The club doesn't make political statements. Human rights, inclusion, diversity maybe but these aren't political. They are just good things.

I hate myself for getting drawn into a debate on this - but if you think matters such as trans rights (under the banner of inclusion) aren't political, you're absolutely kidding yourself.

Just look at controversy its causing in women's sport & tell me its not a political matter.

I just sometimes want to enjoy the footy without hearing the same corporate stuff I hear in the office, in the news & just about everywhere else.

The rights of minority communities are not political issues. RWNJs hijacking the discourse and aligning them with their political agendas doesn't change what they are.

Just because there are groups/people that want to play politics with certain things for political benefit (and blow rare occurrences wildly out of proportion in your example), I don't see why the club or anyone, has to accept or kowtow to that, or accept that basic decent messages and positions being offered are "political statements".

Because gay people can have mental health issues because of they way they are treated ( i have a couple of gay relo's who im close to , so please don't make something of it )
There is no need for a game as there are bigger issues .
Maybe have some rainbow socks like my club has done , but NO need to change the jumper.
I really can't wait for the next

So it all just feels very performative, and I would rather see more initiatives from the AFL & clubs at grassroots levels to reach out to effected communities.

As for a mental health round, this industry is clearly not ready, and arguably not deserving of one. I think instead there should be a Toughen Up, Get Over It and Listen to Kane Cornes round.

Well, it's the slippery slope with entering into the inclusivity arena. How does one determine what causes & communities are worthy of the focus and which ones aren't?

I find these sorts of X is more important than Y round discussions a bit odd. To you something might mean more, to others something else might.

For those who seem to worry about a round being designated X round or that it impacts your enjoyment of the footy, then I can't really help you. I just don't get it. You can turn the TV on at first bounce and miss most of it if you're really that upset by it, or gloss over the social media posts and live your life.

Let's be honest about why all these "special" things are embraced by the AFL.
Dreamtime at the G, Pride, Anzac Day, Gather Round, Opening Round, AFLW, etc, etc, etc.
1) Generate attention ie clicks, bums on seats and TV audience.
2) Broaden the appeal of the game to women and non-anglo folk but particularly to kids. They are the future of the game.
3) Sell more merchandise.
Our club is a participant in this ongoing promotion and I think we do it pretty well, particularly Marn Grook and Pride. Doesn't mean there isn't some genuine belief behind it but let's not delude ourselves about the reason why.

I'd ask what's wrong with a tribute to and celebration of people who have traditionally been excluded or stigmatised, but I suspect we're going to keep going in circles based on your personal preferences.

And yours, also not just me , people say they are a minority, what about a round for those affected by George Pell and his mates , is that worth it as well !

I don't think there's any connection between the rounds/jumpers/causes we've been discussing and winning flags. It's not an either or situation.

Most clubs are broadly making the same statements, celebrating and posting about the same things.

By wearing a jumper for Pride? With both teams participating in the match/recognition, so any effect on performance (lol) cancels out.

I mean if people are so worried about their team having some colours on their jumper, there's always Collingwood.
