Zac Bailey is the guy, we need to get him.

Has gone to another level this year after already proving multiple times he's a big game player and again last weekend.
My guess is he doesn't leave this year, but will be about as hot a FA target as they come next year as a 26 year old. TBH there's a reality he joins the $2M/year club if he does and has another great season.

Are we going to have 2mil available on our books though?
TBH, I don't think finding the cash is the Crows problem. Its offering the cash that seems to be the thing our team finds most difficult.

I've stayed quiet on this but it still flabbergasts me that we ended up being the low bidder for NWM. And by quite a margin if the reports are to be believed. Why we wouldn't go all chips on the table on NWM (cash wise) right now is beyond me.

The premiers are fitting Allen, Draper, and Ridley into their team whilst stacked for talent and carrying bloated contracts like Doedee's. We'll have space.
Probably why they're losing Ah Chee and Starcevich, though

I think we'll be in a good position until 2028/29, when RT/Rachele/Soligo/Curtin need new contracts

Depends if we thought we were realistically ever a chance. We were always behind Port as his preferred destination.

It happens all the time where a club offers big money and miss a player the manager's of current players come knocking looking to get some of the spare 'cash'.

We had to put something on the table but maybe didn't want to risk any fallout when we were not really in the conversation.

For me, if you're in the market for the best player in the league, you can't go in with a "lets half scramble the egg" strategy.

I don't know much about him but if we lose Butts could Laverde be a cheap break glass in case of emergency player? Just been delisted.
We're far better taking a risk on a kid than a 30 year old cast-off from a team like Essendon. We need first team players not top-ups

To me there is a real need to have a squad mentality next year and upgrade players in the reserves when they are in good form if others in the Firsts are struggling to make an impact.

We could have played McAndrew at certain times in 2025 and next year must if he is the next up likely ruckman, and if the sub goes, he could also play in the team giving ROB a much needed rest. ROB was cooked by the end of the year and this has happened most years because he rucks all of the time. McAndrews height would cause opposition rucks some concern out of the middle in particular

Billy and Bondy are others who deserved greater opportunity earlier in the year. We missed a trick playing Billy in the guts in the 2's and firsts. We should also get with the better sides and grooming Bondy as our run with mid or tagger. He can run all day, has pace and takes no prisoners with his tackling. He also gives us another midfield opinion something missing towards the end of year when our midfield ran out of gas and ideas.

We need to get Nank back in the team and play him at half back or wing where we can use his marking power, creativity and ability to evade tackles. he will make some mistakes but he takes the game on and he can give us another marking outlet from defence.

If we are playing Taylor give him some time in the midfield and let him show his skills in close and kicking ability around the ground. Get him exceptionally fit and let him be the small in there to get the ball out to outside runners.

Lets also get some greater flexibility into our team. What about playing Worrell across half back and getting the more defensively minded Butts into the team when we need to mind those sides with tall forwards. He would have been a great choice on Gunston as he is not slow and would have reduced his impact. Play Keane at CHB where has a little more freedom to attack and Murray back in the pocket on teams with 3 talls or trial him up forward with Tex unlikely to be more than a part player next year if at all. We don't have many options up forward in the talls department and he could be another possibility as could Curtin at various times.

Finally get the top ups out of the midfield and play the midfielders we drafted there eg Edwards Taylor and Billy etc.

Our bid for NWM was double what he was originally being offered by St Kilda.

Absolutely no evidence that what we bid significantly less - all three bids were high and St Kilda chose to finally come over the top with a massive offer, probably close to triple what they originally offered

Tom Morris' tweet outlined the 3 bids pretty thoroughly. If someone has debunked that since then I have missed it. But we were a long way back in total $$/year

I dunno, Brisbane aren't the only stacked club bringing in more quality. I think their willingness to let good role-players walk is because they're also in the position of having elite academy players coming through that can plug into those roles. They're so stacked for both young and mature talent that it's not comparable to RT/Rash/Soligo/Curtin IMO.

The case in point here is Dangerfield, an absolute beast in his younger days who would go at every contest.

Now he just floats around the forward line, plays about 70-75% game time and has a couple of weeks off here and there over the winter.

Curtin has the size and power, has a good turn of speed and will get better with another preseason

Edwards has the size but is he any good? I haven't seen much of him but I'm not super enamoured.

The one player I feel needs a big pre season is Zac Taylor, if he can get super fit he could move to the midfield full time and perhaps rotate with Soligo through HF/wing a bit to maintain their freshness. He has the hands, movement and the brains to not hack the ball to nowhere or hope that Darcy Moore isn't just standing there.
Danger is the perfect example of being smarter in how he plays to have longevity.

I don't think we moved off our longstanding NWM offer of $1.2M a year ......which was clearly a very strong offer 6 months ago

But the market moved, and if you believe the reports of $2M pa for 2 years ....it really was a no-brainer for him to stay

However, the 2 year term, must still leave the door open for a return home .....otherwise, he would have accepted a longer term Contract, which I'm sure St Kilda would have been pushing for

I agree with all of this, but does Nicks? History suggest no. Boy I really hope he does anything close to this.

Spot on, we have an fixation with 'continuity', which is a blind spot of people who are in the club now and seamingly people who have been involved peior. Camporeale is someone who talks about it all the time.

Teams who are well managed will be exposing players throughout the year in the squad when the time is right. Look at Curtin he was 100% ready for this year because we exposed him last year. You'd hope the same would be said of Draper next year as well. People like Edwards and mcandrew should have had game time this year.

We need a young mid that can do what young petracca did. When guys like petracca get older, to maintain longevity in the game, they need to become smarter and not necessarily go 100 percent at every contest. That style of game is extremely taxing on the body and physically they body will wear the scars.

We need a young bull that will physically intimidate the opposition and power away from stoppage.

Curtin could be that player.

So regardless of whether we get Petracca we have to invest in the midfield of the future, because he doesn't solve all our midfield problems. He's also doesn't have the best for skills, although this may change as he slows down in his later years
Unless we get lucky with a pick in the teens, or Draper cleans up his disposal it feels like we are going through this contending period without an elite young mid. Especially if we start handing out 1st round picks to get experience in

I’m not sold Curtin will ever be the CBA midfielder some on here are saying.

He’s incredibly mobile for his size but he’s still 197 cms.

Dominating marks on the wing so the team as that outlet kick with the ability to float forward or back is an incredible skill. Do we really need him/see him being in an under packs every ball up?
Need him around the ball as much as possible, he is agile and big body who can lay a good tackle with his wing span and has played as a midfielder before his growth spurt.

Laverde is cooked.
Can't recall many games where Laverde didn't make an almighty mess of things ......continually held his opponent and was pinged at least 2-3 times a match .....was terrible with his defensive positioning

ESS decided to delist him, knowing there was some interest from other Clubs ......you're spot on, Laverde is cooked mentally, and 100% of the blame is on ESS for weekly mis-matches that destroyed his confidence .....plus he's a Draft Horse now
