might be able to throw you a farewell game’.
Tex the same. One minute he’s the primary key forward target controlling movement in and to the forward line, following the final siren he’s only worthy of SANFL unless there’s injuries.
It’s called respect. Tex has earnt that right to make the decision himself. The club knows Tex will make the decision in the best interest of everyone, not just himself with a selfish decision.
I’m very comfortable allowing Tex to make this decision.
Given Burgess is a complete liability at AFL level I hope Tex plays on then. At least during the home and away season he could contribute to getting wins on the board and another crack at top 4.I don’t think it’s “you’re no longer best 22”, more “there is a fair chance you won’t be best 22 all year but we still rate you much higher than Burgess and need one of you on the list.”
Should be looking for a mobile, rangy KPF in trade or draft this year. You see what Brisbane are doing with Ty Gallop and Logan Morris; you see what Hawks can do with Dear / Lewis / Gunston.I’d be more reluctant to keep Tex if we didn’t have a dearth of young key forwards coming through. It’s basically just Ibis.
We could change our structure of course but I’m not sure it’s a Smith situation where we clearly had promising young talent in his role.
Sack Burgess. We need to building AFL depth, rather than worrying about our SANFL team.
Can he be our SANFL marque player?Sack Burgess.
Give Tex a rookie contract on okay dollars to play SANFL and tell him to get welsh and Murray up to afl speed.
If needed for injury or rest/rotations reasons, Tex is excellent coverage.
This scenario...
Keeps Tex employed on more dollars than he might get outside of footy.
Builds the developing forward line under an expert.
Provides the afl team flexibility to rest certain players throughout the season as needed.
Would be a flexible scenario if we get a long term injury in the afl team.
