List Mgmt. 2025 Premiership(s) List Making and Trading

To clarify my previous post...

The 2025 AFL Draft Booklet also refers to the Long Term Injury List, which hasn't existed since 2000 - so I'm guessing they've just copy/pasted for the last 5 years and haven't updated it to reflect the reduction in list numbers which happened as a result of COVID (and never changed back).

With regards to rookie upgrades, it states the following (most of which I believe to remain accurate):
A club may apply to the AFL to transfer a player or players from its Rookie List on to its Primary List on the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the Telstra AFL Draft, or under the Long-Term Injury Rule or at any time between the Telstra AFL Draft and the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the Telstra AFL Pre- eason Draft if an uncontracted listed player was deleted from that club’s list.
Welsh is not an "uncontracted listed player" - he is a "contracted listed player", so the last clause is irrelevant. The LTI List hasn't existed for at least 5 years. So, the only clause which is relevant is the first - the date when the Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the ND.

I believe that today is the last LL prior to the ND. Thus, today is the last day for doing rookie upgrades. I am happy to be corrected, if it turns out that there is another LL between today and the ND (19-20 Nov).

From the Australian about Welsh "He would have been available as a rookie, but the Crows had already committed to taking the key forward in the national draft." Maybe they still want Stevens as Rookie and we Pass on our 3rd Selection for a RD or for a Train On for Selecting prior to Round 1

We need to take 3 in the draft, if we take 2 then we need to upgrade a rookie. We don’t have a spare spot, like last 2 years, we’re chockablock.

Not possible.

The AFL mandates that we make 3 selections in the ND (including rookie upgrades). We can't pass with our 3rd pick, as we would not meet this requirement.

As things stand, we will not have a "live" selection in the RD, and thus no ability to pre-list Stevens ahead of the RD. Our only selection in the RD will be used to re-draft Welsh.

Do we need a player like Stevens? Doesn't look too have any stand out features.

We should be targeting a genuine small forward ino
I'd have a small forward as a fairly low priority, given that we have ANB, Keays, Rankine & Rachelle who are all capable of playing the role.

For me, our priorities should be (in no particular order):
  • Tall Forward
  • Gun Midfielder
  • Ruck
Tall Forward
2026 must be Tex's last stand. That will leave us with just Fogarty, Thilthorpe and Maley as the only tall forwards on our list - and Maley only has a 12 month contract. We are desperately short on depth in this position.

Gun Midfielder
Self explanatory. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll be uncovering one this year given the lateness of our draft picks.

Ruck
We re-signed O'Brien, only for the AFL to change the ruck rules, effectively negating his greatest strength. Not ideal. Our only depth in this position is McAndrew and Maley. I've been calling for us to draft a development ruck every draft for the last 4 years.

Surely this is the year that they stop drafting mediocre mids & half-back flankers, and address a real need?

Toby Murray is a tall forward/ruck the same as Maley.

And I disagree re a genuine small pressure forward as well as a need, with a big emphasis on pressure.

A really speedy small forward that provides pressure and is a goal sneak would be very handy.

From what I've seen, Stevens didn't look likely to go in the main draft. Haven't heard much fanfare either. Us not having a free rookie spot might see him go undrafted.
He did get a Vic state Combine invite (and performed surprisingly well re his speed) so there must have been at least 3 clubs that wanted a look at his athletic testing.

Yeah, he is definitely a prospect, just not been much noise around him. I actually like him for the record. Could very well get drafted but there's always some that go to the State combines that don't.

Fair enough, thought you and he were very much tongue in cheek.
Your work is paramount and very highly regarded in the rookie space afaiac as you know .

Mate, Wayne's a flog.
For some reason I kinda have a soft spot for him, but hes still a flog, and Im pretty sure he knows/revels in the fact that he is just that.

He probably laughs more at someone championing his cause than he does the rest of us whom he seems to troll for kicks with his maverick, independent thoughts and opinions.

I think people have already responded to this, but I think we've sorely lacked a decent full time fast pressure forward for a long time. Even if not that quick bit still clever with pressure like stengle.

I don't think we want Rankine playing full time small forward and it would be good to have someone to compliment Rachelle, who I wouldn't exactly call a pressure forward.

Harry was training with the boys recently (yesterday?). I guess it was an unofficial session and he was just tagging along.

I believe under the new CBA, first year to fourth year players are not allowed to return to the club until December 7th and then everyone else on January 6th.

Eddie Betts was the last one .....Murphy an attempt to be one, just shows how desperate we are

IIRC the stats showed, we didn't do a good job retaining the ball in the FWD line this year ......if we have 3 x talls, then a genuine pressure / goal kicking fwd is a must

Surely senior players have to return to training before the new year?

Was previously two weeks after the year 1-4 players.

I have this feeling that date I posted the other day was just a guide.

I have previously read that first to fourth year players return during November and the rest of the playing list are required to return during the first week of January, but I believe they can return whenever they like. No one is stopping them.

And I don’t think it really matters as every player has a fairly intense off season running program they must meet. I was listening to Max Gawn on Triple M a few weeks ago and he was describing his off season activities and how much running he was required to do. He said he was running close to 10 km every day as part of his off season program. He said the main running program is done in October and November and when the squad returns, the footballs come out and skills and game plan are implemented.
