He’s fast in a straight line - was good in the midfield, with a run upMotlop was the third fastest player on the ground.
He takes too long to accelerate!
He gets smashed in tackles inside F50 constantly.

I liked Motlop up the ground a bit too but he adds enough up forward - the disappointing thing is he now has 2 goal 8 for the year (plus 3 goals assists) and is equal 10th in the league for tackles inside 50. His work to set up Charlie to handball that point shows his "fast twitch fibre" talent. In fact if you went through the year he probably should have at least double the "goal assists" as he has very often crumbed, found space to set a team mate up with a good handball only to be let down by their finish.Motlop was better in the midfield - he doesn’t seem to have those fast-twitch fibres that make some small forward so elusive.
He doesn’t have the speed to find space in a congested forward line.
Pretty good in the middle this week.
Interesting to see his work under more pressure in the midfield.
Generally he is getting the ball with zero room to move - I look at those as him doing a good job to create a stoppage rather than missed scoring chances. He’s fast in a straight line - was good in the midfield, with a run up.

Very much hope you’re correct.Got a feeling this has round 14 2023 v Gold Coast vibes.
You guys single handedly turned your season around in 1 game and I’m thinking the same thing happened on Saturday. And the good news is that Carlton are in a far better position and have far more margin for error this time around.

Williams had one too.Fogarty got caught badly on the wing yesterday taking forever to get rid of it.
Much prefer him up the ground - he & Fog doing the same roll - although Motlop slightly better in front of goal. Not sure we need two non-scoring, defensive smalls?I liked Motlop up the ground a bit too but he adds enough up forward - the disappointing thing is he now has 2 goal 8 for the year (plus 3 goals assists) and is equal 10th in the league for tackles inside 50. But hopefully Durdin and White can allow Motlop to spend more time around the middle - he gives us a nice point of difference in their and generally uses it well
I’m also seeing a few dismissing the win because of the opposition we played. Not saying we can’t improve but defensively we’ve done well and it’s kept us in for most of the first four games. It’s our forwards and offensive play that has let us down.I have a question for you here, because I keep seeing this.
We've played Collingwood (4th), Hawthorn (5th), Bulldogs (12th), Richmond (16th) and WC (18th); you'd argue that's a pretty good cross section/sample size for the competition, between good and poor sides. We have the fourth best points against in the comp; it's why we have such a healthy percentage despite being 1-4. The problem isn't our defense, but our ability to score; we have the fourth worst offense in the comp. Kicking to 60 points a week simply isn't going to see you winning too many AFL games.
So - with that in mind - can you tell me why you think our press structures are poor/not working, when the evidence suggests they very much are?
Needs to get better at getting his hands free and absorbing the tackle. Good point, it seemed like they took ages looking for an option and are two players who don’t normally get caught.Williams had one too.
I wonder if there had been direction to steady and look for options as there'd been commentary about us moving the ball i50 too quickly?
Well - they’re all we have!Motlop has 2.8 for the year - Fogarty 1.2
Motlop has 3 goal assists - Fogarty 1
Motlop has 26 score involvements Fogarty has 18
Not sure you can say they are both non-scoring - Motlop just hasn't converted his chances.
Yep, not against having 27 small forwards on our list.Any chance us geting Liam Ryan on the cheap...
May not want to play out his last days in a bottom side and would exponentially improve our forwrad 50.
greater chance of finding a decent oneYep, not against having 27 small forwards on our list.
I still have major doubts on Williams ability to consistently perform as a small forward. Has played one good game as a mid,Well - they’re all we have!
Above stats aren’t a ringing endorsement for either unfortunately.
I’d see Durdin & Williams as our main small forward options -adding in Elijah & Cottrell playing HHF.
Either fog or Motlop as defensive forward, not both.
Unless we use Motlop changing mid & resting a mid forward.
The problem is that Walsh is not guaranteed to be fit from one week to the next. Somebody close to him and his family told me his back is totally stuffed, he is only playing on the back of being jabbed up on game day, and he's a candidate to retire from footy early. He has the desire to play, but his body may not allow it. I hope he can keep going for some years yet, and performances like this week are great, but shouldn't be expected every week. The difference between fit Walsh and struggle Walsh is the width of the grand canyon. Transforms our midfield. Carroll looked at home at the level. Match practice intensity but good to build a little confidence.
They may not be a ringing endorsement of either but they do clearly show Motlop and Fogarty are like for like.Well - they’re all we have!

Williams to me is more of a HHF player who can take some time in the midfield, some of his spotting up of players on Saturday was superb, just keep him out of the backline please, unfortunately we are bereft of genuine small forwards, Durdin is the only one who inspires some confidence in me if his body is right.Well - they’re all we have!

I can only dream that either turn into Nick Watson! They may not be a ringing endorsement of either but they do clearly show Motlop and Fogarty are like for like.
I will take the bloke who has had 10 scoring shots and 3 goals assists over the one who has had 3 & 1 any day.
FWIW Nick Watson kicked 2.9 in his first 4 games last year and finished the season with 25.27 from 18 games
Watson has had 1 less scoring shot than Motlop this year (2.8 to 6.3), 5 fewer tackles, 2 less tackles inside 50 & 1 less score involvement - plus less disposals & clearances (2-7)... and Watson plays in a system that is custom made for him.I can only dream that either turn into Nick Watson!
I have a feeling Nick might be on a sharper curve than our boys.
He’s a very different player than Motlop or Fog - this season stats aside.Watson has had 1 less scoring shot than Motlop this year (2.8 to 6.3), 5 fewer tackles, 2 less tackles inside 50 & 1 less score involvement - plus less disposals & clearances (2-7)... and Watson plays in a system that is custom made for him.
Perception (and straight kicking) make a massive difference
Hard to prove something that would never happen but I would almost guarantee Watson would struggle in our set up. He benefits greatly from the fact the hawks have no real marking forward and push everyone high a use brilliant foot skills to get the small forwards isolated out the back. He’s a very different player than Motlop or Fog - this season stats aside.
He’s exactly what we are missing.
Hawks share it around amongst their bevy of smalls - Watson would thrive in our forward line at the feet of Charlie & H.

I'm more bullish on Motlop than most and am surprised by the calls to drop him. He's not finishing his work and is too slow to dispose of the footy at times, but much more involved than last year. Confident he works nicely into the season.
Yep, a few years back just accepting the tackle would have been penalised but now as soon as you try to lift your arms the umpires think that is prior opportunity, especially if, as often happens, you only manage to get 1 arm free. It's not the worst thing to do - if you know you're not going to have prior, it's often better to take the stoppage and reset rather than let the ball loose when there are just as many opposition players around as teammates. We don't have many who seem to really understand that concept of ball security - guys like Gov trying to get cute with little toe pokes is a good example. Take the ball, take the contact, reset.
