Plaudits in the media for both Giants and Suns for an excellent game yesterday. In particular, the midfield battle of Green & Callaghan versus Anderson, Rowell & Miller was seen as exciting. (Nice to get some acknowledgement for a change.)

Just a wee note of realism on our position in the top 8, though. We're on level points (36) with Adelaide, Hawks & Freo who respectively play Tigers, Norths & Saints while we have our bye; and one win ahead of Dogs & Suns who have much superior percentages than us, and who respectively play Swans & Demons. Presuming that all those teams win, we will sit 9th at the end of next round!

So, that was an important win over Suns to keep in touch with the 8 ... but we still have a fight on our hands to make finals.

Also, we might be secretly (or not!) cheering for Swans against Dogs and other upsets next round.

Norf get the pee-pee-poo-poos off the bye in tassie ... c'mon Xerri!!!! Freo were hammered by the saints earlier in the year as well ... we are by no means certain to drop to 9th, but it is likely-ish

GWS is making a habit of overturning large deficits to storm home to victory in front of the home crowd at Engie Stadium.
Sunday's eight-point win over Gold Coast was the latest instalment of the Giants' extraordinary turnaround, following on from the Round 12 stirring comeback against Richmond. Adam Kingsley's men found themselves 29 points down late in the second term, and required an eight-goal surge in the final quarter to prevail in front of 10,504 adoring fans who witnessed arguably the best 'Expansion Cup' clash to date.

"I didn't have Wardy this time, that was the only difference," Kingsley said.

more in the story

Thomas: Thought his second half was massive. His desperation, defensive work was pivotal.

Jones: A little quiet, struggled to get any space or involved in attack. Good pressure and chasing as per usual.

Greene: His last quarter was massive. Started with his beautiful left foot pass to
Cadman in the first 10 seconds. A real heart and soul game. That goal in the last sent the crowd crazy.

Cadman: First half was disappointing, especially after last week. But his last half was crucial. His conversion at the start of the 4th was massive. The contest against multiple defenders which brought the ball to ground for a Thomas goal was brilliant. Love his passion.

Whitfield: Really missed his run, hopefully back after the bye.

Ash: Had to step up in the absence of Whitfield, ran all day, tried to generate rebound. As usual, his mistakes stand out. Sometimes the safe option is the best option. However, he did a lot of good.

Angwin: His bad stands out (that dropped mark, easily out bodied at times) but he did some excellent things. Last quarter he had a big spoil, gathered the rebound, launched it out of attack to the leading forward. Was a huge individual effort.

Green: What a game. When the midfield was getting smashed, he was the lone ranger. He worked tirelessly. That goal, you knew the game was turning when he slotted that.

Bedford: If he was tagging Anderson, he failed. But offensively he did some nice things and had a few gut runs.

Callaghan: Mostly unsighted early, but boy did he finish strong. His run, carry and metres gained in the last helped turn the game. When he’s got space, you know something good is about to happen.

Stringer: I had written him off. Struggled to get into it, could barely chase, looked so far off it. Then he slots 2 remarkable goals in the last, job done.

Aleer: Some good, some bad, he’s growing. He took one awesome 1-on-1 contested mark deep in defence. Overall I thought he stood up pretty well. Had one of the biggest spoils I can recall in the last He just needs a lot more strength. He’s pushed off too easily, his tackled are broken too easily. Plenty to work with.

Kelly: Pretty invisible. Doesn’t seem to have any power, ball use quite good however he just couldn’t really find it. Not sure what’s going on.

Hogan: Completed hard, pushed high up the ground to provide an option. Not his best game but some important contests.

Rowston: Quite liked his game. Up against a strong midfield he battled very well. Strong tackler, good defensively, he’s a little like Peatling. Should stay.

Riccardi: Very good game, especially early. Great assistance in the ruck, kicked a beautiful snap goal. His efforts early almost kept the game alive.

Himmelberg: Copped a knock to his knee but bravely battled on. Stats aren’t huge but stood up in a few contests that helped win possession back.

O’Halloran: Underrated player. Gone from fringe to important player and should be rising the depth chart. He’s so hard at it, brilliant tackler, and boots it a mile. Good game.

Fonti: Would’ve liked to see more run but did his job. One of the smoothest, well-balanced players I’ve seen.

Idun: A rock in defence, neutralised or won most contests he was in. Without Taylor he needed to step up and he did.

Madden: Was always going to be a huge test. Well beaten early, giving away frees and being smashed in the clearances. But he fought hard all day. The last quarter he completed so well, gutsy.

Buckley: Matched up on King who had 7 possessions and 2 goals. Did the job well. Won key contests.

Brown: Shocked he only had 12 possessions because it felt like he was instrumental. Every bail out kick to him, he won the contest. His mobility, speed and strong hands are all vital. Monster effort.

Special mention to Nick Madden who got towled early by Witts before fighting back to be competitive. Probably don't win that game without his contribution.
I don't think Briggs should come back in, after bye. i looked it up Tom Green has had 3 of his best 4 Clearence games with Madden as the Ruck, Maybe we have a Fort,Oscar Mc situation

Lone ranga?
Fits 😂

The noise in the last, so good. I reckon the crowd really sensed the comeback after the second goal in the last, and after Green’s gem, everyone was up and about!

I had some excellent, knowledgeable fans around me. Great atmosphere. Great venue too, I’ve watched games on tv for so long, but being there is entirely different. A bit surreal.

Great analysis there, I agree pretty much across the board.

On Angwin, while I didn't notice him at all during the game, upon watching the replay he actually did some good stuff. Was involved in some really important disposal chains and laid some strong tackles. He's much maligned on this board, but I think he keeps his spot on the back of that performance.

Outstanding analysis. Thanks.

I loved Toby’s totally unnecessary body slam on Matt Rowell.

10k in an 80k stadium - I’m thinking out 10.5k in a 23k stadium produced a better atmosphere. Souths are a massive club - 10k crowds. 😳

There were also people calling the radio station this morning saying they gave up and went home and watched the replay after encountering the massive cluster f**k of transport & parking.

Yet all I hear all the time from supporters of 150yr old clubs in the rusted on “heartland” is how bad our crowds are.

Some of the fallouts from the match - No penalty for Ben King, but 3 players got fined including Toby and Riccardi.

King's teammate, Matt Rowell, wasn't so lucky after he was hit with a $3,125 fine for careless contact with an umpire. It's his fourth offence.

Toby Greene copped the same punishment, and was fined $1,875.

GWS' Jake Riccardi was also fined $2,000 for tripping.

High percentage of Giants fans (95%) turned up! I love seeing all the juniors + familys turn up to help with the crowd. Shame the traffic might stop them coming back anytime soon :(
All AFL registered players in Sydney should be given free tickets to all Giants game, that will help with crowds.

Tough 2 hour drive from the Northern beaches and 30 mins to get out of Olympic Park. This is why people hate Olympic park. The Giants marketing should be giving pre warning on traffic when so many events are on in future.

Awesome win though, Umps have sucked 3 games in a row at home!! Time to put the pressure on Mr Matthews

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Even though the information for what's on / trackwork / roadworks etc. in and around the precinct is available online, it would be beneficial if Giant's media gave a summary in the weekly email.

i.e. the email for the Sun's game could have included Torvill and Dean starting at 1pm, trackwork etc.

The SYD-NQL game was a lot higher than the other Sydney games because the Roosters were giving away free tickets to emergency services personnel (I'm with Marine Rescue NSW). A noble gesture to be sure, but usually the Roosters crowds are comparable to the other Sydney teams (ie. low 10000s).
