A great win by the boys at Optus Stadium last start. We began hard and kept the running game up throughout the match, to enjoy a percentage boosting victory against the Eagles. But that is just what should have been the outcome. The harder task is next week's game, as we turn our attention to the high-flying Cats. They have an easy run home to a likely top-4 ladder position, and this game will be one of the hardest matchups. After the Giants beat them at home earlier in the year, I'm sure that they will be aiming to return the favour. For us, winning a game against a top 8 opponent is vitally important for us to reach the finals, and a home game is one that we need to win.

Given the performance against the Eagles, no doubt Adam Kingsley will be favourably disposed towards the 23 who got that job done. But there is likely to be selection pressure coming on, with several players likely to return from injury/illness. Hopefully (but not guaranteed) Jesse Hogan will be recovered. We saw against Eagles that Max Gruzewski didn't get much opportunity, so that's an easy out if Jesse gets up. (And we really need Jesse to be 100% fit and healthy if we really want to compete with Geelong.) In fact, even if Jesse doesn't get up, I'd be inclined to make Stringer the third tall and replace Gru with a player in a different position.

Lachie Whitfield should surely be recovered from his concussion after the extra week. James Leake was steady as his replacement against Eagles, but is not going to keep Lachie out of the team. His best chance might be as sub, although it's possible Buckley's injury could see him retain his spot. There will be close watch this week on Jack Buckley's ankle. Badly rolled, the outlook is not positive at all in my view. Do we go in undermanned and rejigged in the backline with just Aleer-Idun-Himmelberg as the talls, which could keep Leake's spot, or do we (finally) give Wade Derksen a debut to keep our defensive structure in place? Derksen-Aleer have been impressive at VFL level, so I'd have no qualms about that, but Kingers might have a different view.

Finally, the question for the midfield will be whether Cogs did enough in his three quarters of VFL to demand inclusion, or is he still a touch underdone? We're going to have to rely on the coaching and fitness team to make the right call. If he does come in, who for? Rowsten would be more like-for-like in normal circumstances, but if we play Cogs more as a winger, then is it in place of Angwin? Angwin was actually pretty solid against Eagles; but then either he or Rowsten would be unlucky. The other option would be dropping Harvey Thomas, who was the sub (which probably sees either Cogs, Angwin or Rowsten as the sub anyway).

Geelong will be a hard fight. We will need everyone to be one from the first bounce, and play 100% no matter who is selected. What are your thoughts on the team, your preferred selections, or the matchups?

Whitfield in for Leake.
I’m not confident Hogan will be back.
If Bucks is out I think it’s most likely HH goes back.
Cogs in for Rowston/Angwin… more likely Angwin.

We have reason to be optimistic against Geelong. The Giants under Kingsley have never lost to the Cats, and most importantly we have displayed remarkable confidence and resilience against them as all of these 3 wins have been in Geelong, and our victories have been in very close games (the margins all ranging from 4 to 7 points). I would like to think that Geelong have a psychological disadvantage when playing against us - just like we unfortunately seem to have when playing the Bulldogs and Sydney recently.

This is a good chance to ease Coniglio back into senior footy as the sub. That would mean Angwin probably keeps his starting spot on the wing, and Harvey Thomas is the unlucky one to miss. But no doubt it's looking a little dire down back with Buckley unlikely to play and Taylor still a couple of weeks away.

I don't love the idea, but maybe Himmelberg has to do the job on Cameron this week. That would free up Aleer to take the bigger man in Neale, and Idun to Henry. It doesn't look great on paper but taking the two best KPDs out of any side is going to cause headaches.

In: Coniglio, Hogan, Whitfield (all pending fitness)
Out: Thomas, Gruzewski, Leake

Can’t stress enough how important this game is

We win this and we make a statement for 2025 as contenders
Absolutely. Geelong are currently the major challengers to Collingwood for the premiership, and Chris Scott is a very good dual premiership coach. Regardless of the result of this match, Geelong are almost certainly going to be in the top 4 given their remaining fixture, but for us it is a key must win game. We are currently at 10 wins 6 losses, and with Sydney and the Bulldogs coming up in the next 3 weeks, this is a pivotal game for our final chances. Winning this game (and with games against Essendon, North and St Kilda left), we will be well placed to make the finals.

Hi folks. One of my opponents in a keeper league claims Tom Green has suffered hamstring awareness. Is this true?

If true, from past experience, we'll hear nothing until the team is announced with him "out, due injury".

If true, then I'd expect Cogs would be the replacement, even though he might not play as a true inside midfielder against the Cats.

Huge month of footy starts on Saturday

We win and we know we stack up against the best at the pointy end

We lose and the pressure mounts

Buckley and Hogan a test. If I’m reading between the lines it sounds like they’ll both miss.
No update on Bingas timeline.

Idun HH Ash
Whitfield Aleer Fonti
Angwin Callaghan Kelly
Greene Gru Brown
Stringer Cadman Jones
Briggs Green XOH

Ricca Cogs Rowston Leake Cogs

Play Idun on Cameron.. Idun has been in great form.

I'm thinking Hogan probably gets up, it was mainly the gastro that kept him out last week. At least I'm hoping so anyway. Buckley was listed as a test but a "medium-grade ligament sprain" sounds bad so it's hard to imagine he plays. If he misses I'd like to see Derksen come in for his debut, it's been a long time coming and from what I've heard he's been doing very well as a KPD in the VFL.

B: Idun, Derksen, Whitfield
HB: Himmelberg, Aleer, Ash
C: Angwin, Callaghan, Kelly
HF: Stringer, Cadman, Brown
F: Greene, Hogan, Jones
R: Briggs, Green, XOH
INT: Fonti, Bedford, Rowston, Riccardi, Thomas

If Cogs is fit he could come in for Thomas.

I agree on cogs, Jesse and Derksen … we need another specialist defender

Jesse’ was related to his ongoing foot injuries.
