How about we blow the doors off the joint and land BOTH Butters and King as free agents at the end of 26?

Realistically, is there anything stopping us from doing this if both players are keen? And I fully acknowledge that this is a major sticking point, obviously!

By all reports Port will offer Butters a massive deal to stay so the combined salary commitment for both players would also be very significant. On the flipside, our cap will be freed up somewhat by several retirements, and we'll cease paying part of Grundy's salary the year after.

Butters, Nick, Long in the middle. Tommy and Josh on the wings, all kicking it to King and West with Bobby, Shoota, Beau (and who knows, maybe Saxena) at ground level.

Sounds good to me! Also, do the old Hollywood casting trick of telling Butters and King that the other is coming to the Pies. Just don't let their managers talk to each other for the whole year... Piece of cake!

As much as I’d love it, Butters is leaving end of this year for the best deal port can get.

The coast line will still be there post retirement. SA shits over it anyway
He'll be able to buy a piece of it if he goes now.

It won't surprise me if he goes. He's hitting 30 and would have earned way less in his career than any other star of a similar age. If he can cash in, good luck to him.

That's overs imo, but he is a heart and soul player and we don't want to lose him.
Can't lose Maynard. I think that mediums with multiple skillsets are really underrated.

Like Elliott up forward, he gives us an extra dimension. Fantastic contest player in the air or on the ground who also gives us some dash and good ball use out of defence.

Peanut Morris reporting St Kilda offering $12.5m over 7 years for TDK?! That is insane!
It’s good business, IMO, so long as Marshall’s put up for trade post 2025 and they can still retain NWM. Marshall’s a $700-800k ruckman so you can’t have circa $2.5m of your cap tied up in ruckman.

Complete hypothetical here, but Marshall is then traded to West Coast who need a ruckman for a nice pick. In one go St Kilda have strengthened their ruck and loaded up on a second 1st Rd pick. It’s overs of course for TDK, but we saw it with Perryman you have to pay FA’s bonkers money.

Surprise to nobody, there aren't any Port players who would fit this list (cough Butters cough)
His list wasn't those most likely to leave - it was who would be better off leaving.

It's a pretty well thought out list I think - although I think Van Rooyen is a lemon and wouldn't include him.

I wouldn't mind us chasing James Blanck.

I think Butters would be much better off jumping off the dumpster fire that will be Port under their succession plan and coming to play with Nick Daicos :)

I think Sean Darcy's body might be a bit cooked with how heavy he is, so not sure if a change of scenery fixes him. I would put Ned Moyle there instead, as Witts seems to be eternal.

Not a fan at all of JVR. Is Blanck healthy? I don't know much about him

The only reason that they’re talking up Butters leaving is that he was very close with Ken. If Port lose Butters and Bergman they will be in St Kilda territory for the next decade, they will have two stars in JHF and Rozee, a bunch of solid players and players that wouldn’t get a game at any other club

Blanck was the guy who hurt Nick, causing him to miss winning the Brownlow.
Then the karma bus ran him over - ACL.
We'd need to train the Hawthorn out of him.

They'll recruit really hard even if they retain those 2.

Yeah I can see Port getting lost in the wilderness quite easily.

There's also the fact that Butters is a Bacchus Marsh boy, so the attraction of coming home for his big money, long term deal would be real.

We also saw with Grundy that overpaying a ruckman can be seriously detrimental to your cap, especially if they don’t perform to expectations. For that kind of money TDK would want to be the best ruck in the comp for near on the next decade or it will end in tears. The kid is good, but I doubt he’s ever going to be Max Gawn good.
