What is a forward in the team for though?

He's the second best in the league at kicking goals and has the best conversion rate of anyone in the conversation by quite a margin. Why is it relevant whether he had an couple of touches on the wing or a handful of hitouts.

But he is not so far ahead of others in terms of goals to be that significant.

Comparing him to Thilthorpe, he averages significantly lower numbers in marks, goal assists and score involvements. All areas that are crucial for a key forward.

If King was averaging 4 goals a game your point would be valid, but he isn’t.

If he kicks his season average vs Essendon on Wednesday he'll be 10+ in front of Thilthorpe which is stretching the gap a fair bit
Thillthorpe is the pick of the bunch for mine. If he kicks 10. Id consider for the 3rd

Also it is not a stat that exists but I really wish "effective metres gained" was a stat, where they count the metres gained from effective disposals only. I think that would tell us so much more about a player than the simple disposal numbers, or the disposal efficiency numbers as well.

They do track effective metres gained, they just don't release it publicly. Currently Karl Amon leads the league in effective metres gained at 500m per game.

I haven't tracked his entire season, but every time I see Brissy play, Harris Andrews has such a huge influence on the game

Bloke is an incredible player

I really do not understand this as the AFL owns the majority of Champion Data, and getting more fan engagement with the stats can only be a good thing, so why don't the AFL just release all the data that Champion Data make so us fans can have better and more detailed conversations.

It comes down to money

Ben King is in the mix and deserves to be in the squad. Finishing 2nd in the Coleman is absolutely noteworthy (and makes him close). However, I'd be a little disappointed if he was given the 3rd tall spot, even if he did kick 10. If he kicked 10, it would move his goal average to be equal with Jack Gunston (with whom he is currently tied on goals from 2 extra games). However, Gunston has nearly triple the assists, way more score involvements, way more of the ball, way more marks, double the tackles, more than double the inside 50's, more than double the metres gained, etc, etc (Gunston is also much more suited to a 3rd tall spot than King). Gunston is also involved in over 32% of Hawthorn's scores (the highest of any of the contenders, including Cameron) whilst Ben King is at 20%.

Thilthorpe, as you say, has been dominant all over the ground and then goes forward to impact to great effect, whilst helping put in the ruck. Also helps he plays for the minor premiers. It's not "a couple more possessions on the wing" (as the other guy said) - RT gets twice as much of the ball, way more marks, contested marks, assists, score involvements, contested possessions, metres gained, etc and still has 55 goals. RT has 60 Coaches votes to King's 16, which feels about right. If King has a massive day out and ends up with 15+ more goals than Thilthorpe then maaaybe they might decide to put RT on the bench as the flexible forward/2nd ruck to fit them both in (ala Jarryd Roughead back in the day) but I doubt it.

For me, the tall forwards pick themselves. Cameron, Thilthorpe and Gunston. Naughton next in line and King after that (both squad).

Harris Andrews easy lock for FB. Surely

Thats my team

Just putting it out there no Hawthorn defenders? We are one of the best defences in the comp.

Battle, Amon and Impey all should be in the discussion for the 40.

It doesn't always work like that.

Hawthorn will very likely finish 3rd for points conceded.

Geelong will finish 4th but there is nobody really in contention. Sometimes it just works out that 6 or 7 players doing a good job equals a better defence than teams who rely heavily on a couple.

Similar for Freo, Clark the only one in contention, the rest just an excellent team unit.

Key forward are also about forming structure and transition up the ground

Gawn about to be selected for the 8th time and joins some legends of the game.

Very little argument against him being the greatest ruckman of all time.

The only weakness is goal-kicking. If he had that, he would be close to the greatest player of all time.

Other than him not being as important to the game as Polly Farmer or as good a ruckman as Simon Madden.

The question is whether he is better than Cox. And the answer to that would be yes.

Madden a better player but I'd argue Gawn is a better ruckman.

Madden spent a lot of time resting forward taking hangers. But yes, I appreciate your view.

Squad for us is Bont, Richards, Naughton and Dale.

Team will be Bont and Richards.

Edit: Bont making his 7th All Australian is nuts. Special.

Can't wait for the Fadgelow POWER rankings.
Be patient, they're coming 😀

Though it is very tight at the top, and the order will inevitably change throughout the finals series.

Need to wait for the GC v. Bombers game to finalise.

Rowell and Anderson didn't do their prospects any favours with meh games against Port when top 4 was on the line...

No Dogs except Bont please
You do realise that depending on the GC game tomorrow, you'll finish in an equal or potentially worse ladder position than last year, despite recruiting Battle & Barrass.

Making top 4 is tough, I'd argue the Hawks have underachieved this year, as much as the Dogs.
