Anything can happen between now & the end of the year.

If it's not Rowell, I'm sure there are other players they have their eyes on & they'll be speaking to all of them.

We should have at least 500k free in the salary cap, and the retirements of Sidebottom, Pendles and Howe get us there, also with money to spare to cover the remaining two spots on draftees too.
If Treloars 300k hasn't been paid out already. That's bonus on top.
2nd priority would be the likes of Rowell or Petracca, but they would cost high draft capital.
My 500k estimate is based on Graeme Wright's comments that we could have kept both Grundy and Henry, which equals 1m free in 2023. Then the traded in players vs traded out value since then almost breaks even except for Murphy's salary.
And we can also try get a Sam collins if we are still struggling for a key defender. And add retirements of 2 of Micthell, WHE, Cox for that.
The main point I'm getting to is that we will have as much cash to splash to rival anyone. But we will have to wait until mid season for the more serious speculations to start to emerge.

I think you've highlighted 2 very reasonable targets - Richards and SDK being 25 and 23 respectively fit our age graphic really well and SDK in particular will fill a gap we carried throughout 2024 (though I am bullish/hopeful Reef may go someway to filling said gap).

For those 2 it will probably come down to how they perform in season 2025 as both are also restricted and can be matched by the dogs and cats and a trade forced - I certainly wouldn't want to be dealing with Mackie if SDK recaptures his 2022 and early 2023 form. Another season like 2024 from him might see the cats prepared to cut their losses and look to move on the likes of Rowell and JUH who they've reportedly got strong interest in both.

You're right on Richards - that I can see the Dogs allowing him to go if the compensation pick is right, especially given the money they tied up with the likes of Darcy, Naughton, English and Weightman already. The caveat on that would be with Bont, Libba and Treloar all 30 or above at the end of 2025, if Richards carries on his improved form from last season they may want to hold on to him as probably their best midfield under 30.

I think so- if Geelong wanted to go down that path with him, and that's the position SDK wants play then I'd pass on him personally as I don't think he'll be much chop as a pure ruckman, nor do I think we need another ruck at present.

For mine the value in him is how good he can be as KPD. That 2022 season he was fantastic at FB for Geelong, people (including Bucks from memory I think?) were calling for him to be in the AA mix that season, and he was a massive reason the Cat's won the flag that year. IMO that's his best position and where I would be developing him, and if he's playing that position then I would be targeting him at the end of 2025.

The reason this doesn’t happen is because clubs and players are image-conscious and hash this stuff out behind the scenes so that no one looks silly.

The threat of matching is what forces the poaching club to have to pay up, though.

LDU in particular would be an interesting case though, because North could be in line for a bottom 4 pick via compo but only 2x late R1 picks from us in a trade…

Possibly - but my point was more around if that is what Sam wants to become, and he wants to be a ruckman like his brother.

Of course if it works out for us that he has a terrible 2025 trying to be a ruckman, and we get him on the cheap and restore him to be a gun KPD - but if he wants to develop and become a genuine ruck than I think it's a pass for me, let him try and chase that role/dream elsewhere.

He looks every bit a modern day ruckman to me. The full game he played against his brother, who was in the best form of his life, was outstanding. Has all the attributes of a super ruckman. He was being moved off the ball and didn't get to enough contests as a full back. Geelong desperately needs a good quality young ruckman, I reckon they'd be just as involved in his decision to be a ruck

So it’s most likely they’d match, but it doesn’t happen because of the aesthetics….

Collingwood and Essendon head the list of clubs in pursuit of Gold Coast star Matt Rowell, who also met with Geelong in spring.

Competition sources said that the Magpies and Bombers had spoken to Rowell back in October, along with Geelong, while the Western Bulldogs are also interested in the gun midfielder, who comes out of contract this year.

Gold Coast, however, are confident of retaining Rowell, the 2019 No.1 draft pick, despite the strong interest from Victoria and lure of returning home. Rowell, one of the AFL’s premier stoppage players, would be eligible for free agency at the end of 2027 if he signed a two-year extension.

The Suns are aware Rowell has been approached by Victorian clubs keen on a powerful inside midfielder, but they believe he has lately shown strong commitment to their cause.

He has played every match in the past three seasons and finished in the top 10 in the Brownlow Medal last year, but he is yet to play finals.

If he were up for grabs, Rowell would be one of the most sought-after players in the trading marketplace.

Premiership Cat Gryan Miers said his club should be applauded for its efforts to lure the midfield star.

The consistent Miers, who has played in 15 finals since making his AFL debut six seasons ago, said adding great players to the list via trades lifted everyone’s performance.

“He is one of the best players in the league so it is pretty straightforward ... that is what everyone gets cut up about, that we are targeting great players. That is their job to just target the best,” Miers said.

“I don’t know if we are going for him but if we are, good luck to him and good luck to us. If that happens it will be exciting. I hope we keep going after those big names.”

Miers, a keen NFL fan, said he only needed to look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ path to this year’s Super Bowl to know that trading in talent was the right approach. The Eagles had great success with players such as wide receiver A.J.Brown.

“You don’t want to sit on your heels and let others take the best players in the league. If you fail at getting these players, so be it,” Miers said.

“We have had great success with the players we have got. You’ve got to keep doing it and the only way to get better is to get better players.

“That makes the players like me at the team see those guys come and go [and think], ‘I don’t want them to steal my spot’. It all works for each other.”

If Rowell were to join the Cats, he would be an ideal replacement for Patrick Dangerfield, who is contracted until the end of 2026, and star midfielder Cam Guthrie, who has been sidelined through injury for all bar 10 matches since being equal best and fairest in Geelong’s 2022 premiership.
