Historically none of those phantom drafts have a clue but i like it his old man was a great talent who got hurt by injuriesSo what do you think about our !st pick being Mitch Marsh as the media with Phantom Drafts have group think as Pick 21
What's ironic? You said something a bit dumb and a whole bunch of posters pointed it out.Clubs are moving up the order by doing deals with other rubbish clubs, not ones expected to finish high on the ladder.
Ironic first sentence.
You know why they are trading out though surely? What's ironic? You said something a bit dumb and a whole bunch of posters pointed it out.
FFS, Carlton has been desperate to trade their picks, and the very best offer they got for 11 was 25 and a F2. Multiple sides are trying to trade out of this year, and there's no buyers.

Correct, two lots of F/S reasons really.Don’t Carlton have F/S reasons for trading out though? Who else wants to trade out?
This the least I've ever seen our board talk about draft picks. Probably the last interested I've been as well. Didn't watch any u18 games this yearSo what do you think about our !st pick being Mitch Marsh as the media with Phantom Drafts have group think as Pick 21
It’s certainly a year when it not only makes sense, but is entirely possible to move up. Carlton x 2, Hawthorn, GC, GWS and Brisbane have all indicated they would like to trade their 1sts out of this year. I’ve never seen a buyers market like this and instead we are apparently actually planning on trading out our second pick this year for a F3.

Yes, they do definately happen for a reason. However, while it’s a weak draft, it is a draft that is heavily biased towards SA talent. The question is, does a good SA draft, as well as other clubs wanting to trade out mean we should be taking advantage, or should we be like the other 17 clubs and sit it out?Buyers markets in drafts happen for a reason, that being, it's a rather nothing crop

35 years in business makes me see it as an opportunity, however everyone obviously has their own views. The discussion was more about a poster suggesting that we aren’t doing anything to move up because we don’t have the collateral, which is clearly not true.

I usually tend to agree about targeting local talent, however the other side of this is that so much media attention originates from Victoria that I’ve come to believe that our kids get overly discounted because of it. For example, if this years SA under 18 side was Vic Metro, and had gone undefeated, then I absolutely believe that this draft would receive more hype.I don't think players from SA really makes a difference in this discussion. Ultimately to trade up in the first round, you need to have someone in mind which fixes a looming list problem, and all the better if they're South Australian. Later on its just where the cards fall that determine if you're moving.
Whilst I think Sharp probably fits that bill (and considering the smoke has been if we are to trade up, it's for Dyson), I also doubt you'll look back on the decision to trade up to Sharp too fondly. The league has been turning that kind of clearance first brutes who aren't quick/damaging with ball in hand into niche players (and the strike rate for these type of one safe picks has been somewhat underwhelming in recent years).
Dont get the Pickett hype myself.I usually tend to agree about targeting local talent, however the other side of this is that so much media attention originates from Victoria that I’ve come to believe that our kids get overly discounted because of it. Guys like Blake Oudshorn-Bennier, Matt Leray and Jed Dahlitz all have A grade disposal and have had great years, but simply don’t get mentioned.
Latrelle Pickett seems absolutely perfect for us btw, and someone we could clearly get if we wanted. He would allow, Rankine, Rachelle and even Pedlar to spend more time in the midfield, he gives us raw pace that we lack, and he provides defensive pressure from our forward line which was so lacking this year. He is also 20 and on a steep trajectory which means we don’t know how good he can be once in a professional system, but also means he should be able to contribute next year.
Because 12 months earlier he was mucking around in Lincoln playing footy occasionally and went to kicking 4 goals on league debut for Glenelg. His agility is off the charts and he clearly has innate goal sense, but his acceleration is also very dynamic. He would immediately be the fastest player in our side. He also has never done any professional pre seasons except half of 1 this year with the Bays, so who really knows what he can be.Dont get the Pickett hype myself.
He might turn out fantastic, but he's a 20yo SANFL Reserves footballer.
Will he respond to structure because we are system focusedBecause 12 months earlier he was mucking around in Lincoln playing footy occasionally and went to kicking 4 goals on league debut for Glenelg. Definitely boom or bust, but I feel with our current list, those gambles are worth taking. I also feel that we are currently over reliant on Rankine and Rachelle, and having them both out last year hurt both our midfield AND our goal scoring ability. Two things that will not be helped in the slightest if we take Mitch Marsh.
Doesn’t look like he will be there at 16 so would need to trade up with GWS I would imagine. As for systems. Look I personally think we are too system based sometimes, and players like Rankine and Rachelle could be even better with a touch more freedom, however I would say that if they can buy in, then anyone could. Will he respond to structure because we are system focused
What pick are you using?

Need this updated as Welsh not on list. So four open spots
Because Cal Twomey and many others have stated on multiple occasions that GWS and Hawthorn are looking to move back or even into next year. That means that picks 9, 10, 11 and 12 (as well as GC & Bris at 15 & 18) have been, or are still, available. That’s not me wishing, that’s been reported multiple times by multiple sources. And who says GWS want to do that.
Its all well and good to say "We aren't going hard enough for SA kids" when youve got little idea as to whether we tried or not.
Agreed, however there is different levels of system based. I’m perfectly happy with our game plan, however decisions like starting Rachelle as sub in the last game, because that’s how we always bring back injured players, is taking it way too far. And all great sides have their Rankines, Dusty’s or Stevie J’s who create havoc by going off script. Trying to totally coach that out of them will not help the side in the long term. There has to be a balance. All AFL clubs are system based though. Maybe a bit more obvious with us but you have to be. You get killed on turnover against the good teams.
