I will say though that the Naicos dilemma is a reasonable take. It handcuffs us from a throw money at it perspective in the pursuit of King or Rowell if others are offering $1.5m at them unless it’s not about money or Nick himself plays a leading hand.
Not if we up Nick to 1.5m a year and old mate Butters can take the same. They'd collectively still be a million cheaper per year than NWM and TDK!

That’s potentially what we’ll need to do because even as an optimist I don’t see the other two options working. Once you do that though our culture of taking unders to keep the band together blows up…

It's not designed to be an equalisation measure. Only the compensation component is.
Sure, it was definitely argued for by the AFLPA as a benefit to the players.

But it’s been spruiked as good for equalisation.

The idea was crap teams have more money, so they’d be able to poach players from good teams who can’t pay them as much. It simply doesn’t work like that.

Did anyone mention Ford? I swear he had a bit of a following on here when he was drafted and if we lost Elliott I wouldn’t be a no.

He had couple meetings last season at the whatever centre we call it now.

The only team that I hear has maintained this culture successfully is Geelong, but they probably have the surf coast lifestyle proposition (plus whatever goes into the brown paper bags) that enables it. They also have been rumoured to have seasoned veterans willingly take under-par money so they can offer more for trade targets. I'm hearing Pendles, Howey etc. are doing the same for us so we should be able to stump up more for the bonafide superstars like Nick and Zac

Clubs renewing interest in Zach Merrett per Jay Clark.

I still believe he was the player Bucks talked about wanting to come to Collingwood 5 or 6 years ago…
Big fan of the guy, would love if he played for us.

Maybe he doesn’t make the same mistake as Crippa and waste his prime in a mediocre team, but like Crippa, I think Merrett has too much pride to leave

And Code Sports can reveal the Bombers met with superstar captain Zach Merrett a fortnight ago amid renewed interest from rivals.

Essendon senior figures met with Merrett to present a detailed plan about the club’s vision and list build after a poor season winning only six games.

St Kilda, Hawthorn and Collingwood have all been linked to Merrett who has not played in a winning final in 12 seasons and 251 matches.

Bombers’ senior figures explained to Merrett their plan to rise up the ladder after loading up on more young talent from this year’s draft to partner Nate Caddy, Archie Roberts and Isaac Kako.

But clubs have not completely ruled out making a last-minute play for Merrett, along with Melbourne’s Christian Petracca and Carlton’s Charlie Curnow.

Essendon has not entertained any prospect of trading Merrett and he has not asked the club for a move.

But rivals are closely monitoring his situation after a challenging season for the Bombers.

This is just second hand information but thought it was worth sharing.

A close mate of mine’s brother is really good mates with Langford. He’s seriously considering moving to North Melbourne. This has already been reported on that senior players are unhappy with the fitness stuff and the club at the moment.

The kicker? He let slip that Merrett met with Collingwood about a month ago. We probably can’t afford him and I don’t think he’ll leave, but it sounds like Essendon players are there for the taking.

Just quoting myself amid this latest news.
