I wonder if the whole work rate knock on Welsh is a bit overblown and he's just not good enough.

Kicked bags in junior footy monstering kids, doesn't have the size to do that at the next level or the versatility/tricks to be anything other than a lead, mark, kick dinosaur style full forward. Has some explosive speed but doesn't really have the craft to use it. Would kick a million goals in country footy.

He came back from a medium term injury this year looking in physically really good nick and still couldn't get a kick.

I feel a bit sorry for him when I read some of the comments on here because I'm just not sure I see an AFL standard talent there.

Could be. Obviously plenty of exceptions but Father Sons are generally more overrated than not in junior football in my experience. People recognise the name so talk about them.

Welsh obviously had the goals in juniors but as you say he is a bit of a nothing player.

Many talk down SANFL football on here but it's still a tough standard and you need a certain amount of professionalism to make it. I don't think he has that and he will end up doing the country circut kicking goals in lower leagues

It is what it is but i still think both cook and sholl have had more than enough time to prove themselves welsh is only 19 this maybe the push he needs we shall see but those 2 others must be on thin ice
Reasoning is likely the club see Sholl and Cook as being more likely to produce at AFL level if called upon than Welsh.

For all his faults, Sholl is a capable AFL player.

He just doesn't fit our contest heavy, grinding style. Should have been traded to a club that could use a purely outside player.

Cal Twomey posted a list of F/S nominations to Twitter yesterday and Mitch Stevens wasn't among the list. Of course we could come in with the paperwork at the last minute
Interesting... I was going to suggest that we may choose to nominate him for the RD only (with the nomination date for that being later), then I realised that we won't have any rookie list positions available.

Given that the AFC have delisted Welsh, with the stated intention of re-drafting him in the RD, as far as Stevens is concerned it's ND or bust. Presumably, they don't rate him highly enough to take him with one of our ND selections.

As for "coming in with the paperwork at the last minute"... The AFL's 2025 Telstra AFL Draft Booklet (attached) states that F/S and Academy Bidding Nominations have to be lodged by today. This is for the ND. Clubs have until Friday 21st November to pre-select F/S players ahead of the RD. As noted above, we won't have a rookie list vacancy, so will be unable to pre-list him ahead of the RD.

So... the deadline for nominating Stevens under the F/S rule is today. However, I don't know what time nominations close today (4pm would be my guess - but it's only a guess).

Smart call on Welsh - he’s a little way off AFL selection, takes key forwards more time

Wonder if this means we are confident in getting pick 9 or have we targeted a DFA?

This would indicate the opposite, in that we don't want to give Welsh that time and have him firmly in the gun to delist at the end of next year.

The kid has got to get his shit together and fast.

Those in the club will tell you that he still has a problem with his attitude/approach to the game. That doesn’t meant you are wrong. He might not be good enough regardless.

Said it before, if he doesn't come back to training looking like prime McLeod then he's a fool and his career will be a short one.

A little way off AFL?

On anything he's produced at SANFL there's a chasm between what he's shown and AFL.

You think he's a key forward?

Only hope I see for him at this point is as 3rd tall something like Jake Stringer but he's a mile off that currently

Saw him in an u18 state game and it was abundantly clear he wasn’t up to it. Kicked a couple but just didn’t have what’s required.

It's possible we will elevate a rookie to the main list to free up a rookie spot, instead of using a pick at the national draft

Possible, but highly unlikely. Our remaining rookies are Turray, Borlase and McAndrew. I don't see any reason to think we'd be upgrading any of them. None are getting close to timing out on the rookie list, or demanding to be upgraded by becoming regular members of our best 22. The only reason to upgrade any of them is list shenanigans, and there doesn't seem to be any need for that either.

Given that we have a full hand of draft picks to use, to the extent that we're looking to trade away excess picks (rather than forfeiting them), it seems unlikely that we'd be going down that path.

I'm not sure what date Rookie Upgrades had/have to be done by. The AFL Draft Booklet lists a number of critical dates, but rooke upgrades is not one of them.

I believe that today is the last List Lodgement date before the ND. My understanding is that today's LL finalises the team lists prior to the ND, and therefore the number of draft picks they are able to use in the ND. Thus, it seems logical that today's LL would be the last opportunity to upgrade players from the rookie list.

I am not 100% certain about this! Unfortunately, the AFL's publicly released documentation is not very helpful this year.

Don't you just love it when the AFL's own documentation contradicts itself?!

Consider the number of Category B rookies that clubs are allowed to have on their lists:
  • According to the 2025 AFL Rules document (Appendix 1, on pg 187), clubs can have 0-2 Cat B rookies.
  • According to the 2025 Telstra AFL Draft Booklet, "each Club may include a maximum of three extra players on its Rookie List".
So which is it? 2 (according to the AFL Rules) or 3 (according to the Draft Booklet)? Your guess is as good as mine!

It is remarkable how often the AFL's publicly available documentation contradicts itself, or fails to reflect rule changes which were implemented years ago (e.g. Long Term Injury list vs Inactive List, Father/Daughter rule).
