Very, very disappointing loss. We looked fairly listless and woefully unprepared in the second half. Against a team of 15 yr olds and a couple of their Dads, we were the ones who had poor skill execution, basic skill errors everywhere, fumbles, dropped marks, SLIPPING OVER CONSTANTLY FMD THE SLIPS, missed tackles, getting caught over the back and something I haven't seen mentioned too much and some poor goal kicking. Bad goal kicking is bad football, and if we kick straight we still win that game, despite all the other faults.

What was perhaps more concerning than the skill errors, slips and fumbles was that just about every expirment/structural change was a failure. Haynes looks fried, Williams up forward looked like a defender playing forward, Kemp looked lost and only looked into the game when his athleticism got him involved, SOS needed to be thrown back forward (he wasn't bad, just the forwardline was so bad he had to go back home).

Also, whoevers genius idea it was to throw Cripps into the ruck for a substantial amount of time should be sacked on the spot. Sure, once a game now and then for 3 minutes to break a tag, but not bulk minutes in the ruck against Nankervis of all people ffs.

The players would take those marks and hit those handballs 100 times out of 100 at training. It's not a lack of basic skills, it's deer-in-the-headlights panic at the pressure Richmond were putting on. Which has been the case for years with this team.

It seems to me that Voss has been unable to simulate this kind of pressure during training, because surely if you actually trained with it the players wouldn't panic so badly each time it happens.

Okay, this is good approach and starting point

It's difficult to emulate real games at training or practice matches

We saw last week with the Pies, if you pressure is low or can't combat opposition pressure, you won't get a positive outcome

To me, this is the starting point of the modern game, pressure. This also is shared responsibility.

Players with high footy IQ adapt and drive on field standards to drive the collective group. Coaches need to act quicker with messaging to either take the heat out of the game and or make tactical change to increase pressure levels

Not one player was was responsible for our lack of intent, not one coach, it's a collective approach

Ultimately, it rests on the coach to change his mindset and approach, to change player buy in

If you or anyone thinks that a basic uncontested mark, or a simple handball is the responsibility of an AFL coach, we will end up sacking anyone that walks in the door

100%.

last night had nothing to do with the coaches and 100% to do with the players. Skills were fine in the first half.

They did not play the second half (as a team) like they did the first and i’m going to give the high performance team the benefit of the doubt here and assume the players are fit so that leaves it as mentally weak.

They appeared to come back and accept what Richmond threw at them and then panicked as they got closer.

There were many crap plays last night, but almost none pissed me off more than this

Burnt 2 players to kick long for a 2 on 2. A good team hits the lead up player 10/10 times, which is why we’re no where near it.
and SAAD who consistently kicked over the head of our players directly to a Richmond one

Some interesting numbers around workrate compared to the same time last year, but too early to tell

But, how do you analyse raw numbers when it comes to commitment

Happens all the time. I said this many times last year. I am tired of going to games, watching a player run through the middle and BOMB it instead of hitting players that are in space on their own

I just don't get it

It was a bad sign when Williams toe kicked that goal and carried on so much afterwards... instead of just getting ready for the next centre bounce...

They thought it was all going to be easy...

Like I said...groundhog day again...

This is one small area we could fix immediately.

This team has no right to be strutting around - particularly Williams.

If I'm Voss and/or Cripps I would be saying no showboating from here on in.

We kick a goal, pat the guy on the back, run back to the centre, get in position. Show teams we mean business and not getting ahead of ourselves (although how this team can get ahead of themselves with their record is beyond me).

You have players working on goal celebrations during the week for god sake.

It might seem trivial but maybe sets a tone and we do something different to other teams.

Exactly. The skills are there

So why do you think we keep dropping away? Is that skills or coaching/culture

We have got to stop pandering to the woke political agenda that we seem to have fallen for and concentrate on playing football.

Yes, there is a lot messed up with the world and it’s good to bring some of that stuff into the spotlight, but let’s leave that up to the politicians and the organisations that are setup to do that .. not a football club.

They are paid to play football .. not advocate for causes that give us an extra 5 percent of supporters each year.

Last night has nothing to do with woke.

Other than I wish the team woke up after half-time...

What did I say before the game? Probably the worst forward line I have seen in 30 years.

You just can't win games without forwards.
Tall forward didn’t have much hope after quarter time … the way we moved the bal forward. Skills and composure totally absent.
Small forwards are the worst in the league, nothing we can do about that until the end of the season unfortunately.

I'm trying my best to not cry myself back to bed..so here's another positive.

Lachie Cowan was very good. One of the few who can hold their heads up.

18 touches
6 intercepts
1 nice goal.

Kid almost seems alien to me. A young player who is developing as he should and doesn't get shaken like his teamates by 18 year old boy pressure.

Hard to do but commitment, intent, desire whatever label you want to give it only has to drop a tiny bit at professional level and talent alone wont make up for it.

I actually feel sorry for Voss, he has consistently said over a long period of time now that we (read the players) have to stay more consistent for longer. Well the players as a collective (even though a small few did actually do it) basically shat on him last night.

Coaches need to DRILL it into our players - if you see a FREE player in our forward line get it to them.
It doesn't matter if it's not Harry or Charlie. Just get it to them for God's sake.
