That was nice. I’ll take it.

Though I just went back through the entire twitter feed for the game and apparently we were gifted the game by the shockingly biased umpiring to judge from the constant stream of complaints by the Carlton fans.

And it’s true. The umpires were really helping us out & dragging Carlton down. The final free kick count was… checks notes… 26-14 to Carlton.
🤦‍♂️

Sitting here at Tullamarine, enjoying a celebratory drink, and life in general.🙂

How many times have I been here after a loss, usually a bad one, just wanting to get the h*** out of the place?

Although, the barman charged me $16.23 for a rum-and-coke😲. He must be a Blues supporter😝!

The experience of Whitfield and Toby in the middle was a point of difference. Wehr did an ok job covering. Thomas losses no admirers. The tall forwards did a nice job on rotation. Cadman at least kept competing after a bad first half. Fonti and Angove looking more comfortable at this level
Blues supporters in my area were very respectful overall.
More than a few cheerful GWS supporters floating around Docklands tonight.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but having Aleer as third tall and Himmelberg on the wing worked really well today. Would love to see this combo more often (especially if it helps keep Aleer)
Aleer is a much better one on one defensive player than HH.

Bedford v Cripps midfield battle
Disposals -14 (11-25)
Tackles +2 (9-7)
Scoring -7 (0-7)
PA + 11 (28-11)
CM -2 (0-2)
Clearances -7 (1-8)
I50 -3 (0-3)
CBA even (25-25)
Centre clearances -2 (1-4)
T50 -1 (1-2)

Bedfords output is good for a small forward but terrible for a mid. When the big dogs come back leave XO in the midfield. Getting smashed in the midfield and inside 50’s is not sustainable

Just finished watching the replay which I could do a bit more analytically than emotionally. Particularly keeping an eye on the youngsters. My take-aways…

I love Cody Angove. He is a find and should be getting a rising star nom soon.
Harvey Thomas is underrated. So good in little ways that don’t necessarily catch the eye.
Joe Fonti is going to be some sort of player. He has composure & moves almost as silkily as Josh Kelly
Jacob Wher is a really solid player. I can see why he hasn’t missed a game this year. Nothing fancy but gets the job done.
Darcy Jones just never gives up. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th efforts - chef’s kiss.
Harry on the wing works
XO was super solid today. Really establishing himself as clear 22, not as fringe as previous seasons.

And what can you say about Uncle Toby. Everybody hates him and everybody wants him at their club.

Mrs Noodle wants me to add that Cal Ward is just class “he’s granddad now but he settles us”

A solid win, but one which I fear allows the coach and match committee to keep the blinkers on in respect of where we are underperforming.

Keiren Briggs had his best game for several weeks, which helped patch up our midfield deficiencies in the clearance contest, while Toby turned the clock back with his 6 clearances, but we still lost the clearance battle by 4. We lost the contested possessions battle by 38, so while we can temporarily bat guys like Toby and Lachie Whitfield in midfield roles and it will sometimes come off, against stronger teams than Carlton it likely won't.

We also lost the inside 50 count again (significantly). We have such a brilliant defensive line, and our forward line fired today (Jesse Hogan getting such huge value for his shots on goal, having kicked 30.6 for the year, is a major reason for our forward efficiency) to overcome that - but we often can't.

I hear and see the stats and arguments on Toby Bedford operating in the midfield, and while I don't agree with everything, I do agree it's part of the problem. Against the right player he is effective, but less so with the size mismatch against Cripps, and he doesn't get enough ball out of his role. I am still baffled that we didn't put Rowsten into the team proper and can only assume that the coach doesn't have faith in him to do the job. But the existing team isn't doing the job in the midfield, and we will lose to many teams if we don't improve our play there.

Unpopular opinion. I50 counts are overrated.
If you go in effectively and score it comes back out no repeat 50's.
If you don't score you might have 3 or repeats but it is essentially the same opportunity.
Good win.
Toby was great today. 13 score involvements!

Sometimes that's true, and sometimes it's not.

A team that's inefficient or ineffective in converting I50s into goals; then I'd agree.

But it can also be indicative of the opponent's midfield being unable to prevent I50s, and against a team that is efficient, it will lead to losses because it does allow ample scoring opportunities.

My point being, we regularly lose the clearance count, the contested possession count and the I50 count. And we've lost 4 of our last 6 games. These things are linked. Just because we won this game and the Cats game (while both great wins in themselves) doesn't mean the team is playing well in certain facets of the game.

I agree the team is not playing well and some individual performances are getting us across the line. Carlton rebounded out of our F50 with ease and other teams have done the same. Our mids and half backs really don't zone/press up well at all. This could be a by-product of the game plan, running fwd in numbers causes too many to be physically spent and too far out of position to defend when it turns over. We need to better at choosing when to play all out attack and when to play positional. On current form we are fighting for a 6-8th position and I'm unconvinced the players currently out will make us top 4. If we are going to concede the midfield battle and base our scoring on rebound I think our defensive press needs to be better and also our kick out tactics.

We need to man the mark. Too much zone defence in my view. Daniels and Kelly will help alot, assuming they are at least 95% as good as normal.
We must , must pick our best 22. Ignore draft pick , longevity at club etc ( except maybe to be the sub).
