Preseason: Xerri scoring is unsustainable. Just a tackle bot. Look who he played in the final few rounds etc

He’s a monster that’s about to start filling a wardrobe with AA jackets.

The Mumford comparisons in the media are a bit laughable tbh, Mumford was nowhere near this good.

Gawn actually had a decent game, he was awesome in the 3rd. Xerri is just a force of nature at the moment.

It’s tempting to trade Gawn. Feels like a nothing trade if I just swap him for Xerri though
What about Gawn to Marshall, with the good bye

English struggled against Xerri in RD1 too so maybe it's just a trend of rucks against Xerri.

Gawn's first half was pretty dogshit but I noticed throughout the whole game that a lot of his hitouts would go straight to the ground for a dees player to gather, so those hitouts didn't actually count as a HTA which probably cost him 30-40 points.

10th highest scorer last year even though he missed two games. Second highest average with a big gap to third. Top 3 every year for the past five years.

I’d rather wait until the king declines rather than missing all those easy points.

13% ownership for Gawn is delicious.

Gawn scored 177 two games ago.

18% ownership. It’s almost unfathomable.

82% of coaches tanking.

That’s fair enough. Gawn has missed 6 games in the last 4 years. I can understand your concern.

Anyone without Gawn may as well start planning for 2026

See what the big man thinks:

Gawn down to 16.8% ownership.

Top 3 for a decade and 177 three games ago.

Gobsmacking.

He had an issue with his voice box. Didn’t stop him training, just didn’t do contact training. Can’t compare a bloke who masses points from HTA and Ruck craft to a running midfielder.

He literally just finished top 3 in the entire comp, averaging 124. I can’t fathom how 50% of SCers thinks six months makes that much difference. That’s something like 80,000 teams. A decline is usually gradual, not overnight.

Scythe94 kept saying he didn’t ton up first hit out. I’d say 129 is a huge result. It’s a tough crowd when they’re complaining about a 129.
I'm thinking all the folks you convinced to jump on Gawn have a message for you.

Never go full adamant on the sc board. It comes back to bite every time.

To be fair, Xerri was CD'd pretty well in this game.
1) To the eye it was a pretty even (ruck) contest. Lots of 50/50 taps. I was genuinely surprised that the 1/4 time scores were something like 50 (X) to about 15 (Gawn). That was the difference.

2) Xerri scored 90 dt/aflf points. Had just 29 HO's and 2 tackles.
He scored under 90 dt points just 3 times last year... 83/90, 83/103, 57/82.

He went 110 or less dt points last year 10 times, av'd 102.2 SC points in those games and only went over 111 one time (123).

Given his tough run I'm happy not to own him, and I don't think it would be incredibly smart to chase him.

CD'd isnt a thing.

He was about 8 HTA's from his first 13 hitouts.

His 1st quarter was 32 AF, 8 disp, 7 cont for 6 clearances.

He didn't have to "dominate" Gawn per say in the actual hitout numbers, just everything he did was extremely effective, that's how the scoring works.

The big factor here is the emergence of the Roos midfield. If they start to get a hold of teams the way they did against Melbourne then Xerri’s HTA and SI output will rise organically as well.

I think the North midfield will still be prone to a little bit of inconsistency, across quarters as well as matches, so his scores will be prone to surges.

But I think by the end of the year he will be the biggest points scorer. So how much are we prepared to miss out on? At $650k it makes better sense if we pay for all of them.

Obviously.

I should have framed my post better.

On the balance of probability, he was unsustainably efficient in this game.
It was essentially (statistically) the best game he's ever played.

Absolutely he can be reasonably expected to improve from last year, but games of 10+ clearances and score involvements with a single turnover just aren't the norm.

The points from this week are in the bank, and that's great, but I don't think he'll significantly outscore Gawn, TDK or Marshall over the next 6-8 weeks.
