Well, just when we thought the season might be slipping away our boys produced one of their best performances of the year to take down the defending premiers Brisbane Lions on their home deck at the Gabba. Against a star-studded midfield, the return of Finn Callaghan and the inclusion of Harry Rowston made a massive difference to the midfield mix, with greatly improved results at centre clearances in particular. Aaron Cadman has easily his best game for the club and looked every bit a number one draft pick on the way to kicking five goals and taking 13 marks, while Toby Bedford looked more at home as a small, defensive pressure forward.

Opposition watch

The task doesn’t get too much easier in this week against the Gold Coast Suns. Although we’ve had the wood on them in recent years, Gold Coast are having their best season to date so far and look destined to play finals for the first time in their 15-season history. A quirk in the fixture means the Suns have only played 12 games heading into Round 15, so while level with us on 32 points, they currently boast an impressive 8-4 record in 2025.

Gold Coast have a stacked midfield with the likes of Touk Miller, Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell as their major ball-winners alongside the consistently solid ruck Jarrod Witts. Up forward, the two Ben’s – King and Long, have kicked 57 goals between them as one of the outstanding tall/small forward threats in the league. You’d imagine Sam Taylor gets the job on King and Connor Idun will be tasked with marking Long. Down back, off-season recruits Daniel Rioli and John Noble have been damaging from half-back and transformed the Suns’ game style with more run and gun coming out of defence.

The Suns are far from unbeatable though, in fact they’re a little bit like us with their recent Jekyll and Hyde form, losing to some sides they were favourites to beat. They also enter this match on the back of consecutive losses to Fremantle and Geelong, so they will be desperate to regain their early form heading into the business end of the season.

Potential team changes

Unfortunately, it looks like Brent Daniels will again be missing a stretch of games after being subbed off early against the Lions with an abdominal strain. Toby Greene, if deemed fit, is the likely inclusion. Beyond that, it’s unlikely that we’ll see many other changes to a winning team on the back of a strong performance. Jake Stringer was listed as returning this week according to the latest rehab report, but has he earned the right to be a walk-up starter? And who would we leave out if he is? I've said previously that he and Callum Brown are likely fighting for one spot in our best 23, and the Irishman was good against the Lions, kicking three goals. Josaia Delana looked lively at times but could be under pressure if the club looks to recall a more experienced player like Jacob Wehr or Toby McMullin.

Adam Giant’s prediction: GWS by 13 points.

So, fellow Giants fans, what are you expecting for this week’s match against Gold Coast?

Another must win game for us, certainly. Lose this and we'll be out of the top 8. A win gives us a chance to regroup during the bye for the run to the finish of the H&A season.

Kingers normally rewards those who play in wins, so I'm not expecting too many changes. And realistically, there weren't any non-performers.

As Adam Giant said, I think we can't afford to add Stringer to an already tall forward line. Callum Brown has been performing, so I think we need to run 'The Package' through VFL. There might be a rationale for putting him in place of Daniels if Greene doesn't give up ... but we're losing a lot of pressure and run that Binga brings or aura and cunning that Toby does. Otherwise Joey Delana or Toby McMullin would seem the likely replacement.

Otherwise, I want to see more of the same from us!

Some overall stats against Gold Coast also give us reason to feel confident
  • we are currently on a 4 game consecutive winning streak against Gold Coast
  • historically against all AFL teams, we have had our best head to head results against Gold Coast - winning 14 of the 19 games played against them.
  • we have NEVER ever lost to Gold Coast at Giants Stadium - all 6 matches at Giants Stadium have been wins for us, with the winning margins ranging from 26 points to 108 points
  • Although the sample size is admittedly small, Kingsley has also NEVER ever lost against Gold Coast. They are one of just 4 teams (Geelong, Melbourne and North being the others) that the Giants under Kingsley have a 100% win record against.

is conor stone a chance of ever getting a recall? overall has had a pretty strong 6 week period in the 2s, is he any chance to play the rest of the season or looking too unlikely?

No, I don't think so. Fonti has that spot locked down at the moment.

Only way I can see Stone coming back is through an injury to one of our defenders, and even then I wouldn't count on it.

Yeah I think even Wehr is ahead of him currently. Fonti looks handy as hell too.

I really wanted Conor Stone to break out this year but it's doesn't look likely.

I'm guessing Daniels will be out for a few now. So I'm guessing it's a straight swap back for Toby Greene.

Defender Sam Taylor is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks with scans confirming a fractured toe. The All-Australian defender reported soreness post-match and scans earlier this week confirmed the extent of the injury. Taylor will wear a moonboot for the next two weeks, before beginning to rebuild his training load.

FMD.

Do we move HH back, or slot Wade Derksen in for his debut?

Personally, I'd give Derksen his debut - he's been going really well in VFL - and keep the rest of the set-up th same.
I’d like to see Derksen, he’s been really impressive in the VFL this year. Leek needs to step up now, but lucky the defensive stocks are so good. Taylor is a massive loss but it’s the one area where the depth is there.

That injury list is concerning though, grows every week. The depth is really being tested.

If they stick with position for position replacements - you'd think he was next in.
But I suspect they'll push HH back and find room for Stringer, if he's in line for selection.

I too hope we give Wade his debut. He is the player on our current list who has been waiting the longest to debut, and given we denied his request to leave last year (Wade’s contract expires this year), I hope he gets a chance to play for at AFL level with us.

Nope, on the injury list this week

don’t think we need to replace Taylor with another key back. Last up GCS only played 2 key forwards. Aleer and Bucks with help from Idun and HH to play wing but give a chop out if we get stuck.

Toby for Daniels & stringer for Delana. Leake for Taylor

It will be interesting to see if the selection committee choose a like-for-like replacement for Taylor, or just send HH back as the third defender/interceptor. Personally I think we're well sorted given that Aleer is in the team already, so I'd lean towards the latter option and bring McMullin back in. It's a Sunday afternoon game with sunny weather predicted, so a speedier line up would suit the conditions.

he may get a game or 2, but there a few ahead of him

I'm thinking they could just bring Wehr back instead. He can slot into the defence or wing as needed, giving us the flexibility to play Himmelberg in either position and even swap around on the fly.

Id suspect Leek goes into Buckley's role, buckley to Taylor and Himmelberg goes back to defence.
I imagine we bring in McMullen or similar (Leake, Wehr or Angwin)

The problem with all these winning streaks is they will come to an end one day.

Defeatist.

Every time my team wins, I always expect an infinite winning streak from that point forward.

Stringer and Toby back.
Be interesting to see who misses out.
We can't have all of Brown, Stringer, Riccardi on the bench. Probably Stringer as sub.
