I'd extend that

Priority 1 is Sid AND Charlie Edwards' preseasons - get Edwards into the midfield rotations and lets see how he hits the ground next year - he could be like a new top end recruit for us if he can step up
Only problem will be fitting them into the 22. And that when finals come around again they'll have no experience.

Assume we get Oliver + Ah Chee

2026 Best 23

FB: Worrell ~ Murray ~ Michalanney
HB: Milera ~ Keane ~ Hinge
C: Curtin ~ Oliver ~ Cumming
R: O'Brien ~ Rankine ~ Dawson
HF: Rachele ~ Fogarty ~ Ah Chee
FF: Keays ~ Thilthorpe ~ Walker
B: Peatling ~ Soligo ~ ANB ~ Draper ~ Laird

Edwards, Cook, Nankervis, Pedlar, Dowling, Bond, maybe Hollands..

I think after last night there are plenty of spots up for grabs

For next year? - if they are both integrated into the main side very early, they will have a full year of gametime and if that means they push others out that are not performing, all the better. As for finals, by then we will have had most of the side having 2 or 3 finals this year so a couple without that experience that may be young and playing at a high level won't worry me. Someone said once -- you'll never win anything with kids....he was wrong

Hope you're right.
As poster above says. Hinge and Keays were glaringly bad, and Brisbane may have seen it a long time ago.

Edwards and Draper could be the answer to those two (Pedlar taking the forward spot).

You don't become minor premier if most of the side can't play.
Let's see how they respond in the semi.

Hinge on thin ice.
Any of the others our squad doesn't really have better options.

If you can't perform in finals, no player should be off limits.

Willing to give our best players another chance, but many others are not as essential as they would like to think.

Issue will be contracts though. You have to back the right players in. Cumming and Peatling come to mind - we've spent a lot on them.

Not having Rankine and Rachele out there makes a big difference.

Add those 2 and Oliver + Ah Chee we look like a far better side, let alone without adding someone like Sid Draper after a strong preseason as well as more natural progression from Curtin.

I think we are genuinely in a good place when you look at the bigger picture. Finals was the bare minimum this year and we happened to finish top and earn 2 home finals. I think as long as we win one, the prelim is the bonus for this team where its at now for experience. Its a free hit in terms of while you want to make every opportunity count, for a list with a younger profile bar a couple of elder statesmen, its heading in the right direction for we hope a sustained push for finals in the coming years.

As you say we can then start to look at players that did / didn't stand up in finals and make appropriate list decisions and match day decisions going forward

I'll be bitterly disappointed if we lose the semi, after beating both GWS and Hawks in the regular season.

We have three high quality players we can add to the team that played last night that should improve us

Rankine, Rachele, Draper

That's of course assuming Draper is good, but he's a pick 4, and we aren't getting one of those again any time soon

Beyond that we are holding onto a lot of depth types and not a lot of 'improving the best 22' types

Jones (no), Murphy (no), Schoenberg (no), Sholl (no), Burgess (no), Borlase (no), Cook (probably not), Dowling (seems more a sidegrade), Nankervis (fell off), Edwards (maybe but he hasn't gotten a game in 2 years), Ryan (similar), Welsh (unlikely), T. Murray (maybe if we're lucky), McAndrew (seems depth only)

That's 14 players in the squad that most likely aren't going to materially improve our chances of becoming a premiership winner outside of swapping around fringe role players.

I'd love for guys like Edwards, Dowling, Nankervis to become the answer, but each year they don't cement their spot, it becomes less likely. Nankervis will be a 5th year player next season, Dowling a 4th year, and are way off even 50 games.

Are three quality additions to last night's team enough? I don't think so. Need to either massively develop players like Edwards into quality best 22 inclusions, or go to the trade table. We're not finding quality at the draft with the pick we'll have this year

BINGO. At last someone has seen it. For me it was all about being a finalist. That's all. Who in their right mind would have predicted we finish top after the minor round. The next thing this club has to do is to become a frequent finalist and once or twice hit the big time. We need to become destination club with a powerful following.

Have posted it previously, decent mail from one of the 2 i know who are affiliated within the club - this one is from the "better" of the 2. Think Rankine , selection mail etc...

Oliver wants out, Dees want his wage off the books

We have been into him before, he played his best footy under Burgess' fitness regime, wants this again.
ANB been into him talking the club up

Sticking point will be % agreed on that Melbourne will pick up of his contract

He is only 28 too, still at least 4 good years in him
I think Oliver (putting aside drug and other off-field issues) is the prototype for the type of one-paced, low damage midfield accumulator that the game has gone past in recent years (think Tom Mitchell, Crouch, etc). I would be very disappointed if we sought to invest any meaningful amount of either trade capital or salary cap on him as the risks (fitness, form, character, type of player) are simply too great. If we’ve got two first rounders to throw around then try and get Dyson Sharp - much better bet for my money.

Losing games like last night doesn't help though. It just reinforces the club doesn't know how to win flags.

Short memory here I think - Oliver was the definition of high impact player at his peak.
Start of 2023 he was clearly the best player in the league.

What does this mean?

Based on yesterday you would immediately delist FOG, Cumming, Peatling, TT, Berry, Hinge, Milera, Keys, Murray, Taylor and Bond. TT would be on thin ice.

Let's be realistic here. Going on the stars in their side combined with finals experience we were the hunted and not the hunter. We wont improve without more finals. As well as that the stupid coaching panel deciding to flurt with puting Max in the middle which disrupted everyone else in there.

Last I looked we still have another final at least to come this year. Cool the jets and lets see how these guys respond and then take a measured look at it

Like Hawthorn, need that extra mid. They aren’t exactly attainable, but all you can do is try. If you get Ah Chee, at least that can free up a bit more of Rachele or Rankine on ball.

Have a couple of handy young players in Draper and Curtin to develop too. Your club’s in a very good place, time to keep pushing and capitalise 👍

Unfair on Keays. Fair on Hinge.

Keays has kicked 35 goals this year. Easily best 22 this year and next.

If we are going on just last night you may as well just burn the list to the ground.
We need blokes that will take us further in finals, not pad out scores against weaker sides. A ruthless side would trade Keays.
