2025 Round 12 - GWS Giants vs Richmond, 4:15pm Saturday 31 May, Engie Stadium

We are back home for another attempt to stay relevant and in the 8 in 2025.
Round 9 - Player milestone game, an undermanned squad played away and played their hearts out to snatch a great win.
Round 10 - Undermanned squad played at home and spudded it up.
Round 11 - Player milestone game, an even more undermanned squad played away and played well enough to earn a great win.
Round 12 - TBC...

The Oppo: The Tigers have been showing rapid improvement with young players and older heads combining into a competitive team.
Their supporters are thinking this is another winnable game for them and could turn out in reasonable numbers.
A few teams have been caught out by their bursts of brilliance and ability to hang into games. We'll need to perform and expect a bit of Taranto and Hopper influence.

GWS GIANTS: The goalkicking talent and backline resilience are keeping us in games longer than we sometimes deserve.
The positional changes of Himmelberg to the wing, Whitfield at clearances, Ward and Greene at many CBAs along with an improved XOH and the ultra-dynamic Jones are a midfield band-aid that is a small improvement on previous performances. Kingsley obviously feels it is more system than personnel - despite having our first choice players on the injury list.
Callum Brown is quietly playing very good footy and has found his mojo again.
Aleer settled after the 1st quarter and showed he belongs at this level. Defends, marks, runs and rebounds as a perfect addition to our backline rotation. It feels like Riccardi has finally grasped his role (thanks to Keeffe for showing the way) and is both versatile and dangerous. Briggs looked far more energetic and physical - another encouraging sign. Toby is just TFG and that's all there is to it.

With Callaghan, Cogs, Daniels and most likely Kelly unavailable, our already underwhelming centre clearance and general clearance work is in full spotlight. This leads to a mountain of opposition i50s to defend and the need to score 90+ points each week to have a chance. Whether this can be sustained for at least another month is the big question. Some of the more tactical teams will gladly make the game a defensive slog to gain further advantage.

Who's out: No injuries reported as yet, so let's look at form. Rowston as sub, unfortunately, only had a handful of minutes at the end of the game and didn't have any real impact. Could be unlucky and miss out. Angove showed a lot, but we know that young players often need resting during a season. Cadman is still a WIP. Beaten for too long in the first half, he worked his way back into it. Kinger's loves him, so he'll line up again.

Who's in: If McMullin is fit, he is most likely to get straight back in. Kelly was listed at 1-2 weeks - so the medical staff may be conservative. Ough had another good day in the VFL, so I'll mention him again.

A possible line-up:

FB [39] Connor Idun, [15] Sam Taylor, [21] Leek Aleer
HB [6] Lachie Whitfield, [44] Jack Buckley, [7] Lachie Ash
C [27] Harry Himmelberg, [8] Callan Ward, [10] Jacob Wehr
HF [2] Darcy Jones, [5] Aaron Cadman, [4] Toby Greene
FF [46] Callum Brown, [23] Jesse Hogan, [1] Harvey Thomas

FOL [32] Kieran Briggs, [12] Tom Green, [14] Toby Bedford

IC from [37] Joe Fonti, [33] Xavier O'Halloran, [26] Jake Riccardi, [29] Cody Angove, [31] Toby McMullin

Home supporters should be buoyed after last week and can give Tobe's another cheer in his 251st. Tiger's supporters are usually well represented and we hope to have a great day at the footy this Saturday.

Go Giants!

I am just about to disappear for three weeks, so my advice, Giants, is to get as much percentage as you can in the next two rounds, then throw everything including the kitchen sink at Brisbane.

I'm back for the Suns in Round 15 and expecting us to be 9-5. I'll leave it to GS to get everyone sorted.

Go the mighty Giants!

I’ve finally bit the bullet and booked flights for that game! I’m so pumped. First time going over to Sydney to watch a game!

As for this one, I’d go unchanged. Reward the guys. I liked Aleer which meant HH could push further up the ground.

Jack Ough - after a week off, either injured or sore (depends on which report you believe) - had 12 tackles and 5 clearances (the latter an equal high alongside the ruckman) in VFL. I am still very bullish about him as a prospect for our midfield ... but I accept it's unlikely that we would put him in this week.

I'm still worried about our undermanned midfield, though. At the least, I'd like Kingers to give Rowsten a full game, but I can't see who he'd (realistically) drop to do that.

On ladder positions, this should be the “easiest” of our remaining home matches in Giant Stadium this year.

Whilst we have not been playing well the past 6 games, our resilience and spirit in our fantastic wins against Geelong and Carlton shows what we are capable of. Toby was in awesome form against Carlton, and Jesse is now just 3 goals behind Jeremy Cameron in the Coleman Medal race.

The market also has us as overwhelming favourites. Hopefully we build on the momentum from our Carlton game, and also have a % boosting win.

Midfield is still an issue but I would say we go in unchanged

Someone said it before and I agree that kingers values system over players.

Gee it would be good to get some soldiers back soon

From what I've read we're a chance at getting both Kelly and McMullin back for this game.

Do you think they walk into the side?

One could easily come into the best 23 for Rowston, but I'm not sure who would go out for the other though.

I think Angove would make way for Kelly. Angove is still the understudy.

This Richmond match also sees our club celebrate cultural diversity. There will also be 200 people getting citizenship, so that will also be a boost to our crowd numbers!

With the support of Multicultural NSW, the GIANTS will deliver a Cultural Festival from 12:15pm featuring cultural performances, interactive stations and activities ahead of the 4:15pm bounce on Saturday, following a week-long celebration of diversity and workshops at the club.

The Minister for Multiculturalism, Hon. Stephen Kamper has been a key supporter of the initiative.

“The GIANTS has always championed diversity in Western Sydney, and the Cultural Heritage Series game acknowledges the contributions multicultural communities have made to the club and to the region,” Minister Kamper said.

I’d drop Wehr before Angove.
Wehr is a little frustrating at times, but overall I think he’s really solid. Quite flexible, can play wing or down back, super hard at it, neat disposal.

In saying all that, Angove should stay. He looked great on Saturday. He lost his composure a little bit at the end, but he provided some great run and class.

Kelly for Rowston.

Looks like Nankervis, Lynch and Prestia will likely be back for Tigers, while Lalor is out injured and Balta is out due to his curfew. Makes the Tigers' midfield relatively strong, although they seem to have been underperforming this year. As in several games this year, we should have the edge in the forwards and defence ... provided we can break even in the midfield.

In more positive news, captain and ruckman Toby Nankervis is deemed available for selection after missing the Dreamtime at the G clash after being managed with a knee injury. "Toby Nankervis has been carrying a knee injury, like many ruckmen," Serpell said. "In fact, we had to hold him back from playing, but we think we have managed him quite well and definitely available for selection this week."

Veteran midfielder Dion Prestia returned through the VFL over the weekend and could be rushed back in after a long lay off.

Key forward Tom Lynch will need to get through training this week to put his hand up for selection as he looks to exit concussion protocols.

Premiership defender Jayden Short's calf issue hasn't progressed as the club would have liked, and is expected to spend another fortnight on the sidelines.

GWS vs Richmond

Scores per inside 50 entry

The Giants found their attacking mojo again against the Blues as they peppered the goals with 25 scoring shots from just 47 inside 50 entries.

That effort exceeds their already impressive season average of 47.8 per cent (meaning they score from nearly every second inside 50 entry).

Richmond, on the other hand, have struggled to convert inside 50 entries, ranked 15th with a rate of 43.1 per cent.

With an inexperienced list, and veteran forwards in and out of the side through injury, it's not surprising the Tigers have struggled offensively this season.

However, they'll certainly have to attempt to spoil the Giants' efficiency inside the arc, or GWS could send the Tigers home with a nasty percentage-stripping loss.

Id hold back McMullin for a week to give Rowston a proper run, 1 week for a groin seems an unnecessary risk. If Kelly is right, Whitfield back to defence and Wehr out.
I'd also not be bringing him back in based on his last two performances.

There are others who moved in front.

I think you're right about this. With Kelly you definitely make room for him in the team, at the expense of either Rowston or Angove.

But I can't think of anyone from last week's team that I would take out for McMullin, based on their last performances.

A fit Kelly walks straight back into the side. A big fan of Angove maybe he moves to the sub role.

Don't upset the goose.

Fox Sports analysis of this round’s matches, and their burning question. And my answer is Yes! - this will kickstart us back to premiership contention after a disappointing few weeks (Geelong and Carlton wins aside)!

There’s one key stat that highlights just how dominant Adam Kingsley’s side can be when they’re on song. The last 14 times the Giants have taken 14 or more marks inside 50 in a game, their win-loss record is 13-1. “When they mark the ball 14 or more, they just don’t lose,” North Melbourne champion David King told Fox Footy’s First Crack. The Giants are generally pretty good at converting in front of goal, led well by the likes of Jesse Hogan, Aaron Cadman and Jake Riccardi. “They were given luxuries and gee did they make them pay,” King continued. “A lot of it was off the back of the ball movement up the field, quick, through the corridor… Carlton couldn’t lay a glove on the Giants,” former Saint Leigh Montagna added. “When they play like that and they play in shootouts they can’t be stopped.” Could this be the game that sparks the Giants into a purple patch of form and leads them back into premiership contention?

he was very good against the cats and injured early against the Dockers, dont be dissing my man!

in seriousness I think he is still ahead of the others in the pecking order.
